This has been the summer of Dun Skippers, tiny and sparkling butterflies that seemed to take over a number of areas I visited. Two hours of driving west of Ottawa to some lovely wilderness, and there they were again.

Based on the location this should be the ‘metacomet’ subspecies. The Skippers are yet another butterfly family with complex identification challenges, and disputes are not uncommon.

For me, this was more about a sunny summer late afternoon, following a half dozen of the creatures from Vetch to Milkweed to Clover. Happy to be corrected if I have this wrong.

The challenges with photographing Skippers, for those who haven’t had the experience, include their wing angles: most butterflies either have wings closed or spread open, offering different unified focal planes. The Skippers have one set of wings open and the other at 45 degrees; people call it a fighter jet position. That seems to defy a side view of vertically closed wings or a view ‘from above’ of the open wings. Oh: and they are tiny and don’t seem to sit still.

This photo is for the Creative Black and White Class. I love to use Lightroom presets for weddings because they give the photos a unified look and are easy to batch edit. You can see that the original photos had a slight colorcast on the dress caused by the foliage (which is actually fairly easy to remove in LR), but since this was a vintage wedding, I wanted a more vintage look for the dress. I used a preset from a group of presets I got somewhere (?) called Bridal Bliss. The preset was 08 Heart. Then I brought it into Photoshop and tweaked it a bit with some adjustments.
