Stadthuisbrug (bridge that serves as a town square) in central Utrecht.

Utrecht is an old city in the Netherlands that originated as a Roman castellum. It used to stand on the Rhine, which has since changed course. The main (or at least the most noticeable) architectural feature of the city center is the Dom Tower, seen here in the background. It used to be part of the main St. Martin's Cathedral. But now it stands detached, overshadowing the much diminished cathedral, since its nave collapsed in 1674.

Exposure blend of two images (1/6 sec, 1/80 sec). Each image is the median of a stack of 30 images.

Some photographers wax lyrically the virtues of the sunset while others profess their love for the dawn of the new day, I think the reality of it is whether you are a morning person or not.

For myself sleeping in is 6am so my preference by default is the early morning light but also for myself I like the peace and solitude dawn brings to an otherwise busy location allowing you to really soak in the local flavor.

Similarly for me I like to see how and where the people live in the lands I visit not just what they have on display for tourists but a little peek behind the curtain so to speak.

This shot is of a residential area in Utrecht that I felt combines both ideals for me the early morning light and the places less visited giving the scene a peaceful easy feeling and a slice of Utrecht life.

I took this with my D750 and Nikon 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6 Lens at 112mm 1/20s, f/11 ISO 200 processed in LR, PS +Lumenzia, Topaz Denoise

She is a queen who defends her throne,

In the midst of chaos and confusion.

She rules her court with pride and power,

And watches over every scrap and clutter.

Some may find her unfamiliar or alienating,

But those who see her strutting through her courtyard,

Quickly realise her true glamour and charisma,

And that she is a queen, a queen of trash, like no other.

Although most of what I post is from abroad, I frequently take pictures around home, but never have the time to show. This one here is close to home. In a city like Utrecht it is hard to imagine you can find these places, but it is one of its charmes. Rural impressions.

Utrecht is often overlooked for flashier Amsterdam and for that I am glad, for me it embodies gezellig at a city level my only regret is not having discover this jewel on my many trips to the Netherlands very early on.

Pictured here is the Dom tower the highest and oldest church tower in Holland at the height of 112m, it is the symbol of Utrecht it can be seen almost everywhere in the city center and even if not seen heard from the ringing of its 13 bells ranging in size from 400-8500 Kg.

De Haar Castle (formerly Het Huys te Haer) is a monumental castle in the Utrecht village of Haarzuilens. It is the largest castle in the Netherlands. It was rebuilt from 1892 on the ruins of the old castle in neo-Gothic style. In 1890, Baron Étienne van Zuylen van Nyevelt van de Haar (1860-1934) inherited the castle ruins from his father Gustave van Zuylen (1818-1890). Étienne was married in Paris on August 16, 1887 to Baroness Hélène de Rothschild (1863-1947), an heiress from the French branch of the wealthy banking family De Rothschild. Thanks in part to her fortune, Étienne had the means to have the ancestral castle rebuilt in a grandiose way.
