In America, this is Memorial Day Weekend. Here I have rendered a previous photograph from Arlington National Cemetery as it might appear as a painting. Have a wonderful weekend and stay safe.

When you think of a falcon, the image that comes to mind is probably of a compact, sleek-winged, speedy bird of prey that hunts in the sky. That describes the Peregrine Falcon, which is the fastest animal on Earth. There are about 60 falcon species around the world, and most are fast, aerial hunters.

But the Crested Caracara (Caracara cheriway) is not your typical falcon. Although the Caracara has the hooked raptorial bill and some other similarities to its cousins, other anatomical and behavioral features set this bird far apart.

The Caracara’s diet explains why this bird looks and acts so differently from typical falcons. Most falcons are fast-flyers that catch live, fast-moving prey, such as other birds. The Crested Caracara is more of a generalist in its diet, eating live prey and scavenging for carrion. The latter is the bird’s main food source, and since it certainly doesn’t need to be fast to pounce on animals that are already dead, the Caracara evolved into a relatively slow-flying, sluggish sort of falcon.

Like vultures, the Caracara has some featherless skin on its face. This is an adaptation to eating dead animals. Facial feathers would get fouled up by blood and fleshy bits during meals, so it’s helpful for scavengers to have few if any of them.

The Crested Caracara is often in competition with vultures. When caracaras can reach a carcass first, they will often try to defend this resource from any vultures that arrive later. They will also steal food from vultures and other birds given the chance.

Caracaras often patrol highways, looking for an easy meal of roadkill.

When Crested Caracaras eat live prey, they hunt small animals such as reptiles, insects, worms, crabs, and similar creatures. Baby birds are also a favorite snack.

Caracaras tend to either fly low or walk on the ground while foraging. In fact, they spend a lot of time walking around, which is rare among raptors. This is why they have such long legs for a falcon and claws that are relatively flat.

I found this one walking around in Osceola County, Florida.

After exploring Antelope Canyon we visited the Horseshoe Bend. It was majestic!

If you are planning the sunset you better get there way earlier. You are not the person who wanna see sunset so finding a right spot even to stand is a bit competitive. In my case I couldn't get the full 'horseshoe'. But wait a minute, there are too many full 'horseshoe's online.

I know it's getting too many Antelope Canyon photos on my stream. Stay with me. I promise I won't dump all of my memory card. :)

Risas a 50 centavos (Empire State Building, New York). Fotografía perteneciente a la exposición de fotografía "Fotosíntesis", serie Nueva York.

It started freezing here (very typical) so we escaped to the Golden State. Met good friends Thilan, Dulanjalie, Shehan and Suhadini after two years, enjoyed greenery for almost a week, ate all the delicious food Thilan and Dulanjalie cooked and returned home motivated and 5kg heavier. And then of course dug my car out of snow.

I attended the 49.5th annual Barona Powwow (9/5/2021) with this year’s theme being, “Back to our roots.” It was an amazing event filled with culture, dance performances and amazing colors!

Bored at home, check out my fine art prints:

On our way uphill on the Bright Angel trail.

A large white tornado touched down near Eldorado in Oklahoma on Thursday, May 23, 2024, in the early evening. It lasted for quite a while and took on various shapes. It caused some damage and was rated EF-2 on the Enhanced Fujita Scale.

"The Statue of Liberty (Liberty Enlightening the World) is a colossal neoclassical sculpture on Liberty Island in the middle of New York Harbor, in Manhattan, New York City. The statue, designed by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi and dedicated on October 28, 1886, was a gift to the United States from the people of France. The statue is of a robed female figure representing Libertas, the Roman goddess of freedom, who bears a torch and a tabula ansata (a tablet evoking the law) upon which is inscribed the date of the American Declaration of Independence, July 4, 1776. A broken chain lies at her feet. The statue is an icon of freedom and of the United States: a welcoming signal to immigrants arriving from abroad." - Wikipedia

I know this is not the best photo of Grand Canyon but again stay with me :)

So on day #2, we went on a hike in Grand Canyon. I was responsible for organizing the previous day (Antelope Canyon), so this one is on Thilan. The plan was to touch Colorado River.

We took Bright Angel trail, mostly because it has more rest areas (Kudos to Shehan for suggesting it in the first place) than the other. Starting was good. Everyone was on their best shape and we were walking as if there was a serial killer following us. Then, me and my wife started drifting from the pack. At one point Indika phoned and asked us to catch up, but we refused.

