Nancy, whom I got to know on the streets of Toronto & have written about in previous posts, is in hospital. She's been there for 4 weeks. Two tumours were found on her spine, removed, then two steel rods inserted to support the spine. She has no feeling in her legs....it's possible she will not walk again. She's wearing a body brace ( a steel frame contraption ) until healing from the surgery is complete. And though she has a lot of discomfort, the truth is I've never seen her looking better. Without access to alcohol, street drugs or listerine, she's clean, clear-eyed & lucid....her intelligence & wacky sense of humour firmly in place. Tomorrow she's being moved to a care facility, where she will have physiotherapy sessions for the next 4 months. Long term plans for Nancy are undetermined as yet but she's been told she will not be going back to her room in Strachan House ( city sanctioned housing for the homeless) as the room can't accommodate the hoist that will need to be installed for her. This is not a loss to Nancy. She hates that place. Says it's an enclave of crack dealers & bed bugs. But at least, for the time being, she's safe, she's warm, she's no longer on the streets. Is it possible to see this latest of many misfortunes in her life as the proverbial blessing in disguise?

image : the pic above is from those I took first time I saw Nancy on the street, before I knew who she was. Below... taken yesterday in the hospital. Bad lighting. Bad photo. But I wanted to show it to you because I think the difference in her appearance is remarkable. As if the street's harsh realities have melted away. It's been 2 years since we met. It seems she & I have travelled far together. An honour to call her 'friend' now. She's a remarkable woman and a fierce activist for the plight of the homeless many.

Urgent mail! A busy morning for the reception staff at Fordhampton GP Surgery. The Royal Mail postie has arrived at the same time as the Blood & Laboratory vehicle. In the leftmost parking space is the Duty Doctor’s car, with green lightbar on the roof and BASICS & Compressed Gas warning stickers on the window.

Kit GM410 by Gaugemaster, 1:76 scale (OO Gauge) plastic kit building “Fordhampton Surgery”. The kit includes decals allowing it to be completed as a Doctor’s Surgery/Health Centre, a Nursing/Care/Rest Home or a Dental Practice. As this was a retirement gift for my Mum & Step Dad, Advanced Nurse Practitioner & General Practitioner respectively, I built it as the first option.

Going through some old photos from my last trip out of state and to Washington, DC in March 2020. Here a bus stop billboard for universal health care.

Cover for a charity book for Josh Medors. Poor guy is battling cancer, and as he works for himself, no health insurance yet plenty of medical bills to pay on top of fighting for his life. The US health care system it seems, is neither good for the health, nor actually cares about it's citizens. Please vote for someone who will give universal health care, like every other western nation has in some form, this november. Not that I mind donating and assisting people in need, but something needs to change.

This disabled woman, concerned about cuts to Medicaid, was among the crowd at a rally in Denver opposing the Republican backed American Health Care Avct (AHCA).

When my 8 mo./old grand-daughter became sick with flu-like symptoms that kept getting worse, she became terribly ill and needed to be air-lifted by helicopter to medical care in Boston - where she is currently being treated.

Mena, as it turns out, has Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia - poor baby. Unfortunately, health insurance is NOT health care in America - which makes crowd-funding sources so necessary. Please consider supporting Universal Health Care in our country!

From a rally outside the Massachusetts Association of Health Plans, near Government Center. The rally featured many local labor unions and community organizations.

“Barack Obama was not born in the United States.”

I’m inclined to call that statement a lie” but Kellyanne Conway prefers to call it an alternate fact. My rationale is that it is technically not true. Her rationale that millions of Americans — the Deplorables — believe it. Ever the gentleman, I will compromise with the lady and call it a myth.

Here are some other myths, generally believed to be true by the Deplorables…

Myths about…

ATHLETICS AND SPORT, e.g., Professional athletes are good role models for children.

BIGOTRY, e.g., All men are created equal.

CRIME AND JUSTICE, e.g., Sex offender laws are necessary to protect innocent people.

DRUGS AND DRUG ABUSE, e.g., Marijuana is a gateway drug and should remain criminalized.

EMPLOYMENT AND WORK, e.g., Affirmative Action laws are needed so that minorities have a chance for employment.

