In this immersive installation by Swiss artist Ugo Rondinone you step into a brilliantly coloured dreamscape populated by 45 lifelike human sculptures in full clown costume. Usually clowns are happy, energetic and entertaining, but here they are the opposite - captured in a moment of calm before or after the show.

Ugo Rondinone - Vocabulary of Solitude

You can explore the magical world of Ugo Rondinone in Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen till May 29.

Something strange happens when you look at Rondinone’s art. He gives everyday motifs and images a poetic dimension by isolating or enlarging them. On the floor of the 1500m2 Bodon Galleries visitors will move between life-size clown figures. With titles in the present tense, such as be, breathe, remember, feel and yawn, the clowns in the exhibition represent a 24-hour day in the life of an individual.

Ugo Rondinone (*1964) is a Swiss-born artist widely recognized for his mastery of different media, most prominently sculpture, drawing and painting, but also photography, architecture, video and sound installation.

Large art installation by Swiss artist Ugo Rondinone, Seven Magic Mountains was just unveiled in May and can be found 10 miles south of Las Vegas. The bright fluorescent-colored towers made of limestone boulders measure 30-feet tall and stand smack dab pretty much in the middle of nowhere in the desert within the Ivanpah Valley.

Ugo Rondinone’s art located just south of Las Vegas near Jean, Nevada. I shot this using a 35mm Nikon F100 and the Nikkor 20mm f1.8 G. I used Kodak Ektar 100 film that I developed at home using the Arista C-41 kit. This was roll number 12 from this batch of chemicals which is 1.5 x stated useful life. The chemicals are stored in a refrigerator and I rinse throughly between stages. I am increasing development times between each roll. I want to see if I can get 30 rolls from the kit. When the 'Seven Magic Mountains' artwork was first installed in 2016, the plan was that it should be removed after two years. However it has proved so popular that the Bureau of Land Management has extended its permit to the end of 2021.

Lower left is Winter Moon, the top of a cast of a thousand year old olive tree by Swiss artist Ugo Rondinone. The cast is made of aluminium and coated in white enamel, taken from olive trees still standing in Puglia and Basilicata. The installation pays homage to the original land of Rondinone’s family which emigrated to Switzerland from Matera.
