Korcula Old Town, Croatia

Korcula Old Town is a medieval fortified town whose architecture was mainly influenced by the Venetian Renaissance. The town is designed in a fish bone shape, with a succession of narrow streets branching off the spine of the main street. The fish bone shape design was used to reduce the exposure to harsh northern winds and scorching heat of the sun and thus provide citizens with sheltered and comfortable accommodation.

All streets in the Old Town are made up of steps that run up and down from the main square and the main street. The only street that has no steps is the first street on the eastern side of the town.

The nucleus of Korcula Old Town is part of Croatian national heritage and is protected as a first-class national heritage site.

Korcula Old Town is often referred to as Little Dubrovnik.

Nativity Façade

Tortoise at the base of column

Constructed between 1894 and 1930, the Nativity façade was the first façade to be completed. Dedicated to the birth of Jesus, it is decorated with scenes reminiscent of elements of life. Characteristic of Gaudí's naturalistic style, the sculptures are ornately arranged and decorated with scenes and images from nature, each a symbol in their own manner. For instance, the three porticos are separated by two large columns, and at the base of each lies a turtle or a tortoise (one to represent the land and the other the sea; each are symbols of time as something set in stone and unchangeable). In contrast to the figures of turtles and their symbolism, two chameleons can be found at either side of the façade, and are symbolic of change.

The façade faces the rising sun to the northeast, a symbol for the birth of Christ. It is divided into three porticos, each of which represents a theological virtue (Hope, Faith and Charity). The Tree of Life rises above the door of Jesus in the portico of Charity. Four towers complete the façade and are each dedicated to a Saint (Matthias the Apostle, Saint Barnabas, Jude the Apostle, and Simon the Zealot).

Originally, Gaudí intended for this façade to be polychromed, for each archivolt to be painted with a wide array of colours. He wanted every statue and figure to be painted. In this way the figures of humans would appear as much alive as the figures of plants and animals.

Gaudí chose this façade to embody the structure and decoration of the whole church. He was well aware that he would not finish the church and that he would need to set an artistic and architectural example for others to follow. He also chose for this façade to be the first on which to begin construction and for it to be, in his opinion, the most attractive and accessible to the public. He believed that if he had begun construction with the Passion Façade, one that would be hard and bare (as if made of bones), before the Nativity Façade, people would have withdrawn at the sight of it. Some of the statues were destroyed in 1936,[clarification needed] and subsequently were reconstructed by the sculptor Sotoo.[citation needed]

What once seemed permanent and unchangeable is now just history.

A grey and overcast morning, but the colours on the jumble of rocks made up for the lack of colour in the sky. Particularly the bright green moss and algae. This was the last shot of the day. On of those, "lets turn around and have one more look" shots on the way to breakfast.

There was a time when we thought that the Anglican Church was as unchangeable and as permanent as the English weather, that the red telephone cubicle was part of an identifiable English character, and that the equally red letter box would be eternal.

Two cygnets aren't grey, as is the norm, but white. They are so-called ‘Polish swans’. This is a colour morph that hatches from the egg with white plumage and is therefore also known as ‘immutabilis swan’, as the colour of the plumage does not change in the course of growing up (Latin immutabilis = unchangeable).

Philosophical significance of water - Water is Everything

=

looking at water deals always with a particular aggregation: liquid, gas, solid, or with a particular storage: a pool, lake, sea, or with a particular movement: rain, a river, a wave, a waterfall. What is common to all these phenomena, the chemical composition of water, H2O, is not visible but under the microscope. Water is such a unique substance that philosophy begins with seeing water. Thales, the first philosopher (The inventor of philosophy!) who lived in the seventh century BC, believed that everything is water, and subsequent philosophers explained, each according to his method, what Thales meant. We know that Thales did not know the chemical composition of the water, and did not see it under the microscope, so naturally we ask how he had come across the hidden entity behind its multiple expressions? The answer is that we don't need to have a microscope to see that water freeze in cold but return to flow after they defrost and that vapors turn into water in the rain.

