Arizona - Antelope Canyon
Antelope Canyon si trova vicino a Page nel territorio Navajo, appena fuori dalla Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. E' un canyon stretto e chiuso ed è il più visitato.. e fotografato del SudOvest degli Stati Uniti.
Appena si giunge al sito - in un deserto rovente - e si attraversa la stretta fessura che ne costituisce l'ingresso ci si trova immersi in magico mondo di pietra che si scopre ad ogni passo con crescente meraviglia. I colori e le venature della roccia sono intensi sia la mattina che il pomeriggio ma è solo intorno a mezzogiorno, e solo da aprile a settembre, che si può ammirare l'incredibile raggio di luce che penetra attraverso una fessura nel tetto del canyon, creando un effetto magico..
Purtroppo, a causa di un incidente in cui morirono annegati diversi turisti in seguito ad un'improvvisa inondazione, oggi non è più permesso visitarlo per proprio conto ma solo unendosi a un gruppo con una guida locale.

Upon arrival at the Portal way station you are met with the first of many sentries that stand silent but unending watch and guard over all that happens.
I was going to wait to post this until after I got my new computer so I could do some more finishing touches on it like obliterate some of the speckles on the face, was afraid to do anymore fine editing on this given how balky the old computer is. Still I treated it pretty strongly and I just couldn't wait to post it, yes I can be impulsive.
You may notice I am reflected in miniature and distorted in a few places (one is fairly obvious), another aspect I was going to work to obliterate, but alas I couldn't wait.
Computer still on the fritz, but I promise I will be around later today or tonight and catch up with everyone. Hope everyone is doing well!!
Nach gefühlt unendlich vielen dauergrauen Tagen gab es die letzten Tage endlich mal wieder sonniges Wetter. Das musste unbedingt mal ausgenutzt werden! Für eine Allgäutour fehlt mir leider momentan die Zeit, auch wenn ich meine zweite Heimat gerne mal wieder besuchen würde :D
Am vergangenen Donnerstag reichte es wenigstens für eine kleine Tour an die Geislinger Steige, wo ich immerhin endlich mal mein Wunschmotiv mit dem IC 2013 abarbeiten konnte...
Zu meiner Freude bespannte an diesem Tag sogar die Kemptener Starlok 218 446 den besagten Zug und donnerte mit einem absolut traumhaften Sound die Steige hinauf...

Hoping that all my flickr friends are doing well as we close this year and my profound thanks for the visits, inspiration and time taken to create such a lovely human presence on flickr....a truly unique place to find one's self still wanting to come back to. I am constantly amazed at the unending creativity and stewardship that you all put forth visually as you share images of your lives and the natural world around you. I don't use the word "inspire" lightly.

Calakmul (auch Kalakmul) war während der klassischen Periode eine mächtige Stadt der Maya. Zusammen mit El Mirador und Tikal ist Calakmul eine der größten jemals entdeckten Maya-Städte. Calakmul befindet sich rund 300 km südöstlich der Stadt Campeche (Mexiko) im gleichnamigen Bundesstaat.
Calakmul erstreckte sich auf einer Fläche von ca. 30 Quadratkilometern und besaß über 100 Kolossalbauten; es sind insgesamt mehr als 5000 Gebäude bekannt. Dominierend sind hier vor allem die sogenannten „Strukturen“ I und II. Letztere besitzt eine Höhe von ca. 45 Metern. Der Großteil von Calakmul ist jedoch bisher weder ausgegraben noch eingehender erforscht worden. Über die Einwohnerzahlen lassen sich nur Spekulationen anstellen. Für den Stadtkern etwa wird eine Bevölkerung von etwa 50.000 Menschen angenommen.
Calakmul (also Kalakmul) was a powerful Mayan city during the classical period. Along with El Mirador and Tikal, Calakmul is one of the largest Mayan cities ever discovered. Calakmul is located around 300 km southeast of the city of Campeche (Mexico) in the state of the same name.
Calakmul spread over an area of approximately 30 square kilometers and had over 100 colossal buildings; a total of more than 5000 buildings are known. The so-called "structures" I and II dominate here. The latter has a height of approx. 45 meters. However, most of Calakmul has not been excavated or explored in depth. Only speculations can be made about the population. A population of around 50,000 people is assumed for the city center.
There is an unending competition between some of the birds who visit my yard, some come for the food, others want to control access to the food. Over the years control has passed between the species, and at times I have intervened to keep the peace.
Butcher birds, the bird closest to the camera in this shot, moved in at one time and drove away almost every bird who visited my yard. They perched on my roof, and the neighbours' roofs, and mounted a co-ordinated, multipronged attack on any bird who entered. They had all the food for themselves. They even posted a guard on the food dish to make sure no other bird got anything to eat.
When Rainbow Lorikeets came to visit after the fires last year, I put out fruit and seeds for them. Not food Butcher birds eat, so I expected they would co-exist. Not so, the Butcher birds were not happy. The Lorikeets stood up to the Butch birds, and ate the Butcher birds' food as well as their fruit and seeds. Now the Lorikeets rule the roost, any bird can visit, so long as they don't want the fruit and seeds.
And still the competition for yard dominance continues. In this shot the alpha Butcher bird provocatively sits on a chair overlooking the Lorikeets' feed dish. It's an uneasy peace, the Lorikeets have superior numbers, they stand their ground, raise their right feet and thrust their talons towards their adversaries. It's very intimidating and they have the Butcher birds well and truly bluffed.
Meanwhile up to a dozen different species come to feed, if not every day, at least regularly. I keep the peace and make sure that every bird gets something to eat, and it's amazing to see how they negotiate among themselves to share the space and the food.
