Huron & Eastern C30-7 #5086 sits face-to-face with one of its replacements, Knoxville & Holston River GP40-2LW #9580. While RailAmerica had brought in a pair of ex UP SD40M-2s to replace the remnants of the Central Michigan's eclectic fleet of GEs, the Dash 7s were still seeing some use right into the very beginning of the G&W era in late 2012. The Orange Borg finally decided to put an end to these GE shenanigans and brought in a pair of former CN wide-nose GP40s from the KXHR and Wiregrass Central. Unfortunately for the Dash 7s, all would be cut up within a few months.
If the green on #5086's cab looks fresher than the rest of the BN green, that's because it is. During the Central Michigan era, the cab was entirely black. When the locomotive was re-lettered for HESR in 2004, the Bay City shop crews actually repainted the green and black stripe on the cab of the old Dash 7.
A Military Orchid / Orchis militaris in a spring meadow …
‘Twixt hill and plain there was a winding path
Which led us to the margin of the dell,
Where dies the border more than half way
Gold and fine silver, and scarlet and pearl white,
The Indian wood resplendent and serene,
Fresh emerald the moment it is broken,
By herbage and by flowers within that hollow
Planted, each one in colour would be vanquished,
As by its greater vanquished is the less.
(Dante Alighieri)
