"Thierry Geoffroy’s art format EXTRACTEUR is different from the scientific and academic investigation methods. Rather than following the standard categories, the EXTRACTEUR is based on an artistic way of combining the factual and the poetic interpretations of a subject matter. I consider EXTRACTEUR to be a unique way of extending our understanding of data-collection, classification, and analyses."

—Tijana Miskovic, curator

The exhibition is based around “The Jungle” - an EXTRACTEUR art format, created to collect data about prejudice and give them an evolutive artistic form. The format also includes academic studying of the collected data in order to understand the anatomy of prejudice. The information collected during the exhibition period is aesthetically forming part of a monumental sculptural artwork, but can at the same time be considered as valuable data for scientific and academic purposes. This doubleness between aesthetics and analytics is the core idea of all EXTRACTEUR formats, developed to analyze the socio-political context of the world we live in through artists lens. By the end of the 5-year long exhibition period, the collected data will consist of a huge number of detections of xenophobia-signs reported by 50.000 active participants.

Cullman’s Steve James has experienced the excruciatingly crushing, unthinkable loss of a child.

In return, he has given hope, understanding, and voice to so many. His impact on the world through acts of loving kindness are quite extraordinary. As Mother Teresa once said, “Prayer in Action is love, love in action is service.” Steve James and Kenya Relief truly embody this belief and way of being.

When Steve arrived in Kenya, he was completely shocked.

There were people living in dire circumstances without medical care that you and I take for granted. Imagine streets lined with coffins at the height of the HIV crisis, when life expectancy was only 36 years. Think of someone you know in their 30’s. Maybe it’s you. Can you imagine having no hope of living to be wrinkly and gray?

Forty percent of women child-bearing age had HIV, leaving behind many orphans to wander the streets scared, hungry and alone. With the lack of education, birth control methods, and access to medical treatment, the people in this impoverished environment suffered greatly. There were a lot of teachers and middle-aged income-generating people dying. The lack of clean water was also making people sick.

Today, Kenya Relief provides medical treatment and surgery to those in need for FREE, or at a very low cost. They house 175 orphans in Brittney’s Home of Grace (named after Steve and Greta’s daughter) 7 or 8 orphans in vocational training, and 10 orphans in the university. They have a safe, top-notch school that nurtures young minds (570 to be exact) and tests among the top in the area. Kenya Relief has brought clean water to the residents, mobility assistance to people who are so severely disabled that they have to crawl because that is their only means of getting around. They are giving hope to people and they are blessing others because it is who they are and it is the heart of their mission.

How Can You Help?

We’re glad that you asked. You can do a number of things to be helpful:

★ Pray for Kenya Relief

★ Volunteer (learn how at www.KenyaRelief.org)

★ Contribute financially (PayPal)

★ Sponsor a child (this includes food, housing, textbooks, school, clothing, and medical care) Any amount helps.

★ Spread the word – tell their story

Understanding Italy though its mass media.

IPSOS is using biometric belts that have been strapped onto consumers' chests in order to understand human reactions in their truest form. More simply, they are measuring the response to stimuli through the nervous system.

Biometrics is a branch of neuroscience that takes the measurement of emotions to a whole new level. It allows marketers to understand the additional dimensions of unconscious consumer responses in their day-to-day decision making, ultimately leading to stronger end results and a greater understanding of how brands and advertising are connecting with people in their everyday lives.

A clearer understanding of the origin recognition complex (ORC) – a protein complex that directs DNA replication – through its crystal structure offers new insight into fundamental mechanisms of DNA replication initiation. This will also provide insight into how ORC may be compromised in a subset of patients with Meier-Gorlin syndrome, a form of dwarfism in humans. Read more »

I tend to get fascinated with odd things that come across my path in peculiar ways. Or is it peculiar things in odd ways? Anyway... Such was the case here: I found this postcard view of the remarkable public elevator in Oregon City, Oregon, and couldn't resist adding it here for everyone's amazement. Look also at the 1950s "Moderne" replacement that is, apparently, still serving the public interest after another fifty-four years!

Also at the core of this training partnership with the CSUF Social Work Department is not only to help develop good clinicians but to continue to inspire social workers to see themselves as much more than just clinicians. They are change agents that if given the opportunity should want to advocate for the most vulnerable in our community. We are an agency that adheres to evidence-based practices but we also believe in the power of potential and the importance to instill seeds of resiliency in all of our clients.

Mothers are the image of God on this Earth!

Understanding and cherishing the value of this thought, Presidians celebrated Mother’s Day with a deep sense of love, respect and admiration for their Mothers. There is no love as special as that of a mother, and this celebration was in honour of those beautiful souls who have unfailing and pure love in their hearts - MOTHERS.

Presidians celebrated the day by performing on a splendidly choreographed song on Mother’s Day. They made beautiful greeting cards and wrote loving messages for their moms and presented it to them with gratitude. Such celebrations build respect, love and appreciation in children for their loved ones and they recognize the value of a family and relationships.

Understanding the changing media environment and its impact on our society and political climate is complex, requiring analysis from multiple viewpoints.

The second conference on media and communications brought together scholars across fields including political economy, industrial organization, and economic theory to examine critical questions of how the media shapes our lives today.

Surviving cancer and using art as a tool for healing, reflection and understanding has infused my art with a sense of energy and optimism that has a universal appeal. The process of making the art as well as the meaning of it, are both an integral part of the end result and for me there is always a battle to harmonize between the two – to evoke the emotion of the piece and to empower the viewer.

I love combining traditional and new media painting techniques where one feeds off the energy of the other. The visual collaboration of both medias often celebrates a bold expressionism and optimistic edge regardless of subject matter.

My work has evolved from a mashing of referenced pop art and iconic imagery into elaborate multilayered portraits and scenes that depict a more personal interpretation of my life experience, battles and passions. My goal is to lead the observer to dramatic action, putting them on the edge between what we know and what is unknowable. I’ve learned that something new will always come about when you push hard enough and the result is the revelation of a “new identity”.

The motivation for me to keep going is to gain an understanding of how this “new identity or rebirth or truth” actually reflects my life as well as the world we live in – or not.

Presbyter—priest—etymologically means an elderly man. If old age deserves veneration, think how much more you ought to venerate the Priesthood.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

In July 1937, preaching to the small group who were living with him in the Honduran Legation in Madrid, St. Josemaría commented on the gospel of St. Matthew, 8:4. (Jesus said to him, "See that you say nothing to any one; but go, show yourself to the priest, and offer the gift that Moses commanded, for a proof to the people.")

"What respect Jesus shows towards the priest, even though these were priests of the Old Law, servants of a Holy Ark that was only a figure of our Tabernacles! What consideration we have to show the priests of the New Law, who possess the power of changing bread into the very Flesh of Christ! What exquisite understanding we should have towards them, covering their failings and human weaknesses with the cloak of charity!"

[A classic work on this topic is St. John Chrysostom's De sacerdotio (About the Priesthood), which St Josemaría had previously read and meditated on.]

And he wrote in his notes for preaching in Vitoria in August 1938: "Dignity of the priest. Veneration we ought to show him. Noah and his sons: not like Ham, the bad son... [see point 75.] A good task: to pray, to suffer, to make expiation for priests."

Understanding emerges from the fog of confusion through a mysterious process. The great creative minds have a high tollerance for this confusion, shrugging off "convenient" explanations while they wait for the moment of clarity. It is not a big price to pay for, what for humans, may be the closest we come to glimpsing eternity.

Among the many comics, the curators had chosen to bind and place on the double-sided reading table for easy access was Scott McCloud's "Understanding Comics", the comic about comics. Smart choice.
