If anyone knows what "trapunto" embroidery is, I've hit upon the latex-plus air analog. This technique would be useful for creating texture on stretched latex forms for plaster. You betcha. It will also work to evacuate the space between membranes, too.

Getting more ginormous by the day. Next up, making the barrel and other attachments for the front end.
This is a stool I've been working on the last few weeks. My goal is to assemble a stool together using thermoforming, and through this, eliminate the need for fasteners. By using what would normally be considered "consequences" of vacuum-forming, the undercuts and trapping of wood add to it's structure.

Local inventor John Colborn has been frequenting the Jocelyn H. Lee Innovation Lab while developing a portable, rechargeable diving system that provides air to divers "on demand" from an air pump at the water's surface - similar to a #SNUBA or hookah system, but much smaller and more portable. John is now shepherding his invention through the patent process, and the basic skills and tools used to create the device were introduced to him here in the Innovation Lab: 3D printing, laser cutting, vacuum forming, Arduino microcontrollers and more.
John recently tested his system and was able to stay underwater for a continuous 2 hours on a single battery charge - plenty of time to clean his backyard pool a few times and then some.

Buy me that 1999 Escalade. I will sit and fan myself on this bench.

Dome sculpt and vac forming setup for the Protomorph (Xenomorph) from Alien: Covenant - 1:18 scale.
Using a test cast from earlier today, I used Aves FIXIT sculpt and built up the dome for the beast. Sculpted the dome, allowed the FIXIT to sure and reduced the dome all over so I can achieve the correct proportional build of the clear PETG dome the original sculpt represented.
Smoothed and polished the sculpt of the dome, reduced the details below it and built up base to stabilize the piece for vac forming. I'll now be able to use this piece over and over again to create the clear domes....although I may need to make adjustments once some test domes are made...tomorrow. #alien #aliens #covenant #sculpture #dome #vacuumforming #PETG #avesstudio #FIXITsculpt #protomorph #xenomorph

This is the 4th pull on a new thermoformer. Knowing that that undercuts and voids would propose a problem, the test was used to gauge the heating elements and the vacuum in relation to a specific material cross-section, against a rather activated form.

Finished plastic sheet that has been formed over my mold. There was some bubbling but I will see how it looks after I tint it.

My mold that the plastic is formed over, it's placed on a board with a shop vace to suck the air out.

Using our DIY vacuum-forming rig, participants were able to make custom mold shapes using thermo-formed plastic.
Generations of Findlay-area residents nostalgiacally remember the shop's radio jingle:
♫ Ar-ma-tures for *all* your needs
At Fin-lay Ar-ma-ture ♫
I think the thing mounted in the doorway is: an armature.
"Finlay" is a misspelling of "Findlay."
