Remembering Holland

Thinking of Holland

I see wide rivers

slugging through

limitless low-lying land,

lines of implausibly

gauzy poplars

like feathered plumes

in far distances stand;

and sunken away

in the formidable vastness

the farmsteads

scattered are found,

tree clumps, villages,

pollarded steeples

churches and elms

in one great design bound.

the sky hangs low there

and in grey vapours of

colour

the sun there

is slowly blurred,

and in all the regions

the voice of the water

with its eternal disasters

is dreaded and heard.

On the way between Cedar City and Hurricane / Utah via Kolob Road aka Kolob Reservoir Road, very worthwhile but a seemingly endless long stretch with a lot of variety.

Another re-edit of an image that I'd taken during a trip to the Baltic Sea island Usedom several years ago. Duly slid for Sliders Sunday – you can find the almost SooC original upload in the first comment. In the original, un-cropped image the beach line is almost exactly in the middle, because I hadn't dared to get any closer to the person that was lying there so picturesquely (and, as an afterthought from pandemic times: perfectly socially distanced). And since I had been so far away the gulls are mere spots of white in the distance, but I think they are still easily identifiable as gulls, albeit pretty impressionistic – or even pointillistic – gulls ;)

HSS, Everyone, and have a safe and nice new week ahead!

… a not quite typical maritime sim – shells and swans provide the dwelling for our merchants, a light realm of water and atypical plants, vastness, waterfalls and a dangerous abyss that tries to swallow the dreams of Doriath’s inhabitants….

Believe it or not, this is perhaps my favourite image from the whole trip to the Outer Hebrides. 21 ducks resting in the wide expanse of Luskentyre estuary at low tide and in drizzly weather. It sums up what Luskentyre is all about for me - vastness, peace and tranquillity that allows the soul to rest.

Thank you all for visiting. Your comments mean a lot!

I took this capture after being out on the outcrop scoping areas for sunset there in Canyonlands at the Green River Overlook.

I was heading back to a spot with some reflection pools from the recent rains the day before to get a few more captures closer to sunset, then also to grab my tripod for sunset ... when by chance I looked back to the large outcrop and saw this woman out on the ledge.

Unbelievable views and vastness there in Canyonlands, and it can leave you feeling so small ... and that is the feeling I think this story tells as well in the frame.

Wonder if anyone took my photo while I was at the edge.

Today we are in southern Wyoming exploring, and had a fabulous photo session with a marmot that eventually came closer as I sheltered in place nearby :) That was a lot fun in the rocky terrain. Some of those shots and other wildlife taken on this trip will come later once we are back home in Maryland.

the remote vastness and wild beauty of iceland's immense Westfjords offer an experience which those who shared it will never forget and always yearn for repeating I guess.

Night at the beach

Westland, Holland.

The pink full moon rose over the vastness of Lake Mead National Park.

Rima San Giuseppe & Macugnaga. Italy.

The valley of Sermenza river seen from the pass named Piccolo Altare, Little Altar.

The small village of Rima is visible in the green of the valley below, it's a nice and long trail from that village to this remote pass.

BTW: after 147 days, being able to drive again and go hiking wherever I want feels priceless!

Have a great weekend!

Buon fine settimana!

imagine the joy of having all that vast pasture and terrain to yourself without fences and around you the incredible beauty of Iceland's Snaefellsnes peninsula during the short but all the more intense and beautiful summers!! (Let's not think of winter yet! ) :)

Your packing up your sleeping bag,

Your lantern and your tent,

and you're off to find the life you lost,

But you're not sure where it went,

And I hope those mountains teach you,

How to stand both tall and proud,

That you see your life much clearer,

With your head above the clouds,

I hope you swim through rivers,

With their currents swift and fast,

That they show you must be careful,

When you wash away your past,

I hope that you are humbled,

By the vastness of the sea,

That the eagles high above you,

Make you feel like you are free,

I hope when night has fallen,

and your fire's just a spark.

That the stars shine to remind you,

That there's beauty in the dark,

But most of all I'm hoping,

That You're learning while you roam,

That no matter the distance,

You can always come back home.

One of my wishes is that those dark trees,

So old and firm they scarcely show the breeze,

Were not, as 'twere, the merest mask of gloom,

But stretched away unto the edge of doom.

I should not be withheld but that some day

into their vastness I should steal away,

Fearless of ever finding open land,

or highway where the slow wheel pours the sand.

I do not see why I should e'er turn back,

Or those should not set forth upon my track

To overtake me, who should miss me here

And long to know if still I held them dear.

They would not find me changed from him they knew--

Only more sure of all I though was true.
