The original batch of St. Ludwig class light cruisers were build in the mid 1920s during the height of the first Great War. Highly advanced for their time, they were the first modern light cruisers for the Vinnish navy, with a severe battery of main guns and a whole lot of torpedoes. Light and fast, the ship was a bit top-heavy, and it was thought that more could be done to turn the ship into a real monster of a "light cruiser."

This began with an entire redesign of the hull to accommodate another engine (with another smokestack) and an additional main gun turret. This brings the St. Ludwig's armament to fifteen 6in main guns in addition to her secondary 5in guns. This ended up being essentially an entire rebuild of the ship rather than a simple refit, but the ship and her class are to retain their proud name, as ordered by der Cheftaen himself, paying homage to his humble home town. The St. Ludwigs are now some of the most formidable light cruisers in the world.

Haarlemmerweg

The Haarlemmerweg is a road in the municipality of Amsterdam, in the direction of Haarlem. The road runs from the Nassaukade to Halfweg.

Along the Haarlemmertrekvaart between Amsterdam and Haarlem, opened in 1632, a towpath was constructed on the south side for the tow barges. This path was paved in 1762, with which the path became the Haarlemmerweg. The part between Halfweg and Haarlem is called Haarlemmerstraatweg, the part in Haarlem is called Amsterdamsevaart. At the time when the Netherlands was incorporated into the French Empire, the road was elevated to Route impériale 202 in 1811. Originally the Haarlemmerweg was not in Amsterdam but in the municipality of Sloten. In 1877 the first part was located north of the Staatsliedenbuurt in Amsterdam. Since the annexation of the entire municipality of Sloten in 1921, the Haarlemmerweg has been located almost entirely in the municipality of Amsterdam. Seen from the center of Amsterdam, the road is an extension of the Haarlemmerstraat and Haarlemmerdijk.

Several homesteads were built in the 17th and 18th centuries along the Haarlemmerweg and in particular in the vicinity of the village of Sloterdijk.

There was also some industry in the 19th century. The Westergasfabriek, which played an important role in the gas supply of Amsterdam, was also built in 1883 north of the Haarlemmervaart. The extensive site is now a cultural park. In 1897, a machine pump building and water reservoir of the Amsterdam Municipal Water Pipeline (GWL) Amsterdam was also built on the road. A residential area known as the Waterwijk was built in 1997 and 1998 on the GWL site.

Three mills arose along the Haarlemmerweg: Molen de Bloem, the 1100 Roe and the 1200 Roe. A rod is an old measure of length of 3,767 meters. The ammunition complex for the Defense Line of Amsterdam was 1800 rods. d'Ahundred Roe is also a well-known concept along the Haarlemmerweg. There was an inn with that name here. Amsterdam's first station was built opposite this in 1839: this became Station d'Ahundred Roe. In the same year, a train departed from this station for the first time in Dutch history.

In 1882 a tram line was built between Nassauplein and Sloterdijk. It ran with steam traction until 1888, then as a horse tram, from 1905 in municipal operation. In 1916, this was the last Amsterdam tram line to be electrified. Then line 12 ran here, which, after the annexation of Sloterdijk by Amsterdam in 1921, was succeeded by line 18 in 1922. This was replaced on January 1, 1951 by bus L, later 18, since 2006 bus 21 has been running instead of line 18 on the Haarlemmerweg.

In 1904 the tram line Amsterdam - Zandvoort of the Electrische Spoorweg-Maatschappij (ESM) was opened, which lay along the Haarlemmerweg between Sloterdijk and Halfweg. This was discontinued on September 1, 1957 and replaced by bus service of the NZH (since 1999 Connexxion).

The Haarlemmerweg is now the northern boundary of the Staatsliedenbuurt and the Bos en Lommer, Slotermeer and Geuzenveld districts.

The Haarlemmerweg was widened several times. The last time was after the discontinuation of the tram to Zandvoort when the road west of Sloterdijk was given two separate carriageways with four lanes. Until then the road was a three-lane with the middle lane serving as an overtaking lane for both directions! The section west of Halfweg was partially converted into a motorway in the 1970s. This was given the designation A5. Later this became the A200 and N200 respectively. The Amsterdam part of the Haarlemmerweg is indicated as s103 and is a city street until Sloterdijk. The first part between Nassauplein and van Hallstraat is a bottleneck where traffic regularly gets stuck.

During the next renovation of the Haarlemmerweg between 2018 and 2020, the N200 between the A10 ring road and the Seineweg became an urban road. That means a road with more greenery and trees, a road with a maximum speed of 50 km/h and extra crossings and bridges for pedestrians and cyclists.
