Oppunder Råna, langt oppe i Regndalen

Quite rainy in Velledalen, Sykkylven, and wonderful reflections from of mountains in lake Fetvatnet.

Holetindane og Ystevasshornet er en del av samme fjellmassiv.

I bakgrunnen ser man elvene fra Drivdalen (nedenfor Råna) i midten og fra Regndalen til venstre.

Approx 650 m.a.s.l., viewpoint at approx 700 m.

Velledalen valley, with the main road going to Sykkylven to the left, to Stranda up the valley and then turning to the right. The valley is close to sea level, the road to stranda passes at about 550 m.

The central mountain in the background is Ystevasshornet (or Nibbetindane), to the left of the middle is Myrdalsfjellet (Or Slubba) with Kleivdalsfjellet and Roaldshorn behind. To the far right (partly covered in clouds) is Sætretinden (Or Dalmannshornet).

Regndalen is behind the black mountain wall on the right hand side.

Because the mountains are between the two villages, many of them have two names, depending on who you talk to.

Vellesetertindane (Skjortehornet) is one of the alpine mountains you can see from Velledalen. The range is called Sunnmørsalpane (Alps of the region Sunnmøre).

Sunnmørsalpane, Lyngsalpene in the north and Western Jotunheimen (Hurrungane) are the only alpine mountain ranges in Norway, the others are rates as glacial. Real alpine mountains are characterized by nunataks, peaks that reached above the ice, squeezed between glaciers.

The rotting leaf creates methane gas that gets trapped in the ice, like gaspockets. When you make a little hole in the pocket, and lights it, it burns. I use a match. (No manipulation)

(Fjellhugboka, 1996)

With it's 1586 meters Råna is the highest mountain in Sykkylven. The mountain got it's name because it looks like a square sail, seen from the sea. The englishman Geoffrey Hastings with crew, where the first to officially ascend the top in 1889. Only eight years later (30. july, 1897), E.C.Oppenheim and G.Arbuthnot, together with a chap from Sogn and Fjordane, Johannes Vigdal, climbed the sharp and dramatic north-east edge. This was seen as a great achievement.

Photo taken from near the top of the Brunstadhornet mountain.

The central feature is a mountain ridge ending with Straumshornet. The main valley Velledalen, crosses in the front and continues to the Fetvatnet lake to the left and the Sykkylvsfjorden fjord partly covered by the mountains. To the right is the beautiful Langenesvatnet lake and the dramatic ridge of the Hamarsettindane peaks.

The weather could have been more photo-friendly that day. But I had never been there before, don't think I will come back and assume that not many others have been there, so I cherish this one.
