Lots of rain this winter has filled the pools of Snow Canyon.

Amidst all of the grandeur in Utah's Big Five National Parks, its state parks give no quarter. We loved our hike in Kodachrome Basin State Park, as seen here in this panoramic taken on April 24, 2023. The Angel's Palace Trail there is recommended for photographers, which is the hike we took. Kodachrome is a short distance from Bryce, so factor it in for your Bryce visit.

Dead Horse Point State Park is a state park of Utah in the United States, featuring a dramatic overlook of the Colorado River and Canyonlands National Park. The park covers 5,362 acres (2,170 ha) of high desert at an altitude of 5,900 feet (1,800 m).

A view of the canyons from Dead Horse Point State Park. The rain was just clearing and the sky was filled with clouds.

Here are the Petrified Sand Dunes in Snow Canyon State Park, UT, May, 2025. I love dune topography, but this took it to another level of geological wonder. I recall this terrain in a part of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid movie (circa 1969), as they were being tracked by Lord Baltimore and the lawmen. He could even track them across this. "Who are those guys?"

I love colorful sunsets, but I think dramatic storm clouds are my favorite. This was taken earlier this week

Here is one of many photos of the high desert in Utah that makes one feel like they are on another planet. This is Snow Canyon State Park, from the Canyon Overlook, May, 2025. As I have mentioned, the state parks near Utah's Big Five are worth a look, this one in St. George near Zion.

It has been a tough summer, with lots going on. My daughter is getting married, and my priorities have changed,at least for the next little while.

I have over the past few weeks had computer problems and it will be awhile before I get it back. Thanks for visiting I hope to view your sites soon.

WISHING YOU ALL A MERRY CHRISTMAS

Utah’s Kodachrome Basin State Park, on the Colorado Plateau, consists of monolithic stone spires, called sedimentary pipes, accentuate multihued sandstone layers that reveal geologic history from the Jurassic period (180 million years ago) to the Cretaceous period (95 million years ago).

There is lighting with LLL (Low Level Lighting) . This is not light painting but is very dim constant light that is left on and attempts to match starlight in intensity, typically done with light panels on tripods. One advantage is that it creates little or no visible light pollution and does not destroy your night vision. You cannot even see the light until your eyes become dark adapted, and then you can barely see it.

Please see: www.lowlevellighting.org

Why Care? Arches and Canyonlands Nat’l Parks have recently banned light painting for workshops in 2017 and may ban all night photography in 2018. LLL is less disruptive and invasive. Arches officials are considering the lower impact of @lowlevellighting and need further input. It is up to us to define LLL as a different technique, differing from Flash Photography or Light Painting, so it can be judged on its own merits.

The Three Sisters, Goblin Valley State Park, Utah. The lighting is done with an LED light panel, made for video, with a warming filter that comes with the light. The light is too blue without the warming filter. This is an F&V Z96 panel I got on Amazon.com. It is placed on a 10 foot, 3 m high lightweight tripod (from B&H Photo), turned down to the lowest setting and left on the whole time. You can hardly see any light at all. I call this Low Level Landscape Lighting , or just Low Level Lighting (LLL). This is not classic light painting. Once you get it set up you can move around, get different angles, etc. (This discussion is in response to a question I received).

Looks Best Enlarged in Black......It was still very dark, with only the slightest bit of light showing. With 8sec at an f stop of 5 this is what I ended up with

There wasn't much color but,I loved the clouds the other night. I Am shooting to the east and the sun had gone down off camera to the left. I was just amazed at the light hitting the mountains to the east

Goblin Valley State Park, Utah, at Night with the Milky Way above. Walking through Goblin Valley at night is like walking through an alien land, erie and otherworldly. It's definately worth a visit! Canon 6D camera, Sigma 15mm fisheye lens, f 2.8, 30 sec exposure, ISO 6400. Hope you enjoy!

The rock formations have been likened to Goblins. If you let your imagination run wild, you can imagine that the rising sun turned the Goblins into stone in some ancient time, and the passing eons have eroded them into these shapes. The place certainly has a lot of atmosphere especially at night. The park is not all that large, and can be covered in few hours unless you want to hike around a lot.

Thanks for the kind comments!
