According to Greek mythology Medusa symbolizes female wisdom. Her wide unblinking eyes reflect her immense wisdom. They are all knowing, all seeing eyes that see through us, penetrating our illusions and looking into the abyss of truth.

Medusa also represents the Cycles of Nature as life, death and rebirth. She is universal Creativity and Destruction in eternal transformation.

Her mask was used to guard and protect women and the secret knowledge of the Divine Feminine. It literally warned men to "Keep Away! Female Mysteries." The serpent is a totem of the cycles of life, death and rebirth and the seasons. It is the connection to the fertile earth and to the underworld. It also symbolizes immortality as it was thought to shed its skin indefinitely. (A. La Van)

Cathedrals of Cultures by Wim Wenders, Michael Glawogger, Michael Madsen, Robert Redford, Margreth Olin, Karim Aionouz

Cathedrals of Culture offers six startling responses to this question. This 3D film project about the soul of buildings allows six iconic and very different buildings to speak for themselves, examining human life from the unblinking perspective of a man-made structure. Six acclaimed filmmakers bring their own visual style and artistic approach to the project. Buildings, they show us, are material manifestations of human thought and action: the Berlin Philharmonic – an icon of modernity, the National Library of Russia – a kingdom of thoughts, Halden Prison – the world’s most humane prison, the Salk Institute – an institute for breakthrough science, the Oslo Opera House – a futuristic symbiosis of art and life and the Centre Pompidou – a modern culture machine. Cathedrals of Culture explores how each of these landmarks reflects our culture and guards our collective memory.

One of the most striking archaeological treasures uncovered during the 1986 excavation was the gold burial mask of the Princess of Chen, which was found covering her face. The mask is made from a sheet of gold and is thin and delicate, around half the thickness of a one penny coin. Following Liao tradition, the flesh-and-blood features of the seventeen-year-old are engraved on the mask, including her ears - an unusual addition. This personalised burial mask offers a unique and privileged opportunity to encounter the face of an eleventh-century Liao princess. It is not a stylised painting or modern reproduction, but a three-dimensional, life-sized image crafted by a person who looked upon her true face one thousand years ago, as we are looking upon her mask today. Her expression is one of strength and serenity however looking into her unblinking eyes, a child-like fragility is somehow communicated.

Dec 26th---360/365----A Leaf From The Bodhi Tree

--------------this leaf was a special memento that we picked up in India along our travels --it was tucked in a book for 5 months as we missioned across Asia -this is a leaf from the Bodhi tree that Buddha sat under over 2500 years ago and became enlightened -------According to Buddhist texts after his Enlightenment, the Buddha spent a week in front of the tree standing there with unblinking eyes, gazing at it with gratitude.--The Bodhi tree is also known a Sacred Fig tree and it takes 100 to 3,000 years for a bodhi tree to fully grow--it really is an amazing tree and the way the branches shoot out everywhere and the leaves are said to be Heart-shaped, with a point at the apex and a notch at the base.---------from all my travels this is one of the souvenirs that reminds me most of all the Buddhism that we experienced on the trip and meeting monks along the way ---even months later we spent many days at a temple with a monk that taught us so many things --his name was Khumsuc--its those moments that i keep near in my thoughts -it just ties in all those details for me -

--------this is a bodhi leaf from the bodhi tree in India

Last night I found myself lost in a dream where I was wandering through a lost world in darkness where the stars and galaxies were covered by an unending sea of clouds. I closed my eyes, the darkness succumbing my lost soul and as I drifted away, deep in thought, I heard the grasses move behind me. I opened my eyes fast and wide and turned around, pushing my hair from my eyes; and a man came forward, holding a brilliant golden candle in his frail, brittle fingers. He looked into my eyes and I saw something strange, something that made even my skin cringe as he smiled at me. I looked at him, his wrinkled face, yet strong gaze kept my eyes wide and unblinking.

Are you lost, dear?

The man’s words seemed to drift into my weary heart and I looked at him curiously, captured by his hopeful tone and eerily comforting posture. I nodded wearily and stepped forward so that I could hear him more clearly.

I can give you all of the riches you’ve ever desired. I can give you everything.

