Brazilian group started out in the early 1970s as Grupo Seleção, a cover band. In 1973 they changed the band's name to Azymuth, inspired by a Marcos & Paulo Sérgio Valle song. (They also backed Marcos Valle on his Previsão Do Tempo album released in 1973.) In 1975 they released their first album, initially titled Azimüth. It featured the hit Linha Do Horizonte. In 1976 they scored another minor hit with Melô Da Cuíca ; Jazz Carnival, taken from the 1979 album Light As A Feather, was another hit, and 1980's Dear Limmertz also became a popular staple. The trio moved to the United States in the early 1980s, producing a number of albums that never came out in Brazil, and placing their bets on a mix of samba, funk and jazz that they defined as MPB-jazz (referring to Música Popular Brasileira). The main composer, keyboardist J. R. Bertrami, left the group in 1988, and was replaced by Jota Moraes and Marinho Boffa, but returned in the middle of the following decade, when the group signed with the label Far Out. After Bertrami died in 2012 keyboardist Kiko Continentino joined drummer Ivan "Mamão" Conti and bassist Alex Malheiros to continue the band.

Junior Alli-Balogun, aka JAB, makes music somewhere between spiritual jazz and deep house. The London-based percussionist moves between earth and space, working with multiple instruments to stay in flight. His alterations are slight, but important. Regardless of how momentous his compositions become, they generally start out as a series of looping drum patterns, centering the music and focusing your attention.

'Directions', an extended groove formed out of the interplay of organ and percussion that slowly becomes a collective improvisation. Before it ever branches out into a multifaceted organ-inflected, danceable jam, the song starts with a collection of meditative drum solos.

David Pritchard (born March 3, 1949) is an American acoustic, classical, and jazz guitarist.

Pritchard began studying classical guitar at the age of 12 but as a teenager his interest turned to jazz. As a high school student, he founded the jazz-rock group Quintet de Sade and at the age of 20 he joined the Gary Burton Quartet, replacing guitarist Jerry Hahn. In 1970, he co-founded, along with pianist/composer Pete Robinson, the jazz-fusion group Contraband. Several years followed where he freelanced in the Los Angeles area while also teaching at the Dick Grove School of Music. In 1978 he recorded his first album as a leader, Lightyear, followed a year later by City Dreams, featuring trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, pianist Patrice Rushen, drummer Chester Thompson, and bassist/producer Larry Klein.

Mandrake or Mandrake Som, pseudonym of Ivanir do Nascimento (Guaratinguetá, May 21, 1934 – Rome, September 8, 1988), was a Brazilian singer and percussionist naturalized Italian, active in Italy since the late 1950s.

The nickname comes from his participation in a Brazilian television program in 1959 in which Enrico Simonetti took part as conductor and arranger: during an episode dedicated to magic, Ivanir do Nascimento, being the only member of the orchestra with a moustache, impersonated the magician Mandrake, later taking his name definitively. Mandrake takes part in shows and recordings with internationally renowned artists such as Jair Rodrigues, Elis Regina, João Gilberto, Maria Bethânia, Chico Buarque, Vinícius de Moraes, Wilson Simonal, Carlos Piper, Roberto Carlos Braga, Gal Costa.

Hermeto Pascoal is a noted Brazilian composer and multi-instrumentalist. His compositions appear on albums by Miles Davis and other jazz heavyweights. Pascoal’s sextet is an extra--sensory musical unit that has been with him for over 40 years and used to rehearse daily. The music runs from the lyrical and romantic to raucous, from folkloric to his futuristic angular melodies, often creating a dense barrage of sound. The band sometimes uses synthesizers and saxophones as well as a battery of invented instruments—hub caps, teapots, and bowls of rocks— guided by Hermeto’s wizardry and benevolent spirit
