This is a current state snapshot of some icons I've been trying to churn out for the X-Keys keypad for controlling my mini mill. The hotkeys I've mapped, and where I've mapped them can be found in the previous screencap.
I think the Increase/Decrease Jog Speed buttons will be some form of the usual rabbit/turtle dichotomy, stretching my skillz to their absolute limit :) The X, Y, Z, and A are actual letters, so I can't fuss much with their presentation. I'd like them to be thicker, though, and I will likely go back and make them bold. It might be nice to have the E-STOP letters be hollow, with a thick black outline, and a red fill, but I only have a black laser printer. Maybe I can just paint them in with a red Sharpie. These are just printout keycap button legends, after all.
I haven't decided on the directional/clockness buttons look yet, either. They don't match above, because I'm testing ideas, though I kind of like the yin-yang effect of each being the others inverse. The buttons do double duty, because with my configuration, I must select a current axis with X, Y, Z, or A, and then increment/decrement with - and + (actually with - and =, because EMC2 doesn't recognize the actual plus (i.e. shift+=)).
I must also decide what graphic I want to represent "program," for the "Reload Program," "Run Program," and "Stop Program" buttons. At first I was thinking things like a play triangle, recycle loop, and stop sign around a "C:\>," but then realized how very Windows that is, and I'm not even using Windows at home now, so forget that. Then I thought of something like those ideas, but with #/bin/sh, but I think I just want to get rid of the whole idea of text. Maybe a little computer logo with those things on its screen, or surrounding it would work.
As for continuous, and incremental jog, I just don't know. I considered a jogger in profile leaving a solid, or dotted line, but that seems a lot to convey in a small square, and probably not very obvious anyway. I also thought of something like a bee's flight path shown solid, or dashed. Again, kinda weak.
The core concept for all of these buttons is not to make flashy Mac/Vista icons with glass, and smooth gradients, but to make something very simple, very high contrast, and very readable at a glance, like warning signs. You don't want to mistake a button, or press the wrong one when working with machines with motors, and sharp, spinning bits.

that's how the holidays should feel,
although i'm not in that mode yet,
at least I have expressed it in vectors and swirls,
hoping it will indeed by that way as the year ends.
