Every year on the anniversary marking the end of World War II, the Times Square Alliance invites couples (though strangers would be more appropriate) to come make out in the same spot this nameless couple did just 62 years ago.
"Couples of all ages and from all walks of life were invited to meet in front of the sculpture “Unconditional Surrender”, which was created by acclaimed artist Seward Johnson, memorializing a famous photo snapped by Lieutenant Victor Jorgenson and evoking the iconic LIFE magazine cover photo taken by Alfred Eisenstaedt.", reported the Alliance website.
Kissers were handed out a sailor cap, roses and... breath mints!
For more, much better pictures, visit the Times Square Alliance website.
For clues that reveal who might have been the passionate nurse and sailor of the picture, read Sewell Chan's article "When a Kiss Isn’t Just a Kiss" in The New New York Times.

Unconditional Surrender is a series of sculptures by Seward Johnson resembling a photograph by Alfred Eisenstaedt, V–J day in Times Square, but said by Johnson to be based on a similar, less well known, photograph by Victor Jorgensen. The original statue was first installed in Sarasota, Florida, then was moved to San Diego, California and New York City. Copies have been installed in Hamilton, New Jersey; Pearl Harbor, Hawaii; and Normandy, France.

"share the love and show us your heart . . . through pictures share the many things in your life that you love and those people that hold special places in your heart or illustrate this special occasion we call Valentine's Day! It is all about LOVE!"

Unlike their canine housemates I think Cats have put up more conditions for us to meet their requirements for unconditional grants of LOVE. In the case of Rufus he included:
1. only dry food of a special brand. (expensive naturally)
2. Absolutely no bathing.
3. one quarter of the Queen sized bed.
4. scatching behind the ears on demand 24/7
5. No patting on the back
etc etc etc etc