FOREIGN POLICY, e.g., Israel deserves foreign and military aid from the U.S.

GUNS, e.g., Guns don’t kill people.

HEROES, e.g., First responders are, by definition, heroes.

IDIOCY, e.g., Morally, ethically and intellectually, Republicans are no different than Democrats.

JINGOISM, e.g., Our system of representative government isn’t perfect but "it's better than the alternative."

KIDS AND PARENTING, e.g., A parent has the right to refuse to vaccinate her child; no one wants to risk autism.

LAW ENFORCEMENT, e.g., Crimes against policemen deserve harsher punishment than other crimes.

MILITARY, e.g., The Blue Angels are a necessary part of our military recruiting efforts.

NUDITY AND COMMUNITY STANDARDS, e.g., All public nudity should be criminalized.

OBAMACARE / UNIVERSAL HEALTHCARE, e.g., Obamacare is socialism.

POLITICS AND POLITICIANS, e.g., Republicans stand for smaller government; Democrats for larger government.

QUEENS, e.g., Allowing gay couples to marry diminishes the sanctity of marriage.

RELIGION, e.g., Religious beliefs of Americans must be respected and where necessary protected by law.

SEX, e.g., Sex with a minor is immoral.

TEACHING AND EDUCATION, e.g., School textbooks and materials should be approved by state or federal legislators.

U.S. FEDERAL GOVERNMENT, e.g., President Trump was right to pull out of the Paris Climate Accords.

VARIOUS THINGS NOT ELSEWHERE CLASSIFIED, e.g., All public services must be physically accessible to all disabled people.

WEALTH AND POVERTY, e.g., Poor people need government help.

XENOPHOBIA, e.g., We should stop all immigration because immigrants take American jobs.

YOU AND NARCISSICISM, e.g., I'm OK; You're OK.

ZEROES, e.g., The President of the United States deserves respect simply for holding that position.

A busy morning at the Doctor’s Surgery. A patient has presented for a routine appointment but is seriously unwell. A solo Paramedic in a fast response car (PRU) has been dispatched to help stabilise the man, who is complaining of crushing chest pains. Whilst the Ambulance Control Centre (ACC) is allocating a conveying, Double Crewed Ambulance (DCA), the solo Paramedic is beginning their investigations, taking a history, observations and a 12 lead Electrocardiogram (ECG).

The ECG shows ST elevation in multiple leads, the patient is sweaty, grey and is clearly in pain. The Paramedic, GP or Nurse administer 300mg of Aspirin, Glyceryl Trinitrate (GTN spray), and place a cannula to gain IV access for Morphine and fluids. In the ACC, a Dispatcher receives a radio update from the scene and finds then allocates a DCA, diverting them from another call. As the crew turn around, the PRU medic is transmitting the patient’s ECG tracing directly to the local Coronary Care Unit, they then call the Unit directly to discuss the ECG and the patient’s presentation.

As the Ambulance crew arrive and meet their colleague, the plan is already set. The patient will be transferred, under emergency driving conditions, to the “Cath Lab” to have a catheter guided through their arteries to find and remove the clot, and to leave a stent at the site, strengthening the vessel. As the patient appears unstable the PRU medic will also travel in the back of the Ambulance. They will be dropped back at their car once the patient is in the care of Hospital staff.

Meanwhile other patients continue to arrive for appointments. An elderly lady is leaving after seeing the Healthcare Assistant/Nursing Auxilliary to have bloods taken. A young woman using crutches is hobbling towards an appointment with the Practice Nurse to have her chronic leg ulcer dressed. And a father pushes his baby in their pram, running slightly late for a checkup with the Health Visitor. Inside prescriptions are printed, referrals made, urgent calls triaged by the Duty Doctor, and patients are seen and treated.

I opened a Chinese Fortune Cookie today for Mena that promised "Health and happiness are coming your way".

More effectively, my son Steven has started a crowd-funding site to help Mena, if you're interested. Thank all of you who have donated to help Mena. Unfortunately, health insurance is NOT health care in America - which makes funding sources like this so necessary. Please consider supporting Universal Health Care in our country!