I woke up in a satin bed and saw a photograph of a man I’ve never met and as my eyes focused on the room..I saw that diamonds scattered the floor, piling high at the foot of my bed. I lifted my head from the golden satin pillow and looked around the room in awe. The man came and stood at the bedroom door and smiled at me. I frowned when he came to the bedside and placed his hand on my face, turning it towards his. His eyes were a piercing golden hue and my eyes grew wide and I stood up, climbing out of his reach. He looked at me strangely and silently, and I backed out of the room, the golden sun rushing in through the satin curtains.

I looked out the windows and saw amethyst mountains, golden skies, and emerald fields. Everything shined and sparkled as if it were carved from porcelain and fine china. I gasped as I turned to look at the room - the ornate decor was covered in a shiny gold texture, everything I had ever dreamed in fantasies....

But it was cold.

I ran towards the mirror, the train of my red satin garments trailing behind me; I looked into the mirror, the reflection of a young, prosperous girl looked back at me. I looked closely and saw it. The shining gold in my eyes, as if they had been washed over with a gold paint in my sleep. I closed my eyes tight.

I don’t want this.

I couldn’t think. I was lost. I just wanted things back the way they were. The realization struck me that a heart that's made of gold could never really beat at all. And I began to feel the overwhelming feeling of regret. I would do anything to be back where I had been before....

Anything.

And I stumbled back to the bedroom, sobs coming from inside as I stared at the man I’ve never met. He came towards me in his flawless perfection and reached out to me. I turned away, and sobbed even harder. I closed my eyes tight. I closed them tighter than I ever had in my life, willing myself back to where I had been.

And as every emotion inside began to well up, I opened my eyes. The light of the moon shined in through the window and I began to breathe again. I sighed heavily, feeling the warm blankets around me. I took in a swift breath of air, my face still wet with tears and I could feel my heart beat more steadily as the dream drifted into memory.

As the morning light came in through the curtains, I got up out of bed, stood in front of the mirror and looked into the reflection of my eyes. No gold. I closed them and smiled, feeling and overwhelming sense of joy.

FROM UFFINGTON TO THE SOURCE: 43

The water runs cold, dark and deep here. I once wrote a song with that rather cliched phrase in the chorus. I am singing it for the next few hundred yards:

The Kelpie

Chorus:

The rushes swaying by the river,

The water rippling in the breeze,

Scattering the wan reflections

Of the gaunt and budless trees.

“Take me, mother, to the river,

Where it runs cold, dark and deep,

To seek the soul of my dear brother

Where his body lies in sleep.”

Autumn pale was ending, a chill was in the air,

His mother sternly told him, “My little boy beware!

Never wander by the river, my dear darling child!”

Yet he wandered ever onward, deep into the wild.

Turgid was the water, dim and dark with peat,

Black was the mud that clung to his wee feet.

Dismal was the day, the rushes dripped with dew,

And dire were the auguries, if only Mother knew.

Chorus

A horse stood in the river, silent as the night,

And up tripped the little lad, joyful at the sight.

Darksome, motionless the mare, hair soaked by the rain,

And like the feathers of a raven hung the dripping mane.

He touched it on the muzzle, the eyelids open wide;

He reached to put his little hand upon its clammy side.

He grasped it by the fetlock, he tugged it by the tail,

Yet still the horse unblinking stood amid the evening pale.

Chorus

The boy stood up to his knees amid the stagnant mud;

The horse turned round to look at him with eyes as red as blood.

“Mummy warned me not to do it. Mummy said beware!”

Yet still he climbed upon its back and grasped its lanky hair.

He cried and trembled as the horse let out a lowly groan

And where the eyebrows should have been he saw a ridge of bone.

The boy let out a sharp shrill scream that echoed in the gloom;

The Kelpie sunk into the depths and dragged him to his doom.

Chorus

Autumn pale was ending, a chill was in the air,

“Don’t go where your poor brother went, I tell you girl, beware!

Never wander by the river, my dear darling child!”

Yet she wandered ever onward, deep into the wild.

Here's another one of the friend I made in Mexico. Don't tell him I said so, but something about reptiles kinda creeps me out. They're just so primordial looking and you know that that reptilian brain's only thought is how he's going to eat you.

