October 23 1983 Beirut barracks bombing Wikipedia

 

Early on a Sunday morning, October 23, 1983, two truck bombs struck buildings in Beirut, Lebanon, housing American and French service members of the Multinational Force in Lebanon (MNF), a military peacekeeping operation during the Lebanese Civil War. The attack killed 307 people: 241 U.S. and 58 French military personnel, six civilians, and two attackers. Source Wikipedia

Stilt dancers, musicians, and ritual processions came together at the UN Visitors’ Plaza in a new performance piece entitled “Ocean Calling”, to mark World Oceans Day (June 8). The marine-centric work was created by artist Laura Anderson Barbata, in collaboration with choreographer Chris Walker, The Brooklyn Jumbies, choreographer and dancer Mei Yamanaka, and Jarana Beat. The event was organized by the Office of the President of the General Assembly with TBA21–Academy.

The General Assembly holds elections by secret ballot without a plenary meeting. Elections were held for 75th President of the General Assembly; new non-permanent members of the Security Council; and new members of the Economic and Social Council.

 

Mr. Volkan Bozkir from Turkey was elected President of the seventy-fifth session of the United Nations General Assembly. India, Ireland, Mexico and Norway were elected as new non-permanent members of the Security Council for the period of 2021-2023.

The installation features 3,758 backpacks in rows reminiscent of a graveyard, each one representing a loss of a young life to conflict during 2018. The installation is a message to world leaders ahead of the annual United Nations General Assembly and the 30th anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child. Once the installation is taken down, the backpacks will continue on their journey to support children’s education.
