Rioters surround and pose in front of a flaming box in the middle of Broad Street.

Despite an upsetting loss to Butler with a score of 70-62, Virginia Commonwealth University students and Richmond residents still decided to take to the streets to celebrate their home team getting father than they ever had before in NCAA March Madness. VCU Police, Richmond City Police, and Virginia State Police were all on hand to control the crowds. However, their over-aggressive tactics of using brute force, tear gas canisters, and mace pellets caused the crowd to escalate into a riot. Rioters destroyed property, started a fire, and even hurled rocks at the incoming riot police as they forced them down Broad and Laurel Streets.

View from the fifth floor of the VCU building. Stairs are now up to the fourth floor on the right. On the left, walls are going up on the 11th floor of the Square Apartments. Both buildings are about equal in height, although The Square has four more floors.
