A.W. Cardinal was for most of the performance hidden in the dark. He gave the limelight to his partner Jass. Even his name A.W. is a bit of mystery. Southside Shuffle blues festival reserved the best for the last; at least it was for me the 'Blue Moon Marquee'. Normally it's a duo Jasmine Colette and A.W. Cardinal, but they added an excellent keyboard player. Both write songs, both have great voices and are excellent musicians. Rather then being just another blues band their music had depth and originality. The Albertans travel the world now for several years. Cardinal raspy voice is very distinctive. Playing together for 10 years, there is nothing stale in their performance. Alexander Wesley and Jasmine are now on my radar.

Alex is an actor, singer, composer and photographer, who brings you new tunes wrapped in old time feeling. He sounds like Sinatra; his mannerism is also from the 1950s-60s. I have seen him treating his numerous fans, who range from twentysomething to seventysomething, with kindness and respect. The vocalist was nominated for 2022 Juno Award. (Canadian Grammy). His band the 'Jazz Mavericks' include Jacob Gorzhaltsan-sax, Ewen Farncombe-piano, Daniel Botos-drums and Ben Dwyer on bass. At 'Tapestry' on the day it opened under new ownership.

"Frankie Foo and the YoYo Smugglers" is a fun Ska band, who plays once or twice a month in the city. The 8, 9 or 10 member band plays love songs and dance song with weird titles like: "Don't Roll Those Bloodshot Eyes at Me", "Monster Mash", "Mighty Ruler", "Duck Soup". The band is super entertaining and has an almost a cult following. Sax player Toby Hughes leads the band for the last 22 years. Here Wham Gritty on steeldrum and Trumpet Roy are part of a band which also includes Thumbs, Skip, Shaggy, Gonzo and other characters. The personnel may be slightly different every time they get together, but it is always fun and the spirit is more contagious than Omicron latest variant. By the 2nd or latest 3rd set, everyone is on dance floor.

Alfie Smith is a singer, prolific songwriter, an accomplished performer and talented multi-instrumentalist. He was on the stage at least at 4 performances at the recent 'Winterfolk Festival' in Toronto. He is more into folk and blues, so since I prefer jazz, I do not get to see him often.
'Winterfolk Festival' featured some 80 shows on one weekend and for $30 all inclusive pass you get introduced to some interesting music. OK, food and drink is not included. He performed with a living legend of Canada's folk scene David Essig and Kevin Breit, one of the most versatile jazz and blues guitarist in the city.

Rachel is a regular on weekends at 'Home of the Blues' Grossman's Tavern. She would sing a song or two, as a guest to New Orleans style band. Usually a bluesy tune, not particularly happy, but heartfelt. Her favourite is "Judge Send Me to the 'Lectric Chair." When not singing, she would be socializing, laugh and dance like there is no care in the world. Rabi Rachel is also in charge to light the Chanukah candles when Christmas spirit becomes too sugary to deal with.
Mike Evin is frequent piano player and vocalist with the weekend bands.

I warned him 'bout before.
I had my knife and went insane.
The rest you ought to know....." ♫

Garnetta Cromwell led her troops to a great party at Taco Taco and perfect finish of the Winterfolk festival. Aretha, ah sorry Garnetta, has the energy of 10, and she with her competent band made the audience dance. Garnetta Cromwell took an interesting path to music; from being an officer in the Canadian Army, to being Canadian weightlifting champion and record holder. Recently this group represented Canadian blues at the finals in the International Blues Challenge in Memphis. Taco Taco is a relatively new music venue in Toronto with a large room for concerts in the back. Mexican themed food is obviously the choice there.

I had the pleasure of working with Linda last night at, Maxan Jazz and Sushi, here in Las Vegas. I also wanted to try my Canon 5D Classic with the Canon 70-200mm f2.8L IS USM out in a jazz nightclub situation. It was a win-win situation!
"Cadillac" John Nolden was born April 12, 1927, in Renova, Mississippi. He is a blues harmonica player, songwriter and vocalist. Shown at the Juke Joint Festival in Clarksdale, Mississippi.

