Avro Vulcan XM655 is one of three remaining taxiable Avro Vulcan strategic bombers, the other two being XH558 and XL426. XM655 is owned by Wellesbourne Mountford Airfield and has been maintained by the 655 Maintenance & Preservation Society since 1998.

XM655 was completed on 19 November 1964. It is the youngest surviving example and the only operable Avro Vulcan with the more powerful Bristol Olympus 301 engines. Commissioned at RAF Cottesmore in 1964, XM655 initially flew with Nos. 9, 12 and 35 Squadrons before moving to the Waddington Wing in 1967 to join Nos. 44, 50 and 101 Squadrons.

XM655 has appeared in several video documentaries about the Vulcan, Falklands operations and the Royal Air Force. Usually it has been used as a stand-in for the activities that cannot be filmed at the sites or on the aircraft featured.

The impossibly lovely Andy as the Roman god, Vulcan.

Vulcan came to be considered as the manufacturer of art, arms, iron, jewellery and armor for various gods and heroes, including the thunderbolts of Jupiter. He was the son of Jupiter and Juno, and husband of Maia and Venus. His smithy was believed to be situated underneath Mount Etna in Sicily.

Mr A V Roe, did makes exceptionally good bombers.

One of the saddest days of my life.

Took some snaps at the Southport air show recently. We missed out on the Euro fighter this year due to them all being busy, but the old classics still made an appearance.

Very noisy and intimidating, the Vulcan bomber, who carried nuclear weapons with names like Blue Danube gravity bomb, Yellow Sun, Green grass and Violet Club.

The fleet of Vulcan bombers were flown by the RAF between 1953 and 1984, part of the UK's nuclear strike force, also capable of delivering conventional weaponry, taking part in the Falklands conflict in 1982.

Here the last flying Vulcan catches the light while soaring above Southport.

Thanks for viewing.

I made another diptych, that's two this year. Aren't I doing well?

It doesn't get much better than this!

Standing on Beachy Head, way above the Eastbourne seafront airshow gives an incredible vantage point looking down over the English Channel when into view comes Avro Vulcan XH558 - the last flying Vulcan anywhere in the universe!

She held off for 10 minutes ......patiently awaiting her turn to thrill the crowds....and me!

In Network South East livery No 50033 "Glorious" leads classmate No 50007 "Sir Edward Elgar" in GW green livery pass their birthplace Vulcan Works, Earlestown on Pathfinders "The Merseyman" Railtour, (1Z44) 06.35hrs Bristol Temple Meads to North West and return. Both loco's were built at the works in 1968 and the tour took in Eccles Loop, Halton Junction, Folly Lane and Liverpool Docks. Very sadly all traces of the Vulcan buildings were demolished to make way for housing. Just cannot help thinking why the Vulcan tower was not preserved to acknowledge its locomotive history and put the area on the map so to speak! 30th October 1993.

Taken during one of her farewell air displays at the Heritage Motor Centre in Kineton, Warwickshire. Tickets had sold out so quickly that we were unable to get into the actual show, but we managed to park on a verge of a road which ran at right angles to the end of the old airstrip, so we got a good view from there.