Note: It is not that Thales declared that every thing is water and returned to plow his land. I think he dedicated his life to the development of this statement and to prove his case. His enterprise was admired in his lifetime. His teachings were well known for several generations after his death. As time went by it was forgotten until all that's left is this statement and some anecdotes. Nowadays there is a tendency to underestimate the achievements of Thales, but in order to understand in depth his statement we need to reconstruct his enterprise - to prove that every thing is water from accumulated knowledge on water ever since.

Thales's famous statement that everything is water first appears in Aristotle's Metaphysics 983 b6 8-11. In a short paragraph he explains that early philosophers searched one principle, fixed, unchanging, which is the source of the existence of all things, and he writes in the following paragraph:

Thales, the founder of this type of philosophy, says the principle [of unchangeable substratum] is water (for which reason he declared that the earth rests on water), getting the notion perhaps from seeing that the nutriment of all things is moist, and that heat itself is generated from the moist and kept alive by it (and that from which they come to be is a principle of all things). He got his notion from this fact, and from the fact that the seeds of all things have a moist nature, and that water is the origin of the nature of moist things.

Heraclitus Homericus commented that Thales drew his conclusion from seeing moist substance turn into air, slime and earth.

The statement - everything is water - in what cases is it correct? Was Thales right?

About two-thirds of Earth's surface is covered by water, and, as Aristotle explained above, animals and plants that live in the water originated from seeds which are damp and humidity originates in water.

What is left to check is third of Earth's surface exluding plants and animals.

In this third are materials that do not look like water but we know they are water: sorts of ice (including snow), sorts of vapor including clouds.

The Teatro Olimpico in Vicenza

UNESCO World Heritage Site and marvel: The Teatro Olimpico in Vicenza.

The Teatro Olimpico in Vicenza in northeastern Italy is definitely worth a visit! It is the first free-standing theater building in Europe since ancient times and the oldest covered theater in the world.

It was built by the architect Andrea Palladio between 1580 and 1585 in the style of a Roman theater and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Theater and music productions take place in the Teatro Olimpico.

The members of the Olympic Academy of Vicenza, of which Palladio was a member, were particularly interested in the stage arts and commissioned him to build a theater hall.

The stage architecture was designed by his student Vincenzo Scamozzi after his sudden death.

At the opening in 1585, the play "King Oedipus" by Sophocles was performed. Palladio did not live to see it.

The Teatro Olimpico was initially a great success, but operations were stopped during the Counter-Reformation. From the middle of the 19th century, occasional performances were held again, but it was not until the post-war period that the theater regained its former fame.

The Teatro Olimpico can also be visited independently of the performances.

Palladio modified the ancient specifications that he had studied in detail in Rome. The auditorium is a semi-oval with 14 ascending rows of seats, which are closed off by a colonnade. The stage wall offers a view of a palace, a city that is supposed to represent Thebes.

Since the houses are smaller towards the back and the stage floor rises towards the back, the scene appears much deeper - a perspective stage.

The stage design is unchangeable.

Goethe was also impressed by Palladio's architecture at the beginning of his trip to Italy in 1786.

The Teatro Olimpico is now only allowed to accommodate 400 spectators (it used to be allowed to accommodate 800 spectators). Depending on the performance, the concert pit is also set up for theatergoers.

The series of events begins in spring with classical music concerts and evenings as part of the Vicenza Jazz Festival.

Classical plays are then performed in autumn. Since the theater cannot be heated or air-conditioned, performances are not possible in summer or winter.

In 1986, director Jean-Pierre Ponnelle filmed the opera "Mitridate, re di Ponto" by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in the Teatro Olimpico.

Al Roker, an American producer and actor, released the documentary "Empire of the Eye: The Magic of Illusion" in 2003, in which he describes the spectacular illusions that Palladio created behind the scenes of the Teatro Olimpico.
