A friend introduced me to this overture several years ago by way of the classic Decca recording by Pierino Gamba. I have that London BlueBack LP. A rarely recorded overture (and pretty much ignored in the concert hall, it has much to offer in terms of drama, including antiphonal trumpet calls to battle.

I suspect Gamba may have come to know this piece through this particular Italian recording.
