At the end of our ascent, we reached the viewpoint over the Apurimac Valley and stopped for a while to eat and enjoy the view.

While we were resting, a Variable Hawk flew by and stayed almost stationary in the air above us for quite a while.

Snapped while looking for its rarer Irish relative. See the note marking the diagnostic "wine glass" mark - on Azure this would not have the stem.

Variable Cracker (Hamadryas feronia). Photographed at the Floresta Amazônica Hotel in Alta Floresta, Mato Grosso, Brazil.

Here's a sign designed for an extremely small market. Who knew temp and other factores might impact the energy content in gasoline?

Fabricated from A-36 carbon steel, these PTP-4 A-Type variable spring supports measure 6 5/8" OD x 19 9/16" in length with an installed load of 596 lb. They have a spring rate of 56 lb/in., and a downward travel of 1.375". These supports are designed to suspend from a rod that is threaded through the upper portion of the variable (see Fig. PTP-4). This particular design is generally used to keep the variable further away from the beam to avoid interference.

These variable springs are custom designed from carbon steel material. The springs are fabricated with extra long housings to allow for a pre-compression lower than the standard. This ensured that the starting (cold) load of 26,745 lb. could be achieved. The springs are designed for a movement of 5.55" downward, which would produce an operating load for each assembly of 38,305 lb. These springs are to be utilized in pairs together with a 22" riser clamp to produce a 407" total assembly length and an overall combined operating load of 76,610 lb.

A wader bird local to New zealand

Saw this raptor near Maras in the Chincero district. Couldn't get close so this is a poor quality shot at extreme range. To be honest, I am not 100% confident it is a Variable Hawk (scientific name: Geranoaetus polyosoma) - it could be another hawk such as a White-throated Hawk (Buteo albigula). any thoughts on the identification very welcome!

I decided to try out my variable neutral density filter (NDX) for this shot, on top of my circular polarizer, which pushed an otherwise mundane shot to 13 seconds long. I dialed the NDX too dark, and it looked like crap in camera, so I just removed the filter and went on with my shoot.

I almost deleted this shot right then and there, and then again when I imported my photos into Lightroom, but I thought I'd process it and see what happened.

So glad I did.

I'd dial in way less on the NDX next time, and maybe just settle with a straight ND filter, but I do need to experiment more with ND filters to move my long exposures into the day time.

Taken on Fisherman's Wharf, looking back at my condo on the other side of Victoria's Inner Harbour.

13 second long exposure at f/13, ISO 200 on my Nikon D600 and 50mm f/1.4D lens.
