I find it necessary to take time to appreciate the ordinary once in awhile. Do not discount the beauty of the common Blue Jay or its type A personality. These birds set off an alarm when a snake would come too close to our koi pond. They are accomplished vocalists. Yesterday I watched one splash unabashedly in the bird bath, then sit on the edge and mimic the screech of a Red-Tailed Hawk. So much more than ordinary.

Rebecca is vocalist and trumpeter and performed in a back patio of 'Pamenar' which seats about 30 people (uncomfortably 😄) Michael is Rebecca's long time partner, so I purposely included him in the photo. Kensington Jazz Festival was back after forced hiatus, the attendance was about 60% of previous years, but the concerts were 100% wonderful.

Legendary trumpeter Gregory Stafford has been coming to Toronto for many years, sometimes for few days, long weekend or even a week. Gregg has many friends in Toronto trad jazz community and who could, showed up. The band started with 7 musicians, but by the time the evening was over there must have been 20 musicians on Tranzac Club stage. Stafford played on Friday, day before and next day at unannounced concert at Grossman's. Always a treat.

Alex is an actor, singer, composer and photographer, who brings you new tunes wrapped in old time feeling. He sounds like Sinatra; his mannerism is also from the 1950s-60s. I have seen him treating his numerous fans, who range from twentysomething to seventysomething, with kindness and respect. The vocalist was nominated for 2022 Juno Award. (Canadian Grammy). His band the 'Jazz Mavericks' include Jacob Gorzhaltsan-sax, Ewen Farncombe-piano, Daniel Botos-drums and Ben Dwyer on bass. At 'Tapestry' on the day it opened under new ownership.

Bewick's Wren at Hidden Springs near Boise, Idaho

"If you come across a noisy, hyperactive little bird with bold white eyebrows, flicking its long tail as it hops from branch to branch, you may have spotted a Bewick’s Wren. These master vocalists belt out a string of short whistles, warbles, burrs, and trills to attract mates and defend their territory, or scold visitors with raspy calls. Bewick’s Wrens are still fairly common in much of western North America, but they have virtually disappeared from the East."

On stage at, Maxan Sushi and Jazz

I had the pleasure of working with Linda last night at, Maxan Jazz and Sushi, here in Las Vegas. I also wanted to try my Canon 5D Classic with the Canon 70-200mm f2.8L IS USM out in a jazz nightclub situation. It was a win-win situation!

Searching for the source of loud melodies from treetops in Melbourne, I found this bird.

A Yellow-throated Vireo singing his little heart out. My first time to photograph one of these Llittle beauties. It has been a season of firsts!

Yellow-throated Vireos are early spring migrants that travel from their wintering grounds in Central and South America.

Sharon Jones was battling pancreatic cancer, undergoing treatment, but still came to Toronto and gave an unbelievable performance. I did not know about her sickness; I found out just prior her concert. She was visibly in pain and suffering, but on the stage, she was a different person; Dynamic and clearly the most energetic person on the stage. Miss Sharon Jones voice retained full power and for the encore, she invited the audience to sing and dance with her on the stage! Raised in Brooklyn, prior to becoming a singer, she worked such jobs as armored car guard for Wells Fargo and a corrections officer at Rikers Island prison. Sharon was really loved by her band and fans. She toured and performed tirelessly until he death, later that year (2016) at 60.

I think this Grey Wagtail was trying to tell me something.

In Montreal they have several jazz bands entertaining the crowds in the afternoon, before the stage acts starts. This year, Montreal based 'The Early Jazz Band' was one group I managed to see and really enjoyed. 'The Early Jazz' takes their repertoire from the New Orleans swing of the 1920s, 1930s-1940s. Pure fun. I seen them first time, but one of Toronto's saxophone/clarinet musician, who comes to Montreal every year same time as me, played with few of them in Toronto. Jean-Sébastien Leblanc - clarinet is their leader and Dominic Desjardins - banjo/vocals is core member of the group. Jonathan Gagné – drum and Mathieu Roberge – double bass performed on this day.

Amazing how these birds are so brilliantly colored on their face, throat, and breast, yet be so well camouflaged on the rest of their body.

I followed this individual around for about half an hour. It sure was vocal!

Pianist Saxophonist Vocalist

The Wintergarten Orchestra does not perform often. It's a collection of mostly classically trained musicians, who get together once in a while to play jazz from 1920's-1930's. Led by trombonist Bill Beecroft and fronted by two vocalists Tanya Wills and Ted Atherton. Tanya sings in English, French and "einwandfrei" German and her repertoire includes some Marlene Dietrich classics. Both vocalist are also actors, so it's a show, musical performance and a dance all in one. The sousaphone player is Herb Poole. Herb is an interesting character, who not only plays variety of brass instruments, but also repairs them.

"Music washes away the dust of every day life"--- Art Blakey

“The only thing that matters is to feel the fado. The fado is not meant to be sung; it simply happens. You feel it, you don’t understand it and you don’t explain it.” – Amália Rodrigues

The top dog is Matt Coldwell on the bass, Donovan Locke is almost always there to sing, but otherwise the cast of characters changes every week as musicians come from other gigs to jam. On the drums is one of the owners of this club Gianni Ferarro.