Then we reached 1.5 mile rest house. We were exhausted and a mile felt like 10 km. We rested for a while, emptied some RedBull and started walking again.

Then we hit 3 mile rest house. Rest of the group was waiting there so we finally became a single group again. They were chilaxing but me and my wife were at a point where we couldn't literally feel our legs. We had our brunch. Rest of the group was ready so they asked whether we are gonna join them. I looked uphill, at my wife and my legs and decided not to go further.

We rested for at least an hour and started the journey, uphill. My wife (and myself) was totally exhausted. We rested once in every 100 m (hate imperial units), whenever there was shadow cover, whenever someone passed us, and finally made it to the trail head. After few hours rest of the pack also returned. I'm not gonna say anything abut their situation. But they didn't go beyond Indian Garden for sure.

There is a saying in Sinhalese "පනින්න පෙර සිතා බලන්න". Its literal meaning is "Think before you jump". I think I nailed it.

So where were we? ah Apple Maps!

So we were reaching our jungle hideout in Williams. It was dark and quite (it's night, duh!!). The rental home owner had warned us we better check in during day time. (I gotta admit that the place is the best ever.) However we couldn't follow the directions, so the navigator put his faith into Apple Maps. If I had known it's Apple Maps I would have not followed his directions. But I didn't know, I was just the driver.

So we took an exit into a gravel road. It was bumpy, but straight. There was a board saying "Private Property, No Trespassing". Apple said proceed and I though that's where our place is. So we trespassed into someone's property. After some turns, there was a big locked gate in the middle of the road. Our good old friend Apple was still saying proceed. Then there was a board again facing the opposite side of the road saying "Private Property, No Trespassing". We were already in the private property, so that's for those who were in the other side of the gate (no one was there). That was the first U turn.

Then the navigator became navigators, armed with two Apple Maps. They were telling me take this turn and that turn and I was just following orders. When you are lost, the responsibility is completely on the navigator so I was totally innocent. After couple of turns we were again right at where we took the first U turn. Apple really wanted me to drive through that gate. That's the second U turn.

Apple was still given directions and once in every 30 seconds little voices (from the back seats) coming like "we have already tried this road", "isn't this a dead end!". I stopped counting U turns.

Then someone suggested calling Shehan. He drove from Texas so he had already checked in. So he must know the way in. He mentioned an intersection and asked us to drive there. When we reached there (using Apple Maps of course) he was right at other side of another locked gate. Of course the sign saying "No Trespassing" was there too. We were in someone's property all the time. I lost my temper.

Apple Maps sucks big time!

New York City - USA

Formation of a tornado in Kansas on Saturday, May 25, 2024. The tornado touched down for about 6 minutes, causing damage near the town of Anthony, and was classified as EF-2 on the Enhanced Fujita scale. We couldn't really observe it on the ground or photograph it because it was hidden by heavy rain, making it impossible to see from a distance due to the rain. I was only able to photograph the beginning of its formation, and we had to leave before it came down on us.

So we were on our way driving from Williams, AZ. Road was smooth, sky was clear, I was talking rubbish and everyone was happy. Then for whatever reason someone had to check time. We don't have a solid theory yet but somehow we had lost 1 hour. We all checked our phones and yes it was 1.30 pm (around). Our tour was scheduled to 2.30 pm and Google Maps predicted we'll be there at 3.00 pm. We were this much close to loose $700. (Do not use Apple Maps specially when you are lost. More on this later)

Then Thilan turned on the Need For Speed mode and we became airborne. Shehan suggested calling the tour company to check whether we can get a refund and rest of the crew were trying to digest what just happened. So I called them and the lady at the end said nothing but "OK" in a calm, sleepy voice. My wife had called them earlier so she said that's normal and we will be fine.

After few turns, we were right at the office sharply at 2.28 pm. I'm not gonna say anything further for legal reasons :O. I rushed to the counter and asked her whether the guide has left us. She was smiling. She said something like "blah blah 1.20 blah blah". I was so apologetic. I told her "Sorry blah blah sorry sorry blah late blah traffic blah from Canada blah blah". Then she looked at my eyes and said "It's still 1.20 pm dear!"

Damn timezones!

But wait.. Both Williams and Page (where the canyon is) are in Arizona O.o