Naw, this guy seemed more interested in eating leaves and the biggest danger was standing below him when he decided it was bathroom time. But still, just look at that unblinking eye! I just know he's thinking "lunch" as he stares back at me.

"What!?" I shouted at the unblinking eye, "I have nothing left to give! You've taken everything!" It continued to remain motionless. The plain walls of my prison pushed in on my brain, as the faceless captor looked down on me.

"I've nothing...."

After a dramatic entrance, Hahn Bin launched into a variety of solos and a piano accompanied waltz.

Nothing was rushed in Hahn Bin’s musical sets. Dramatic pauses, unblinking stares into the sky, with a focus on posturing and outfit changes between songs made the violin performance a fun avant-garde show to witness.

UNBLINKING

Graffiti art, Manchester

Here In the City of White Bear Lake, Minnesota, our local pride often takes the form of cement lawn statuary. The problem with 400 pounds of concrete is that it is stationary, unmoving, unfeeling. Painted eyes staring, unblinking forever. But we do our best to add seasonal cheer. Here is our bear, "Walter Windchill" dressed for Thanksgiving.

i walked the beach yesterday after an afternoon swim and had a look at what the incoming tide was depositing on the shore...

this tiny little see-through fishy thingy was lying next to one of the blue bottles...i thought it was a bit of shoe lace, but when i touched it we both jumped...its own twitching revealing this striking blue eye, which, through the macro lens looked up at me with a pleading helplessness...i put him back in the water, but i found the eye haunts me somewhat...didn't quite get the focus right, zoning in on the grains of sand just behind its unblinking blue iris...

Ever since its launch in 1990, NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope has been an interplanetary weather observer for keeping an eye on the largely gaseous outer planets, which all have ever-changing atmospheres. NASA spacecraft missions to the outer planets have given us a close-up look at these atmospheres, but Hubble’s sharpness and sensitivity keeps an unblinking eye on an ever-changing kaleidoscope of complex activities long after those missions have ended. Inaugurated in 2014, the telescope’s Outer Planet Atmospheres Legacy (OPAL) Program has been providing us with yearly views of the giant planets.

Planetary oddball Uranus rolls on its side around the Sun as it follows an 84-year orbit, rather than spinning in a more-vertical position as Earth does. Uranus has a weirdly tipped “horizontal” rotation axis angled just eight degrees off the plane of the planet’s orbit. A recent idea is that Uranus once had a massive moon that gravitationally destabilized it and then crashed into it. Other possibilities include giant impacts during planetary formation, or even giant planets exerting resonant torques on each other over time. The consequences of the planet’s tilt are that for stretches of time lasting up to 42 years, parts of one hemisphere are completely without sunlight. When the Voyager spacecraft visited during the 1980s the planet’s south pole was pointed almost directly at the Sun. Hubble’s latest view shows the northern pole now tipping toward the Sun.

[left]

This is a Hubble view of Uranus taken in 2014, seven years after northern spring equinox when the Sun was shining directly over the planet’s equator, and shows one of the first images from the OPAL program. Multiple storms with methane ice-crystal clouds appear at mid-northern latitudes above the planet’s cyan-tinted lower atmosphere. Hubble photographed the ring system edge-on in 2007, but the rings are seen at an oblique angle seven years later in this view. At this time, the planet had multiple small storms and even some faint cloud bands.

[right]

As seen in 2022, Uranus’ north pole is now capped by low methane humidity and a thickening photochemical haze that looks similar to the smog over cities. Several little storms can be seen near the edge of the polar haze boundary. Hubble has been tracking the size and brightness of the north polar cap and it continues to get brighter year after year. Astronomers are disentangling multiple effects—from atmospheric circulation, particle properties, and chemical processes—that control how the atmospheric polar cap changes with the seasons. At the Uranian equinox in 2007, neither pole was particularly bright. As northern summer solstice approaches in 2028 the cap may grow brighter still, and will be aimed directly toward Earth, allowing good views of the rings and north pole; the ring system will then appear face-on. This photo was taken on November 10, 2022.
