Upstream

I found this scene while wondering around Whinlatter with the family over the weekend. I took the opportunity to take a couple of images and look for compositions. I will have to go back at different times of the day when there is softer light or rain/mist.

Hovering above the Brandsgil valley, you can really see the brilliant colours in the volcanic rock. Bright reds and yellows contrast with the patches of green vegetation.

Someone has built an impromptu dam across the ford at Quarrymill Park.

My first foray into the valley since February. Never keep me away for so long ever again.

150254 cruises across the Afon Llugwy bridge at Betws-y-Coed working the 16:20 Llandudno - Blaenau Ffestiniog. This is about the best picture you'll get at this location, it's never been a photter's favourite (most pics of this location on Flickr, if not all, belong to me) and given the lack of even historical studies, it maybe never has been foliage free to warrant photographing.

7th October 2020.

There is no challenge in letting the wind guiding your way. The strength is needed when you decide to go against in. Going upstream instead of following the crowd.

Today has been a rainy day, but there was a moment in between showers. A moment big enough to allow me to create.

The woods at Cloghleah upstream of the bridge.

Most people understandably photograph the river and woods below the bridge but I have always thought the area upstream has a particular appeal as well.

Salmon!

Tomorrow I'm moving to Manhattan, so uploads/feedback may be questionable for the next couple of days.

Coho Salmon, Salmon Cascades, Sol Duc Valley, Olympic National Park, Washington.

This has got to be one of the coolest things I've photographed. A short trail in Sol Duc Valley in Olympic National Park leads you to these cascades where each year around October, Coho Salmon jump up these waterfalls and swim up the Sol Duc River to lay their eggs. It is definitely something special to watch.

Another beautiful view from our seven mile hike into Happy Valley beyond Tumalo Falls. There are places like this along the trail where the crystal clear water gently ambles its way downstream, then out of nowhere the water violently plummets over one of the half dozen or more waterfalls along the stream - some hundreds of feet high.

Looking upstream along the stream that leads to Stórhöfði. You can see the brilliant colours of the volcanic rock. The springs on the slopes above the valley floor are all hot springs — there is a noticeable odour of hydrogen sulphide in the air.

The old Almaden mercury mine and factory sits at the other end of the Guadeloupe River, 14 miles upstream from the Alviso Slough.

This mine is the source of the mercury in the warning signs at the downstream end of the river. It is in Almaden Quicksilver County Park near San Jose, CA.

Humans have mined cinnabar (mercury ore) here since before the Europeans arrived. The native people dug pits to gather the red mineral for the vermillion color. The Spanish and Mexicans mined it for mercury and named the mine after the Almaden mercury mine in Spain. The American took it over and industrialized it during the Gold Rush, since mercury helps with extracting the gold from the ore. It was valuable enough for President Lincoln to secure it with California-based Union troops during the Civil War.

This factory represents the mine's last boom period during World War II when mercury was important to munitions, especially in triggers for other explosives.

The ore is loaded in the top center and crushed. It is then fed into the big pipe (the rotary furnace) on the right, where is it tumbled and heated to vaporize the mercury. The mercury vapor is then condensed in the curved pipes on the left of the white house. The mercury is collects from spigots at the bottom of the pipes. This is an industrialized, highly efficient, version of the kilns and condensing chambers used by earlier miners. I imagine it was a loud, hot and smelly factory when it was running in the 1940s and 1950s.

The area has been a county park since 1976. I love riding my mountain bike there. You can find old mine shafts, buildings, and pits along the trials. It is quite exciting, like an old Scooby Doo cartoon. But mercury is a terrible poison to humans and most life. So, the beauty shrouds the misery of the miners and the poison that has seeped downstream and into San Francisco Bay.
