Die Zeche Consolidation, meist kurz Zeche Consol genannt, war der wirtschaftliche Motor der Stadt Gelsenkirchen. Bereits in den 1870er Jahren zählte die Zeche Consolidation zu den förderstärksten im Ruhrgebiet. In kurzer Folge wurde ein Schacht nach dem anderen abgeteuft. In 130 Jahren wurden über drei Millionen Tonnen Kohle gefördert.

Schacht 9 wurde 1915 begonnen, die Förderung begann aufgrund des Ersten Weltkriegs jedoch erst nach 1918. 1922 wurde das Fördergerüst als zweigeschossiges Doppelstrebegerüst noch in Fachwerkbauweise erbaut. Da sich zeitgleich die Vollwandbauweise durchsetzte war es das letzte seiner Art und ist heute eines der wenigen noch existierenden. Zeitgleich wurde das südliche Maschinenhaus vom Zechenbaumeister Heinrich von Bonin (1871-1927) erbaut. Die Besonderheit im Maschinenhaus ist die Zwillings-Dampffördermaschine von 1963, die letzte Dampfmaschine, die von der Gutenhoffnungshütte (GHH) in Oberhausen gefertigt wurde. Das nördliche Maschinenhaus wurde 1937 als kubisch gestalteter Ziegelbau von Dr. Ing. Hans Väth (1897–1950) erbaut. 1938 wurde dort eine Zwillings-Dampffördermaschine aus der Gutenhoffnungshütte installiert.

Auf der Zeche Consol wurden nach ihrer Stillegung und Renovierung vier Kulturprojekte gestartet. Eines ist die Kunstinstallation im nördlichen Maschinenhaus von Werner Thiel (1927-2003). Die anderen sind das Consol Theater, das Musikprobenzentrum Consol 4 sowie das südliche Maschinenhaus mit der Bergbausammlung des IBC.

Die Bergbausammlung des IBC besitzt als zentrales Ausstellungsstück die Zwillings-Dampffördermaschine. Sie hat eine Leistung von 4.100 PS und ein Gewicht von 285 Tonnen. Die Fördermaschine hob Nutzlasten von circa 12t mit 18m/s (65km/h) aus dem über 1.000 Meter tiefen Schacht. Jeden ersten Sonntag im Monat wird sie live vorgeführt.

The Conso colliery, usually called consol, was the economic engine of the city of Gelsenkirchen. As early as the 1870s, the Consolidation colliery was one of the strongest in the Ruhr area. In a short sequence, one shaft after another was demolished. Over three million tonnes of coal have been mined in 130 years.

Shaft 9 was started in 1915, but due to the First World War, production did not begin until after 1918. In 1922, the conveyor structure was still built in half-timbered construction as a two-storey double strut. Since the full-wall construction was prevailing at the same time, it was the last of its kind and is today one of the few still existing. At the same time, the southern machine house was built by the colliery builder Heinrich von Bonin (1871-1927). The special feature of the machine house is the twin steam conveyor from 1963, the last steam engine manufactured by the Gutenhoffnungshütte (GHH) in Oberhausen. The northern machine house was built in 1937 as a cubic brick building by Dr. Ing. Hans Väth (1897-1950). In 1938, a twin steam conveyor from the Gutenhoffnungshütte was installed there.

Four cultural projects were launched at the Consol colliery after its closure and renovation. One is the art installation in Werner Thiel's northern machine house (1927-2003). The others are the Consol Theater, the Music Rehearsal Centre Consol 4 and the Southern Machine House with the Mining Collection of the IBC.

The IBC mining collection has the twin steam conveyor as a central exhibit. It has an output of 4,100 hp and a weight of 285 tons. The conveyor lifted payloads of about 12t at 18m/s (65km/h) from the shaft, which is over 1,000 metres deep. Every first Sunday of the month it is performed live.

Rund 450.000 Besucher seither erkunden jedes Jahr den großzügig gestalteten Park, der ein wahres Spielparadies für Kinder ist. Die Spaziergänge des Parks führen vorbei an bunten Gärten, einem auf natürliche Weise entstandenen Teich- und Sumpfgebiet sowie an dem größten tropischen Schmetterlingsgarten Nordrhein-Westfalens. Hier können über 200 farbenfrohe Schmetterlinge betrachtet werden. Jedes Jahr finden zahlreiche Veranstaltungen wie Konzerte, Kabarettabende, Kindertheater, Messen, Märkte und Feste auf dem Gelände statt.

From the former "Maximilian" colliery, the Maximilianpark was created in 1984 as part of the first state horticultural show. Since then, around 450,000 visitors have been exploring the spacious park every year, which is a real play paradise for children. The walks in the park lead past colorful gardens, a naturally created pond and swamp area and the largest tropical butterfly garden in North Rhine-Westphalia. Over 200 colorful butterflies can be seen here. Every year numerous events such as concerts, cabaret evenings, children's theater, trade fairs, markets and festivals take place on the site.
