As the sun's gentle warmth caresses the fiddlehead, a silent transformation takes place. Slowly, with patient grace, the tightly wound spiral starts to unfurl, revealing the tender fronds concealed within. Like a dancer in slow motion, the fern extends its slender arms, reaching out to the world.

Thank you so much for your visit!

Ferns captured in a garden up in the hills of Berkeley, California. I have often been attracted to the strange shapes of the unfurling new leaves. However, I find it hard to take photos that do them justice. This is yet another attempt :)

This flower's unfurling is interesting and the opened flower surprised me. You can see the different stages in this photo. I am clueless as to its name. Many thanks, Carol for the Milkweed ID!

Ferns unfurling all over the place...xx

A few weeks ago. Although in a dark spot at the edge of a sunken trackway, this fern was picking up a little of the dawn glow. Focus stack (60 images).

In addition to growing and tending trees with care, my husband makes me laugh. And he grows plants in his partial greenhouse. These are tiny cyclamen that bloom by unfurling their wee petals in an up-swept manner.

Bounced strobe. Thanks for looking. (I left parts of small leaves on the right for context. Should I remove them?)

NB. Taking a Cornell course on bird behavior/behaviour. Less active here now.

Watching Nature unfurl, uncurl and emerge from its Winter hibernation is an annual joy, perhaps all the richer this year. This is a male Orange-tip butterfly (Anthocharis cardamines) concealing the orange tip to its upperwings but showing the delicate tracery of its underwings beautifully as it rests briefly on a fern.
