Dead Horse Point State Park, Utah
Dead Horse Point State Park is perhaps Utah's most spectacular state park. Dead Horse Point is a promontory of stone surrounded by steep cliffs near Moab, Utah. The overlook at Dead Horse Point is 6,000 feet above sea level. Two thousand feet below, the Colorado River winds its way from the continental divide in Colorado to the Gulf of California, a distance of 1,400 miles.
The San Juan river cut this 900' canyon forming several bends known as the goose necks of the San Juan river.

I hiked into Goblin Valley in the middle of the night with what I thought was two very small LED panels. Even with both turned to 20% and covered with a white cloth, I still had to move them way way back. This pano was created from 8 images. Each of those images were created from 2-4 images stacked in by Starry Landscape Stacker 1.8.0 for noise reduction. The Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park had raised my expectations a lot, but by the time we reached there it was awfully late, and the sun was setting behind a shroud of thick clouds putting most of the landscape in dark shadows. To top it off it started drizzling ... Not the things I had looked forward to. But will have to live with it. So we took a few shots neverthless to make use of the $6 we had contributed to the park economy. In between the sun peeked out a bit. And we also got to see a rainbow. That was to be my first rainbow pic. I didn't get a good composition on it though. It poped up on some random place with nothing to add in the foreground. No pot of gold or a Leprechaun .

Cedar Breaks National Monument near St George Utah and Bryce Canyon National Park. The plateau is at an elevation of 10000 ft with the canyon some 2000 ft below. The orange and yellow coloration of the canyon walls are the result of copper and manganese salts.

I'm posting three images of a Short-eared Owl I shot earlier this summer. All three are heavy crops so I've hesitated posting them. But I really like them. They are about 3mpx images.
The Dead Horse Point canyon was formed during hundreds by millions of years of deposition and erosion. The layers of rock were originally deposited by wind and sediment in streams, rivers and seas. The erosional processes that carved these intricate canyons are gravity, the river, wind, moisture and the freezing and thawing action of water. The hardness of the layer of rock determines if it forms a cuff or slope.
The bottom layer of sediment where the river is now was deposited over 275 million years ago.

This shot was taken at dusk while standing on the drive of Dead Horse Point State Park's Kayenta campground site 21...one of our favorite spots. The wildflowers were in bloom everywhere in all shades of yellow, purple, blue, red, and white. At this time of day, the campers have returned from their day's activities of hiking, biking and jeeping and soft quietness begins to fill the air as everyone settles in for the night. A gentle breeze begins to blow from the west cooling the red sandstone. PEACE!
The canyon has been the site of Hollywood films such as Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Electric Horseman, and Jeremiah Johnson.
