Downing Street protesters demand "End the Tampon Tax" - London 02.04.2015
Protesters outside Downing Street adorned with fake tampons and bloodied underwear called for an end to what they say is a "skewed" VAT system which sees 5% paid on tampons which are classed as 'luxury items', yet gambling, houseboat mooring and military aircraft sales are exempted. This week the Salvation Army has reported that in many deprived areas up and down the UK increasing numbers of women can no longer afford to buy sanitary towels, and are having to resort to shockingly primitive and dangerous solutions such as newpaper, old socks or hankies, which makes the women prone to urinary tract infections. In response to this public health issue the Salvation Army has started providing tampons to women unable to afford them, including, of course, homeless women living on the streets.

Protesters outside Downing Street adorned with fake tampons and bloodied underwear called for an end to what they say is a "skewed" VAT system which sees 5% paid on tampons which are classed as 'luxury items', yet gambling, houseboat mooring and military aircraft sales are exempted. This week the Salvation Army has reported that in many deprived areas up and down the UK increasing numbers of women can no longer afford to buy sanitary towels, and are having to resort to shockingly primitive and dangerous solutions such as newpaper, old socks or hankies, which makes the women prone to urinary tract infections. In response to this public health issue the Salvation Army has started providing tampons to women unable to afford them, including, of course, homeless women living on the streets.

George Osborne last night scrapped his hated Pasty Tax, saying that he had “listened to Sun readers”.
In a dramatic U-turn, the Chancellor caved in on his Budget plan to impose VAT on hot baked snacks like pasties, pies and sausage rolls. His climbdown is a spectacular victory for The Sun’s “Who VAT all the pies?” campaign.

A rather precient sign? The VAT reduction has now gone, of course, but will the Best Before date prove telling?
Fullers, Wetherspoon, Heineken and lots of pub and resaurant chains are backing a French restauranteur's campaign to reduce VAT on the food they serve. Food from a supermarket is non-VAT, food in pubs etc is 20% VAT rated. There's several strands to this campaign - one is that this allows supermarkets to cut prices on alcohol so they can always undercut pubs. Meaning job losses and lack of choice.
On Wednesday 25 September there will be a number of companies reducing their prices as a demonstration. This photo is at the Mitre, 291 Greenwich High Road, SE10 8NA. Weatherspoon, and many others have similar plans.

This photograph was taken in June 2000 prior to the introduction of the Goods and Services Tax in Australia. The image is of the shop window display of Hellraiser Tackle & Electronics, 719-721 New Canterbury Road, Dulwich Hill, New South Wales (NSW).
The image depicts the Prime Minister of the time, John Howard, saying "Don't Be a FLATHEAD like me ... Shop at HELLRAISER and beat the G.S.T. !" while riding a Marlin.
