I tried for this shot last weekend but an eastbound never came through. I waited patiently for 90 minutes but eventually it got too dark. So, I went back today and got lucky. I was hoping for an eastbound train while there was enough light in the sky to use the colorful clouds for a backdrop. I hoped. I got :-)
Have a great weekend everyone :-)

A little bit of photoshop fun. The original image was taken at the ghost town of Bosler where this eastbound stack was seen hurtling by.
At sunset on May 4, 2011, East Hump at the sprawling Union Pacific Bailey Yard at North Platte, Nebraska, has a lull between trains. The double crossover and diamond between, are shiny and will see more rolling tonnage soon enough.
A little over an hour of walking later, I found myself back at Snelling Avenue as the UP transfer called East Hump to go back down to St. Paul from East Minneapolis. The second Z of the morning has just pulled through to start some work at the intermodal facility as the transfer opens up the throttle on the 4 EMDs at the top of the hill. Nice running into you here, Andy !

When the Union Pacific E units took an excursion to Bend, Oregon, most of the Portland railfan community I hung around with was along for the chase. Some of the best shots were in the Columbia River Gorge, where the train looked like a very late City of Portland. We found this vantage near Viento Park on the return trip. The spot is about five miles west of Hood River, Oregon.
The "Spirit of the Union Pacific" leads a business train tied up at Union Depot. I would have gotten several more shots but the Highway Patrol came up to my spot noting that this was highly illegal etc. and several people had called 911 to report a dangerous situation. It's a good thing I still can tap dance since after a brief conversation, he just asked me to leave. (Phew)
Thanks to Douglas and Shawn for the heads up.
A pair of GEs shove a westbound-to-eastbound train out of the UP Belt Yard and onto home rails at Westminster for a trip across Wisconsin. There will be no stalling to entertain East Hump on this morning.

A diverse group of Union Pacific locomotives find themselves at the North Yard service pit in Salt Lake City, Utah on July 25, 1978. The group includes a DD35, an E9, a U30C, a TR5 'Cow & Calf', a GP9M, and an SD40. In three years, all but two of them would be retired. Sadly, the E9 would be scrapped.
