The farmer I'm working with finally got his grant (he was supposed to hear in May) so this week I started cranking out test batches while there's still produce available. Each recipe needs to be made 2x and sent to the lab for testing and then the recipes need to be resized and rewritten by weights with critical points noted (i.e.-temp. at which the jars are filled, etc.) and once they are approved, we are good to go next season. He wants to add value added products to his CSA boxes.

Charcoal sac being transported to the market, Yangambi, DRC. In order to have a good charcoal that people would buy the wood must be hard. Each oven produces from 10 to 15 big sacs of charcoal that are sold at 4usd in the local market and 11usd in Kisangani. Two weeks are required to cut and gather the wood and the time needed to burn it is around 10 days. Transportation costs are very high so profit is normally low.

Until the 2008 crisis hit, furniture carving and sanding were ideal jobs for housewives and house-bound mothers in Jepara. With this work, they could take care of household chores and make money on the side.
