The Mercedes-Benz W111 was a chassis code given to its top-range vehicles, including 4-door sedans, produced from 1959 to 1968, and 2-door coupes and cabriolets from 1961 to 1971.
Mercedes-Benz emerged from World War II as an automaker in the early 1950s with the expensive 300 Adenauers and the 300SL roadsters that gained it fame, but it was the simple unibody Pontons that were the volume models. However, in both their construction and design, the Pontons were archaic, based on 1940s models of U.S. sedans.
Work on replacing these cars began in 1956, and the design focused on passenger comfort and safety. The basic Ponton cabin was widened and squared off, with larger glass area improving driver visibility. A milestone in car design were front and rear crumple zones that would absorb kinetic energy from impact. The automaker also patented retractable seatbelts. (The death toll in the new generation cars would be less than half that of the pontons.)
The exterior was designed for the European and North American markets. The body was modern and featured a characteristic tailfins that gave gave the models their nickname — the fintail (German: Heckflosse).
Series production of the 4-door sedan began in August 1959, and the car was premiered at the Frankfurt Auto Show in autumn. Initially the series consisted of three models the 220b, 220Sb, and the 220SEb. These replaced the 219 W105, the 220S W180 and the 220SE W128 Ponton sedans respectively.
Design of a replacement for the two-door Pontons began in 1957, as most of the chassis and drivetrain were to be unified with the sedan, the scope was focused on the exterior styling. Some of the mock-ups and prototypes show that Mercedes-Benz attempted to give the two-door car a front styling almost identical to what would be realised in the Pagoda roadster, but ultimately favoured the work of engineer Paul Bracq. The rear bodywork however, persisted, and thus, though officially still called a fintail the rear end design had no chrome fin highlights. Production began in late 1960, and in February of the next year the coupe was premiered in Stuttgart for the 75th anniversary of the opening of Mercedes-Benz Museum.

Magirus GmbH is a truck manufacturer based in Ulm, Germany, founded by Conrad Dietrich Magirus (1824–1895). The company began manufacturing fire-fighting vehicles in 1866. In the late 1910s, it started the production of trucks and buses. These vehicles developed a reputation for high engineering standards, able to operate under the most arduous conditions.
The company also invented the turntable ladder, as Magirus Leiter, which quickly became an essential item of fire brigade equipment worldwide.
The parent company was Klöckner Humboldt Deutz AG, maker of the well-known Deutz engines, so the brand commonly used was Magirus Deutz, and for a short time Klöckner. The logo of Magirus Deutz was a stylised M with a sharp, long center point to represent the tower of the Ulm Cathedral.

Yep, I know these have been done in the brick before - notably by Mike and Tyler - but I was inspired by the new Dino stuff to have a go.
Whilst I love the new dinosaurs themselves, the vehicles in the 2012 sets leave me a little cold so I thought I'd have a crack at these.

The Light Infantry Grid Runner (LIGR) is my own take on a future fighting vehicle, in the style of the JLTV. I felt that my Iron Mountain Legion theme needed a small scout vehicle, akin to a Jeep or Humvee. Arguably, the name is a bit of a reach, but once I'd decided to put "Light Infantry" in the name, I couldn't help but try to name it Liger. While this is a post-apocalyptic theme, every apocalypse has a before-time, and these were clearly designed to run on or across a highway grid girding what would become the wasteland. Yeah, that's the ticket, it's a Grid Runner.
I thought that it was important to make it capable, and fun to play with, so I started by building a chasis with suspension. From there, I tried to add the usual visual style of the theme, so the model is a little tall and oversized, and, obviously, dark gray. In further pursuit of playability, I added working doors and tail hatches, and a nest on the roof.
This was first version of the vehicle that I built. It feels more utilitarian than the other. I like the armored panels on the side, but the square back isn't as dynamic.
Hong Kong Government Department | All Departments
All Cars and Misc. Hong Kong Government Vehicles
All Hong Kong Government operated vehicles have a licence plate that starts AM (there are a few exceptions, see below) and have a number sequence comprising 1 to 4 numbers. A high end car generally denotes it is the chauffeur driven vehicle of a high ranking Hong Kong Government Minister and a few really Senior Ministers have cars with 2 letter number plates ( CS, FS, CJ and SJ) | Status is important even in the Government as is the use of lucky numbers (1, 2, 3, 6, 8, 9, 0 etc) on licence plates.
The Chief Executive of Hong Kong has the Hong Kong Emblem ( large badge ) on the front and back of the vehicle but remarkably (for me anyway) the best Government licence plate is the number I on the official car of the Commissioner of Police, top that as they say!
The exceptions : - the Emergency Service Vehicles ( Fire Trucks and Ambulances ) use F with digits and A with digits
☛ The Hong Kong Government has many departments that use vehicles, see the Hong Kong Government Department list below my research indicates that the Government currently has in excess of 6,500 ✚ licenced vehicles on the road.
☛ Go here for an Alphabetical Listing of Hong Kong Government and Related Organisations | Departments
www.gov.hk/en/about/govdirectory/govwebsite/alphabetical....
The most common Government Misc. Vehicles ( excluding cars ) ie Trucks, Vans and Buses you see on the streets are used by such departments as Hongkong Post, Customs and Excise Department, Water Services Department, Food and Environmental Hygiene Department, Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department, Leisure and Cultural Services Department, Government Logistics Department and such.
It is also common to see private contractor vehicles working for Government Departments
All purchasing of Government Vehicles is a tender process and as vehicles can last a good few years and as new vehicles are purchased on a regular basis, it is a real mish mash of brands, I do get the impression that low price is not the deciding factor, I imagine equipment and after sales service are major factors and quality European and Japanese brands are very common.

Now that the force is sadly riding off into the sunset (it becomes the Highlands & Islands Area of the Police Service of Scotland on 1st April 2013) I have been wallowing in nostalgia. Looking back over my photos, here's a few I had not previously uploaded. These vehicles will have all long gone to the great Auction Mart.

Dampf-Kraft Wagen (German: steam-powered vehicle) or DKW is a historic car and motorcycle marque. In 1916, the Danish engineer Jørgen Skafte Rasmussen founded a factory in Saxony, Germany, to produce steam fittings. In the same year, he attempted to produce a steam-driven car, called the DKW. Although unsuccessful, he made a two-stroke toy engine in 1919, called Des Knaben Wunsch — "a boy's desire". He also put a slightly modified version of this engine into a motorcycle and called it Das Kleine Wunder — "a little marvel". This was the real beginning of the DKW brand: by the 1930s, DKW was the world's largest motorcycle manufacturer. In 1932, DKW merged with Audi, Horch and Wanderer to form the Auto Union, and all brands continued until World War II. After the war, Auto Union changed ownership a couple of times, first passed into the hands of Daimler-Benz in 1957, and was finally purchased by the Volkswagen Group in 1964.
From 1949 to 1962, DKW produced a van with a trailing-arm rear suspension system which incorporated springs in the cross bar assembly. It had a very modern layout with a front engine and front-wheel drive, but the engine was terribly weak. First the van used the prewar engine of the F8 with two cylinders, 700 cc and 20 hp (22 hp after 1952). This was definitely not enough when the van was fully charged. Things went (a little) better in 1955 when the van received the three cylinder unit with 900 cc, producing 32 hp. The van was also produced in Vitoria, Spain. DKW (pronounced "de-ca-uve") become a common term for any van, and is still used today.
This one is dated from 1960. I knew these vans being a child, and they always fell to me likeable: they were always smiling.
