The Nortel BCM (Enterprise Edge) actually had a functional Norstar phone system on a PCI card.
I've been playing about with VOIP recently in a bid to learn more about it. I decided setting up Asterisk at home would be a good idea and after having used Cisco handsets at work, thought a 7960G would be a nice addition to my home office.
The end result was a quick bit of eBaying and 57quid later I had a brand new 7960 sat on my desk, connected to Asterisk and working like a charm, wicked.
I put a page on my Wiki about how to configure it: http://wiki.siftah.com/Cisco_7960G_IP_Phone_on_Asterisk and there's a video of it in action on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CwuRV9MbSpo

f you are using a VoIP phone system, there is a good chance you have experienced poor call quality. This article discusses the causes of VoIP call quality problems and what you can do to correct them.
The causes of poor quality VoIP calls are easy to diagnose and correct. Your VoIP Service Provider should be able to identify and work with you to correct these problems. More importantly, these problems should not be ongoing. If your VoIP Service Provider is unable to correct your call quality problems, you need to find a different provider.
The Solution: Prioritize
Prioritizing VoIP traffic over the network yields latency and jitter improvements. Policy based network management, bandwidth reservation, Type of Service, Class of Service, and Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) are all widely used techniques for prioritizing VoIP traffic. A quality VoIP router can solve many of these issues and will result in business quality VoIP service
3. The Problem: Poor Internet Connection
Most ISP’s are designed for web surfing and not VoIP. Transporting voice packets is different and requires an additional set of internet protocols that your ISP may not be providing.
I flashed the VOIP version of dd-wrt v23 sp1 which provide SIP at Home web interface for the SIP Express Router running on DD-WRT Embedded Linux. This can make my wireless route become a VOIP route.

38% increase in business customer base for Ireland’s leading Cloud Telephony provider
20% increase in business-driven revenue during 2012
Blueface, Ireland’s leading cloud telephony company, recorded its most successful year in business to date in 2012, with an impressive increase in its business customer base and continuous growth in the volume calls made from Blueface landlines and mobiles.
Over the past two years Blueface has performed strongly in growing its SME and corporate customer base, with 94% of its revenue now in B2B communications and 20% year on year growth from 2011. To meet this growing business demand Blueface has furthered its commitment to R&D and is working closely with technical partners such as Panasonic to deploy a best in class, innovative service.
Highlights for this dynamic company in 2012 included:
· The launch of Blueface Mobile, Ireland's first dedicated business mobile service, which now accounts for a growing portion of Blueface's revenue and a significantly value-added business telecoms offering;
· A strategic partnership with Carphone Warehouse, whereby Blueface Services for SMEs can now be purchased at Carphone Warehouse stores nationwide;
· Expansion to the Italian market through acquisition of leading Italian Cloud Telephony provider ‘Kebu’;
· A major Research & Development Initiative supported by Enterprise Ireland which saw significant enhancement of Blueface’s proprietary IP Platform.
· Enlargement of the company’s workforce with the creation of Sales, Customer Service, Technical and Engineering jobs at its headquarters in the IFSC, Dublin.
· Continued development of Blueface’s relationship with global electronics giant Panasonic, including an exciting distribution arrangement for the high-tech Panasonic UT range of business-friendly hardware in Ireland.
· The inaugural ‘Blueface Elevator’ competition in which start-ups and entrepreneurs from around the country were invited to pitch their businesses to a panel of experts for a chance to win €60,000 worth of business services to help them get off the ground.
· Additional CSR activities included a key sponsorship role in the Blue September ‘Big C’ Cycle, and on-going work with not-for-profit organisations such as Social Entrepreneurs Ireland, ‘Movember’ and ‘Women for Election.’
The company expanded its business customer base by 38% during 2012 with a number of notable customer wins for its innovative ‘Hosted PBX’ offering. Well-known brands joining Blueface during 2012 included leading Apple retailer Compu B; hospitality chain FX Buckley; mobile payments pioneer Sum-Up; a number of sign-ups in the educational sector including the Digital Marketing Institute and Mount Temple School; and several key wins such as Belfius Bank and Canada Life in the Financial Services sector where an emphasis on reliability and high performance continues to attract clients looking for advanced communications features with low capital investment.
CEO of Blueface, Alan Foy said, “Despite the tough economic climate, many of our business customers are thriving by finding more innovative and cost-effective ways of doing business. We have found that customers are increasingly eager to avail of new low-cost converged offerings and hosted voice services delivered on the company's existing IP network.”
“Blueface strives to support Irish business by supplying high-quality, low cost services,” he continued, ““We have a number of new and exciting products coming online in 2013, and we are also continuing to expand throughout Europe.”

Finally! With the final piece of the puzzle provided to me by Cisco TAC, I've got a Nokia E-Series phone connecting directly to Cisco CallManager Express on our 2811 ISR (running IOS 12.4(9)T1). This is using SIP, not the (still coming?) software from Cisco/Nokia that makes the phone talk SCCP instead.
ie. (for friends who read all this and said "huh?") with one of these phones, you can have it connect via wi-fi to your office's phone system and make/receive normal local calls via the office phone lines rather than paying mobile rates. or that's the idea, anyway.
what doesn't (apparently) work so well is connecting to other SIP providers on the internet, since Nokia haven't implemented NAT traversal for getting through firewalls yet. You might be able to do it, though, depending on where you are.
More info (including IOS config) here.
If you're not interested in CallManager Express, you might want to make it work with Asterisk, which I've also done.
