This event brought together a panel of three leading economists—Thomas Piketty, Kevin Murphy, and Steven Durlauf—to discuss the sources of the rise in inequality in advanced industrialized countries over the past 40 years, the problems it poses, and effective responses. Nobel laureate James Heckman moderated the panel and guided the discussion.

This event was cosponsored by the Becker Friedman Institute, the Harris School of Public Policy, the Human Capital and Economic Opportunity Global Working Group, and the Center for the Economics of Human Development.

and i am twice as old and exponentially wiser,

The Anatomy of Prejudice

5-year-growing-exhibition

on prejudice and xenophobia

"Thierry Geoffroy’s art format EXTRACTEUR is different from the scientific and academic investigation methods. Rather than following the standard categories, the EXTRACTEUR is based on an artistic way of combining the factual and the poetic interpretations of a subject matter. I consider EXTRACTEUR to be a unique way of extending our understanding of data-collection, classification, and analyses."

—Tijana Miskovic, curator

The exhibition is based around “The Jungle” - an EXTRACTEUR art format, created to collect data about prejudice and give them an evolutive artistic form. The format also includes academic studying of the collected data in order to understand the anatomy of prejudice. The information collected during the exhibition period is aesthetically forming part of a monumental sculptural artwork, but can at the same time be considered as valuable data for scientific and academic purposes. This doubleness between aesthetics and analytics is the core idea of all EXTRACTEUR formats, developed to analyze the socio-political context of the world we live in through artists lens. By the end of the 5-year long exhibition period, the collected data will consist of a huge number of detections of xenophobia-signs reported by 50.000 active participants.

Fun with Aperture, Shutter Speed and Metering!

The photo on the left was shot with auto exposure. The entire hallway appears darker than real life because the exposure is compensating for the brightness of the opening ahead.

The photo on the right was shot by metering the area of the wall above the opening, changing the shutter speed until the meter indicated a correct exposure, then recomposing the picture to straight ahead. Because I metered the light reflecting off the walls of the hallway instead of straight ahead toward the opening, the walls of the hallway are better exposed.

Cullman’s Steve James has experienced the excruciatingly crushing, unthinkable loss of a child.

In return, he has given hope, understanding, and voice to so many. His impact on the world through acts of loving kindness are quite extraordinary. As Mother Teresa once said, “Prayer in Action is love, love in action is service.” Steve James and Kenya Relief truly embody this belief and way of being.

When Steve arrived in Kenya, he was completely shocked.

There were people living in dire circumstances without medical care that you and I take for granted. Imagine streets lined with coffins at the height of the HIV crisis, when life expectancy was only 36 years. Think of someone you know in their 30’s. Maybe it’s you. Can you imagine having no hope of living to be wrinkly and gray?

Forty percent of women child-bearing age had HIV, leaving behind many orphans to wander the streets scared, hungry and alone. With the lack of education, birth control methods, and access to medical treatment, the people in this impoverished environment suffered greatly. There were a lot of teachers and middle-aged income-generating people dying. The lack of clean water was also making people sick.

Today, Kenya Relief provides medical treatment and surgery to those in need for FREE, or at a very low cost. They house 175 orphans in Brittney’s Home of Grace (named after Steve and Greta’s daughter) 7 or 8 orphans in vocational training, and 10 orphans in the university. They have a safe, top-notch school that nurtures young minds (570 to be exact) and tests among the top in the area. Kenya Relief has brought clean water to the residents, mobility assistance to people who are so severely disabled that they have to crawl because that is their only means of getting around. They are giving hope to people and they are blessing others because it is who they are and it is the heart of their mission.

How Can You Help?

We’re glad that you asked. You can do a number of things to be helpful:

★ Pray for Kenya Relief

★ Volunteer (learn how at www.KenyaRelief.org)

★ Contribute financially (PayPal)

★ Sponsor a child (this includes food, housing, textbooks, school, clothing, and medical care) Any amount helps.