Searching for the source of loud melodies from treetops in Melbourne, I found this bird.
From far north Thunder Bay, but part of Toronto blues since forever. He is a multiple Maple Blues Award winner and JUNO, longstanding association with the Downchild Blues Band 1979-2025! Gary Kendall is a Canadian bassist, vocalist and band leader, best known for being big part of Hogtown All Stars, The Mighty Duck Blues Band, and The Swingin’ Blackjackand. Gary Kendall Trio. I have seen Kendall not only with local bands, but also with many musicians visiting Toronto from abroad, they probably asked for him. On this photo he was part of trio with Tyler Burgess -drums and a guitar player at Union Summer music series.

A Yellow-throated Vireo singing his little heart out. My first time to photograph one of these Llittle beauties. It has been a season of firsts!
Yellow-throated Vireos are early spring migrants that travel from their wintering grounds in Central and South America.
Guitarist Libor Smoldas, played with pianist and vocalist Jakub Zomer, one of the best known jazz musicians in Prague in a large church (1931) in Smichov. They played for swing dancers. I've seen Libor in Toronto several years ago. Together we figured out, it was 10 years ago. He came then for mini concert tour; two of the 4 venues are no longer available for concerts. I had seen Jakub Zomer first time in Little Glenn Club. The acoustics in the church were pretty good, but the lighting was atrocious, so I only upload one photo, which I had to manipulate to get something visually palatable. I did not find out the name of the sax player, maybe, I still will.

Libor Šmoldas - guitar

Cheryl Lescom is a proof that music keeps you young. (OK, Keith Richard exempted). Born in 1953, she has a great voice and stage presence. I seen her twice this year, and at both concert she gave her all. I was attending a fundraiser for 'Red Door Family shelter' in November and was happy to see that the vocalist was one of the musicians featured. I hope to hear her again soon, as she does not play in Toronto very often. She was supported by the 'Social House' Band: Margaret Stowe- guitar, voice, Roberta Hunt on keys, voice, Rebecca Hennessy - trumpet, voice, Russ Bosswell on bass, Jamie Stager - trombone and Michelle Josef - drums.

I remember Janice from about 20 years ago Friday's nights at Palais Royale. She was a diminutive girl in her early 20's with surprisingly strong, smoky, sultry voice. I did not see her since the 100 year old 'Palais Royale' relatively minor fire (early 2000), and the building was closed for 6 years. Janice Hagan sings now mostly in the Reservoir Lounge and at corporate events. Her vocals are heartfelt, and lively. The talented vocalist was part of Rex Sunday afternoon "JazzInToronto" Songbird Series. She was part of an excellent quintet and the appreciation of her mates was clearly visible on the stage. With Roberto Occhipinti – Bass, Al Cross - Drums, Eric Boucher- piano and William Sperandai - trumpet.

La linda Belinda is an excellent flautist and vocalist. I was lucky to seen Belinda twice at the Havana Jazz Festival, She performed at "Música es Mujer" in Teatro América, and few days later, she was featured performer in Bobby Carcasses (her musical padre) showcase of his best fifty, or there about, musical friends. Flute is not a common jazz instrument in my part of the world. I can count flautists (or flutist) with fingers on one hand. In Cuba, there is definitely more of them. Not sure who the singer with her is.

The age of the musicians varies at Grossman's. This is quite unusual in the rest of the city. Smokin' Joe van Rossem and Josh Williams are more than 60 years apart in age, but connect on the musical stage.
Joe is an esteemed musician in the traditional jazz community, and respected sailor in the regatta community. Josh started to come to with his mom to Grossman's few years ago and sometimes they would let him sit-in on the drums. Now, he is a regular guest on the drums and he also sings: Mackie Messer, Aliza Jane and few other standards, with great enthusiasm. From a shy boy, he became almost an extrovert. Audiences also range from babies to centenarians. I want to celebrate my 100th birthday there. Still have few years to plan it...;-)
