Unexpected Surprise - While looking for Bobcats this evening, I had this young female kingfisher pose on a beautiful thin branch, in nice light, and with a clear background.

In 15 years of wildlife photography I never had such an opportunity to photograph this species locally. Was a great surprise!

Species: Belted Kingfisher (Megaceryle alcyon)

Location: Santa Clara County, CA, USA

Equipment: Canon EOS R7 + EF 100-400mm IS II + EF 1.4x III Extender

Settings: 1/400s, ISO: 320, f/8 @896mm, Handheld, Electronic Shutter

In a small but inviting alleyway in Palo Alto, CA, lives this little gem - Ettan, serving Cal-Indian cuisine. Immediately fell in love with the rich woods, blue decor, plants, and eclectic lanterns and chandeliers. Love love. If you are ever in the area, pop in. It will not disappoint.

I was thrilled to come across this Short-eared Owl as I was walking in fields above Ulley reservoir in Rotherham at the weekend. It perched on a plastic post for an electric fence and tolerated reasonably close approach before flying off to quarter over the long grass. I was struck by the different size of its two pupils, the left of which was partially shaded and much wider as a result.

This photo is dedicated to Andrea. I admire and adore her work. Her photography is creative and expressive – always with elements of surprise and provoke the senses. Every night I just wait and hope that she will post a new photo for me to enjoy and get inspired.

She’s a wonderful and gorgeous young lady. I'm so lucky to discover another rising star!

Go check her out!

"Unexpected Pleasure"

Normally I find eagles like to hang around bodies of water where they can enjoy a diet of fish. If they can find a chicken or pig farm where they can dine on the recently deceased ones that will work for them as well. This particular one I spotted quite a ways apart from anything other than tall pines.

Amazing what you find in the garden, a mystery where it came from:)

While I was admiring the landscape during a visit to the Gaasbeek castle, an unexpected (but not unwelcome) visitor was passing by. This peacock, not at all shy in its behaviour, belongs to the garden outfit of the chateau.

After catching up with Amtrak 5 at Casa Loma, I followed it down to Gold Run where I was met with a pleasant surprise. A flanger set carrying a reefer was sitting waiting for the westbound Amtrak to cross over. Leading the flanger was UP 583, an oddball among the snow fighting GP38s. While many years ago most were repainted to have a more current version of the UP scheme, plenty also rebuilt, 583 has managed to evade rebuild and keep its SP heritage very known while also still sporting and old variant of the UP scheme. This unit spends a lot of time as the shop switcher in Roseville so seeing it leading up the hill was definitely not on my bucket list that day. Lighting wasn’t exactly great at most spots as eastbound light in the afternoon and evening on Donner can be very unforgiving, so I had limited options. I settled with heading back to Casa Loma where I would set up for a head on shot of it crossing Casa Loma Road. After this I would part ways with the train and head down the mountain.

Our bus travel to Portugal started with accident on highway and more than 2h stop.We missed our bus change in Copenhagen for Paris.

The trip ended with my son drove to get us back home....

We started same travel next day...and we could arrive to Portugal after 3 days...

I stumbled upon a photo shoot and rapidly snapped this image of the dancer warming up while the photographer was just out of frame tinkering with his camera.
