Night view from the summit of Mount Rocciamelone (3.538 m) toward the Punta Lunella (2.772 m), a mountain in the Graian Alps (Italy) whose summit here emerges from an infinite bank of thick clouds.
We can therefore approximate the altitude of the cloudscape around 2.600 meters, or so...
which means about nine hundred meters below me.
More in the distance are visible the lights of Turin (one of the largest cities in northern Italy) that lit up from beneath the mass of clouds.
Then the universe, with planet Jupiter clearly visible on the left.
One of those visions I would say out of this world.
I could not even conceive photography if released from the search of the amazing simplicity that lies in the infinite.
Where planet Earth and all our momentary certainties must give way to the immensity of the unknown universe. The bridge to the absolute, the gateway of awe.

Observed at night by a mountain hut, here are some interesting cloud formations above the town of Susa (Italy). In the distance the lights of the Susa Valley and the first suburbs of Turin.

A glimpse of the woods, a bit mysterious, thanks to the dense vegetation and the soft light of late afternoon.

View from the summit of Mount Rocciamelone (3.538 meters / 11,603 feet), Susa Valley, Italy, looking towards Mount Chaberton.
Rather than the classic carpet of clouds here it's possible to see the haze of the evening caressed by the slanting rays of the imminent sunset.

Shot taken at sunrise from the summit of Mount Rocciamelone (3.538 meters / 11,603 feet), Susa Valley, Italy.
While the clouds are covering the entire plain up to the eye can see, in the distance the summit area of Monte Viso (3.841 m) emerges from this lovely, soft and colorful, ocean of clouds.

Autumn is not only a colorful season. It is also a season of sleep and death.
The purpose of this simple shot was to render that subtle sense of sadness, mixed with torpor, that well characterizes this season. Thanks to the pale colors of a day fading away and the branches almost yearning to the moon.

The pleasant atmosphere, intangible almost otherworldly, of one afternoon of thick fog in the woods.

Mist, reddish leaves on the ground... the torpor of the woods... a prelude to autumn approaching.

quando la natura si placa e tace c'è il silenzio intorno a te e guardi ..ammiri ..attonito
Photo bearing the very same title of an earlier shot of mine taken in October 2010, because it is portraying, in essence, a very similar scene: the shadow of Mount Rocciamelone (3.538 m), Italy, covering at sunset the Viù Valley below. Look to the blue cone visible on the top left of the image.
Hence the title of course, since it seems to see a mountain on the left, but in reality it is just a shadow, so "The Mountain Who Wasn't There".
Here you can see the shot taken in 2010 www.flickr.com/photos/13980928@N03/5120485878/in/photolis...
Comparing the two shots I have to say that perhaps the light captured in 2010 was better, I guess due to the fact that being the shadow slightly to the left it allowed the chain of mountains below to shine a bit more in the sunset.
Nevertheless the photo I am posting now is technically more perfect having been realized with tripod and with a photographic equipment qualitatively far superior. The lakes below, even the river, are more visible. The differences between colors are much better defined as the shades in between, a very important aspect when dealing with such a complex situation of colors and light like this one.
So I say, I will keep both photos... each one tells me something. Certainly the affection I have for the shoot of 2010 remains unchanged, because that moment was the first time I saw this wonderful shadow, so that picture, in itself, even if taken on the fly, for me contains the charm of the "act of discovery".
Instead, the picture of today represents the need to continue to live and document certain emotions, knowing that even if similar will never be the same, maybe it's a homecoming, to what I already know, that made me fall in love.

The higher you climb, the further you see.
He who sees further, dreams longer.
Plus vous montez, plus vous voyez loin.
Celui qui voit plus loin, rêve plus longtemps.
Chi più alto sale, più lontano vede.
Chi più lontano vede, più a lungo sogna.

It’s evening, an almost epic-apocalyptic atmosphere envelops the mountains in front of me... The view from the Sbaron peak (2,223 m), in the Susa Valley, Italy, remains unchanged, the one admired in many other excursions of mine in that area: punta Croce Rossa ( 3,566 m), punta d'Arnas (3560 m), Uia di Bessanese (3,592 m), have always been there, but never have they spoken to me in such an intense and poetic way!
But that evening, during a stormy sunset, the magic of various atmospheric elements combined each other happened: bad weather at a distance, fogs, clouds, glimpses of light, generated an unforgettable ambience.
It is true that the subject chosen in a photo and a correct composition have their importance, but what I have found over the years is that the atmosphere that surrounds the whole is often even more relevant.
Technical issues aside, photographing means looking for the… intangible!

I've just reprocessed this photo from a few years ago, which is perhaps the shot that I keep most in my heart, so I really wanted to be sure to make the most of the wonder I saw that night.
A sea of clouds, exposed to the south-east, is lit by the moon (63%) rising in the east.
Yes, a huge mass of clouds slipping down steep rocky ridges from a height of about 2.900 meters.
Shot taken at night on September 6th 2012, from the summit of Mount Rocciamelone (3.538 m), Italy.
This is one of the most otherworldly photograph I've taken, thanks to the intrinsic magic of the night and to the privilege of being there, silently admiring this amazing moment.
This 195 seconds exposure, at 115mm on full frame, turned the slow passage of the clouds in a sort of "silky waterfall".
A few star trails are already visible, despite the exposure wasn't particularly long. I guess we all know as the consequences of Earth's rotation are more obvious when using a telephoto lens.
Intensity of colors, contrast and white balance are strongly faithful to the scene.
Main mountains here visible are the Uia Ciamarella (3.676), P.ta d'Arnas (3.560) and, at the horizon, the south-west face of Gran Paradiso (4.061), companion of many adventures :-)

A temporary opening of the carpet of clouds, above the city of Turin, allowed this magical vision. Thanks to the light pollution a sort of "light crater" appeared in the distance.
