We continuing our journey from Bolaven Plateau to Champasak - Southern Laos near the Cambodian border, some 200 km from Angkor Wat and about a one hour drive from Pakse. There is undoubtedly a growing tourist trail in Laos, but that just means there’s plenty of roads. After all, half the fun of traveling here is in the travel itself – the people you meet, chickens you share seats with, wrong turns you take and lào-láo you drink with the smiling family at the end of the road less traveled. We started in Tad Fane by local bus. Local buses in Laos are a truly unique experience. As a westerner you'll never get the opportunity to pay the local price but the benefit is that you're almost always guaranteed an actual seat. Busses in Laos are packed quite literally to the rafters. People sit 3 to a seat, or if there is no room stand in the aisles or sit on crates of Beer Lao which every local bus seems to have a sideline delivering. Strapped to the roof we have seen ; bags of rice, motorbikes, chickens with their feet cruelly bound and yet more Beer Lao. You can forget about air-con, some buses may have a rusty fan attached to the ceiling, but more often than not all the windows are wedged open, which doubles up as a solution to motion sickness. Basically Laos is not the best place in the world to be if you are impatient or in a hurry. We have had a 50 km journey which took us more than 2.5 hours. Your best bet is to sit back should you have a backrest and enjoy the fabulous scenery and rural life. At Houay Sae we had get out of the bus. Here we had to go on another 30km southward- route 13. Since there were no local buses we had to take the local Tuk Tuk. Well of-course not before we negotiate the right price. To get the right price remember to negotiate with a smile.

Waardoor we eigenlijk Champasak voorbij reden.

Say hello to the Hovertravel hovercraft, your ticket to the fastest (and funniest) ride between the Isle of Wight and Portsmouth!

Caught here at Ryde Hoverport on the Isle of Wight, this Union Jack-wrapped beast skims over sand and sea in just a few minutes, making ferries look like they’re on a leisurely Sunday stroll. It’s not just a trip—it’s a proper hover-adventure, floating above the waves like a giant inflatable unicorn (but with better engines).

Whether you’re a tourist or a local, this unique experience is the quickest way to hop between the two beaches, the most unique air experience without wings.

During my last vacation in Myrtle beach this past august, one afternoon i was out and about with my camera just looking around for some grass to shoot on the beach. As I was standing in front of this grass bush trying to get an artistic shot of the blades.... and as i was finally about to click that perfect focus, the blades suddenly were losing focus... I thought maybe my vintage lens came loose or that I was losing my vision... puzzled, i put the camera down to see what was going on with the grass, and right in front of my face, this older lady was blocking the bush with her derriere staring straight at my face :))) Needless to say, I was speechless and didn't know what to say. She stayed there long enough for me to re-manually focus her ass-set before disappearing from my vision. She had her good laugh and I had my masterpiece LOL... The lady in this image is not her... I am not willing to share that image with you guys unless you're way above 17! she made my day... bless her heart :) What's your unique photo encounter? I'd like to hear some of that.

While we were in Vilnius, we also visited something completely different – the Republic of Uzupis. Known for its artistic and free-spirited atmosphere, Uzupis declared itself an independent republic in 1997 as a playful statement of creativity. It has its own flag, president, and even a quirky constitution. You can even get a passport stamp from Uzupis, but we wisely decided not to, just in case it caused issues when traveling to other countries. During our visit, I took this shot of two people swinging from a bridge over the river, perfectly capturing the whimsical vibe of the area – Vilnius, Lituania

The Asian Small-clawed Otter, also known as Oriental Small-clawed Otter, is the smallest otter species in the world, weighing less that 5 kg. It lives in freshwater, mangrove swamps and wetlands of Bangladesh, Burma, India, southern China, Taiwan, Laos, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam. Due to ongoing habitat loss, pollution and hunting in some areas, the Oriental small-clawed otter is evaluated as vulnerable on the Red List of Threatened Species. They are very active during daytime in remote areas which are free of human disturbance. They are excellent swimmers and can dive under water for about 6 to 8 minutes. They produce small amounts of feces which are well-known as spraint by otter researchers. The spraints are one of important way for communication among the otters. Other otter could indicate the presence of other individual based on the olfactory and visual of the spraints. Generally, they sleep and resting on land either above ground or in the dens. They often sleep in areas with moderate disturbance. Oriental Small-clawed Otters are most social animals. They live in extended family groups of about 12 individuals. They are often seen playing and sliding on muddy banks and in the water in regions where they frequently visit or live. Oriental Small-clawed otter feed mainly on crab and fish. They also feed on insects and small fish such as gouramis and catfish. They supplement their diet with snakes and frogs too. They consume small crabs which are considered as agricultural pests. However, they may uproot plants in the paddy fields. Thus, they benefit as pest population controller for the farmer. River otters have no significant predators except man.