★ Spread the word – tell their story

We celebrate light in our pictures. Understanding how light interacts with the camera is paramount to the work we do. The temperature, intensity and source of light can wield different photography effect on the same subject or scene; add ISO, aperture and speed, the camera, the lens type, focal length and filters…the combination is varied and multi-layered and if you know how to use them all, you will come to appreciate that all lights are useful, even those surrounded by a lot of darkness.

We are guided by three passions, simple but overwhelmingly strong, our longing to capture in print, that which is beautiful, the constant search for the one picture, and constant barrage of new equipment and style of photography. These passions, like great winds, have blown us across the globe in search of the one and we do understand the one we do look for might be this picture right here for someone else out there.

We want to thank you for your interest in our work and thanks for visiting our work on Flickr, we do appreciate you and the contributions you make in furthering our interest in photography and on social media in general.

Protips For Renting a Roll Off Dumpster in Seward, Alaska.

Having an understanding of how dumpster rentals operate, the different size options and the weight capacities can go a long way to help you get the best for your money. Whether you’re operating a contracting company and need a long term dumpster option, or you’re a do-it-yourself homeowner working on a new project, there’s going to be a dumpster that is the most beneficial choice for your needs. There are always going to be a wide range of dumpster rental companies in Seward, but if you have some background on sizes, weight capacities and possible hidden costs, then you’ll be much better equipped to negotiate with rental businesses companies.

Whenever you’re trying to get rid of waste yourself you’ll need to take a variety of factors into consideration. You’ll want to try and estimate the fuel charges, materials you’re disposing of and any permits you may require to correctly dispose of your trash. Determining the approximate weight of the materials you’ll be disposing of will help you factor in the costs associated with the removal process in Seward.

There are no standardized sizes when it comes to dumpsters, and you could find a wide range from various companies, but the most common sizes come between 10 and 40 cubic yards. Most of the time if you’re just cleaning out a garage or shed you can get away with a 20 cubic yard dumpster. A big job such as home remodeling or roof replacement in Seward will likely need a larger dumpster size such as a 40 cubic yard option. It’s typically better to have more space than less when it comes to dumpster options, since you can find yourself incurring additional charges for going over your weight capacity.

Weight capacities and material restrictions are additional factors you’ll want to consider when selecting a dumpster to rent. It’s not just about the size of your dumpster, as you could have a good amount of room left over yet still go over your weight limit. If you exceed your weight restrictions then you may end up paying more than you anticipated for a rental. Depending on the material you’re disposing of you may have to pay landfill fees as well. In addition to costs, throwing too much weight into your dumpster could also damage your property, so it’s a good idea to be mindfulof your capacity. It’s always better to overestimate your weight rather than underestimate it, so be sure to talk about your job with the dumpster rental company first.

To help determine the best size of the dumpster you will need, think about the types of objects you’re going to be putting in it. If you simply have a few large items, such as a couch or home appliance, then it may be better to choose a junk removal service rather than renting a dumpster. If you are only looking to clean out some old furniture or junk in your garage, you could likely get away with a 10 cubic yard dumpster. You’ll want to check with your rental company in Seward to see if there are objects that they prohibit before you decide to go with a dumpster option. Objects such as mattresses, oil or paint cans, grease or food waste and refrigerators will not be allowed.

Rental rates are effected by a broad variety of factors. Most dumpster service providers give you a no-cost estimate for their services. Obviously, bigger containers can contain far more volume and weight. The cost of dumpster companies transporting and dumping large containers, even if they aren’t entirely full, is going to demand more work. Due to these factors, renting a large dumpster will always be more expensive than a smaller one.

It’s usually best to choose a dumpster company within the local area of Seward. Local businesses will already know the regulations, recycling and disposal procedures associated with local laws, which can save you some effort in the long run. They’ll also have a heads up as to where the ideal places to dispose of waste materials are. Try to provide your rental company with as many details as possible, this will allow them to give you the best cost estimate.
