My friend Rema is there for me through thick and through thin. I am so lucky to have a person in my life who cares about me unconditionally. We have a strong bond that allows us to place trust in one another, that I've felt with few other people in life.
Plus, she's goofy enough to put a wig on and walk into Wal Mart with me during the middle of the day.

This is not my best picture, and not even a new one. It was taken in December 2017 and it shows my first lovebird Bibi (Habibti). When I took the picture, I didn't know that we only had a few more weeks to spend together. Then in January, Bibi left me, she was called to fly beyond the rainbow to be with other heavenly birds and animals.
Bibi's story is a story of building trust from nothing, overcoming fear and unconditional love. When Bibi came to me, she was scared of everything and every one. She was so scared of me that she screamed every time I came into the room where her cage was. However, I had to change the food and water, and so on, so I always tried to move slowly and carefully and talked to her softly, even though it was agonizing to see her fear. I started spending time near her cage every day, for an hour or two, talking, singing and even exercising. :) Over the weeks and months, Bibi finally started to believe that I'm not going to do her any harm. One evening when I was photographing her and when I pressed my face onto her cage, Bibi approached me and started gently exploring my face and my hairline with her little warm beak. That night she also sat on my hand for the first time and I remember how she was trembling. I knew then that patience and those countless hours of spending near her cage were not for nothing and that that little scared creature would come to trust me and I didn't want to do anything to take that away from her. That's how we became the best of friends, and from then on she was always free and she was like an "assistant" almost in all my chores, sleeping in my hand or under the collar of my shirt on my neck.
I then soon realized that my little friend missed me during the day when I was at work. I decided to get her a companion so that she wouldn't have to be alone and so Tauno (her story can be found in my pictures) came to the house. They became good friends, but Bibi maintained her special relationship with me until the end. I can never forget how the little dear bird affected me. She also kindled my love for lovebirds, and you can see what followed in my pictures. :)
As a child and when I was young adult, I had had birds before, but I had never experienced such a relationship with a small bird like with Bibi. Bibi surprised me in every possible way and she will always stay in my heart as a very special character who I deeply miss.
A parent's love is the only kind of love that a child does not have to earn.
From our mother and father, we learn what it means to love unconditionally.

This is a statue of the famous WW II photograph of a sailor kissing a nurse on V-J Day in New York City in 1945. The statue is located in San Diego by the harbor, next to the WW II aircraft carrier USS Midway (in the background). Sadly I heard on the news that the nurse in the original image passed away this week (June 2010).

"Unconditional Surrender" is a 25-foot sculpture that brings to life a famous black and white image of a sailor kissing a young nurse in Times Square, New York City, on August 14, 1945. The image captures the spontaneous eruption of joy and euphoria that swept a war-weary nation when the public announcement was finally made that World War II was over.

I am grateful for the opportunity of a new day and an infinite amount of fresh starts. They deserve the stars.

days ago, i took this picture of my mom holding my daughter, bunny. i took it two days before my mom's birthday and joked that this was the best birthday present i was ever going to get her. bunny had been an independent operator for approximately sixteen hours when this shot was taken.
my mom has given me many many gifts in my life; the knowledge that if i work hard enough at something i will always succeed at it, an overwhelming urge to be generous with whatever good fortune or wealth comes my way, the ability to lose myself entirely and completely in a great book, the blessing of strength..the kind of strength that surprises even yourself, the skill of cleaning a house from top to bottom so thoroughly that counter tops and floor boards sparkle as if seen through some crazy 70's lens filter...starburst i think it's called....anyway....she also taught me about run on sentences but i just refuse to abide by those rules.
my mother has supported me full heartedly in every single endeavor i have ever taken up. she has loved me so fully, so unconditionally, so unwaveringly that it often makes my head spin.
a few days after bunny was born i found myself sitting on her nursery floor, looking at the most beautiful face i had ever seen. i was absolutely terrified. i had never been around kids. i had never held a baby or changed a diaper. it was at that moment that i realized that the best gift my mom had ever given me was her template for how to be a mother.
bunny's birthday is in 19 days. my mom's is in 21 days. i think bunny is still the best gift i'm ever going to be able to give her.
