Violetter Lacktrichterling - Laccaria amethystina

African violets hold a special charm. Their petals seem as soft as a feather and their ruffles glint with sparkles in the sunlight. This violet is loved above all others, as it was passed along to me by my mother. When family members are no longer with us, their memory is triggered by the smallest things...and that is a very good thing indeed.

For a Peaceful Friday!

Violet-capped Woodnymphs are hummingbirds that inhabit a wide range of habitats from untouched forests, to scrub, to suburban and city gardens. They gather nectar from both native and non-native flowers and also hunt for insects. During certain parts of the year, Violet-capped Woodnymphs migrate short distances. Males have a bluish violet cap and sparkle with dark green above and gold-green below. Females are dark greenish above and off-white below. During the breeding season, these woodnymphs adorn the outside of their nests with ferns and lichen.

Crazy Tuesday - Two Colors

Violets in. our lawn. Perfect for May Day baskets.

Rancho San Antonio, Santa Clara County, CA.

The Violet Sabrewing (Campylopterus hemileucurus) is the largest species of hummingbird in Middle America. It occurs in montane forests from southern Mexico south to western Panama, and also is found at forest edges, in second growth forests, banana plantations, and flower gardens. The elevational range of the Violet Sabrewing in Mexico primarily is 500-2000 m, and 1500-2400 m in Costa Rica, but it frequently descends to lower elevations outside of the breeding season. In both sexes, the outer tail feathers have broad white tips. Otherwise the plumage of the male is very dark: the head, upper back and underparts are deep violet, and the lower back and rump are dark green. The female is paler green above, and mostly light gray below, with a blue throat. The males are polygynous and are not involved in the parental care. Males display at communal display grounds (leks), where up to 10 males sing from the understory. Females build bulky nests, lined with fine plant fibres and mosses. The nests of the Violet Sabrewings are placed 1-6 m above the streams or rivers on a horizontal branch. doi.org/10.2173/bow.viosab1.01

These gorgeous violet flowers are actually impostors, they are not violets, but that doesn't matter because they are beautiful. African violet flowers get their name from their resemblance to true violets (Violaceae), but they are actually a completely different genus: Saintpaulia ionantha.

It will be easier for me if you comment on the photo so I can respond faster. Thank you for your visit and comments, really appreciated!!

Imagine my excitement to find these nesting in the parking lot wall of a winery on the Naramata bench, Penticton. Not sure if this is a female or a juvenile.

Another Violet is coming on Flickr tomorrow.

"These aerial insectivores perform acrobatic stunts over lakes and streams high in the sky in search of flying insects. Violet-green Swallows can look dark at first, but their true colors come to life when sunlight illuminates their metallic green backs and iridescent purple rumps. They are a common sight in the West in spring and summer, but they vanish to Mexico and Central America for the winter. They can be distinguished from other swallows by the white patches on the sides of their rump and their white cheeks."