Photo of an Asian Small-clawed otter taken at the Sexet river near the Tad Lo waterfalls. Otter are such speedy swimmers and hard to capture on ccd. When an otter swims underwater it tucks in its front paws. Then it kicks its webbed hind feet which act like swim fins. The otter can zip forward or turn around in a flash. An otter uses special muscles to close its ears and nose under the water. But its eyes stay wide open to see anything that moves. When it sees a fish nearby, the otter chases it. After snatching its prize in its mouth, it drags the fish out and starts eating. It's no problem when the water is a bit murky like the Sexet river cause their whiskers feel the movement of the water when fish swim nearby. Then it's zip-snatch, and the otter has another fishy meal. This single otter is an orphaned otter which made itself at home at our Tad Lo Logde area. She has become my best friend during our stay at the lodge. She followed me and we went swimming together in the Sexet river which was an unique experience for me. Such lovely creature in an incredible natural ambiance. The Tad Lo waterfall and it's beautiful forest is located in the Bolaven Plateau - Laos.

Last year I forgot my Flickr birthday, anniversary or whatever you choose to call it ..

So this year I decided to celebrate what for me has been a wonderful, unique, sometimes frustrating but always fascinating (and somewhat addictive LOL) experience .............a few days early.

My first real public upload was on the 23rd of November, 2006..which is Sunday

I don't even know if I will be here on Sunday but that is another story..

For now, I want to thank all of my Flickr Friends and contacts who have enriched my life, supported my humble efforts at photography, gave me a lot of laughs....made me smile frequently, left me in awe with so much amazing photographic imagery that often takes my breath away.....For those who remind me that Flickr is a lot like life with its ups and downs, its social connections, frustrations, politics, etc. I toast you !

There seems to be something for most people in this virtual world and I have really , truly enjoyed every minute of it.....ok maybe not every minute but mostly..

Because of all of you, I have discovered more about myself, learned that my camera is like a second eye.....and that it rests more than comfortably in my hands

To all of you I have known almost since day one and to those i am just beginning to get to know

Thank you !!

:~)

**A special thanks to Paulina AKA GooseGodesss for the wine glass she gave me and others at a Flickr meet up last April !!

Golden Gai, located in Tokyo's vibrant Shinjuku district, is a fascinating area known for its narrow alleyways, countless small bars, and unique atmosphere. This image captures the essence of Golden Gai, showcasing the array of traditional Japanese lanterns that adorn the entrances of the tiny bars lining the alley. The architectural style is a blend of historical charm and modern vibrancy, with wooden facades and colorful signage adding to the eclectic feel of the area.

Golden Gai's history dates back to the post-war era when it was a black market district. Over time, it transformed into a popular nightlife spot, known for its intimate and quirky bars. Each bar is typically only large enough to accommodate a handful of patrons, creating a cozy and personal environment that attracts both locals and tourists. The area has managed to preserve its historical character while adapting to the modern demands of Tokyo's nightlife scene.

The alleyway's ambiance is further enhanced by the warm glow of the lanterns, which not only light up the narrow streets but also add a nostalgic touch. The signage, often hand-painted, gives each bar a distinct personality and invites visitors to explore the diverse offerings of Golden Gai. Despite its small size, the area is brimming with life and energy, making it a must-visit for anyone looking to experience a different side of Tokyo.

As you wander through the alleys of Golden Gai, you'll encounter a mix of traditional and contemporary elements, from old wooden structures to modern neon signs. This contrast is a testament to Shinjuku's ability to blend the old with the new seamlessly. Whether you're in search of a unique nightlife experience or simply wish to soak in the historical and architectural charm, Golden Gai offers an unforgettable glimpse into Tokyo's vibrant culture.

Several wetland areas in the Netherlands have been selected as potential reintroduction areas for the Otter. Because of it’s good quality and a good connectivity the wetlands in the Northeast of the province Overijssel and the Southwest of the province Fryslan have been selected as primary reintroduction area. The number of otters now surpasses the number of released otters. Reproduction is high, with about 90% of the adult females giving birth every year. Latest news Otters in the Netherlands. The Small-clawed Otter, is the smallest otter species in the world, weighing less that 5 kg. It lives in freshwater, swamps and wetlands. Due to ongoing habitat loss and pollution, the otter is evaluated as vulnerable on the Red List of Threatened Species. Otters are most social animals. They live in extended family groups of about 12 individuals. They are often seen playing and sliding on muddy banks and in the water in regions where they frequently visit or live. Otter feed mainly on frog and fish. They also feed on insects and small fish. They supplement their diet with snakes and frogs too. However, they may uproot plants in the wetlands.

Photo taken at the Natuurpark Lelystad. In this semi-natural woodland you may encounter elks, deer, bisons, Przewalski's horses, storks, otters, and wild swans. Because of the vastness and the numerous trees and wetlands, some animals may not show themselves to visitors. Who walks through the park will not believe what he sees. It is hard to believe that this area came into existence of the making of a highway nearby. There are not that many places in the Netherlands where you will find yourself standing face to face with an otter. The Otter is so hard to shoot. He's moving so fast at 468 mm zoom, ISO80, 1/125s, f/4.4

Foto gemaakt in natuurpark in Flevoland.
