Peace Bridge

Designed by Santiago Calatrava

The bridge was built by The City of Calgary to connect the southern Bow River pathway and Downtown Calgary with the northern Bow River pathway and the community of Sunnyside. This connection was designed to accommodate the increasing number of people commuting to and from work and those utilizing Calgary's pathways.

I was fascinated by the Peace Bridge and because my hotel was right behind the Shaw building I could go there anytime I wanted...:-))

Two previous pics in the first comment..

Exposure, is there a right one? I often utilize my histograms and the theory of ETTR. (Expose To The Right) However, that does not always render the most ideal image, even when manipulated in post. This shot was slightly underexposed and shot in RAW. The result better reveals the suns rays than the one with the right histogram. Perhaps it is best to keep on learning,

If you ever travel to the Sunshine Coast of British Columbia, one of the many attractions available to you is Kayaking. In this case we went out with a group utilizing double Kayaks and toured about from 6pm to 10pm. And yes, that meant the potential for wild life viewing on the ocean, a colored sunset, and Kayaking in the dark. We were treated to all that and more. In addition, the water was almost dead calm. I joked with the others that we were the one's making waves as we travelled along at about 4M/H.

In this shot, we arrived at one of the many islands along the way staying more in an inlet than actually travelling out along the ocean. A shot I otherwise could never have, this one is from our Kayak as we peacefully floated enjoying the quiet, stillness, and the pleasures of nature. And, if you look very closely into the shot, you will notice a tug boat just off the shores of the lighthouse. We watched as both it and the log boom it was towing made its slow, inexorable way down the channel.

As the heavens prepare for an imminent downpour, nature paints a breathtaking scene in the mountains of Tuscany.

Italy experiences a period of intense rainfall as dark clouds dominate the sky. The relentless downpour transforms the landscape, turning streets into temporary rivers and fields into saturated patches of earth. People navigate through the rain, seeking shelter and utilizing umbrellas and raincoats to stay dry. The heavy rainfall showcases the power and unpredictability of nature, reminding us of our vulnerability in the face of natural forces.

A Sunday stroll past flocks of sheep.

In comparison to other German states, Baden-Württemberg, along with Hesse, Bavaria, and Schleswig-Holstein, stands out as a focal area for sheep and goat farming. In Schleswig-Holstein, sheep are primarily kept on dykes to maintain a short turf and compact the soil with their hooves. In contrast, Baden-Württemberg predominantly utilizes extensive sheep breeds in migratory shepherding for landscape management. The sheep herds migrate to different grazing areas according to the vegetative season: in the summer, for instance, they graze on the orchard meadows and the sparse, dry grasslands of the Swabian Jura. Without the sheep, juniper heaths, sparse and dry grasslands, and sloping terrains would risk becoming overgrown with shrubs and trees. However, across Baden-Württemberg and the entire country, sedentary sheep farming prevails.

This is an image of Westlake Park, located in the city center of Seattle. During this time of year, the park features illuminated trees and constructed, life-size Christmas presents, ornaments, and trees through which people can walk! Apparently, over 80,000 light bulbs are utilized to light up the park!

The title of the image is a parody of the popular Christmas carol, "A Holly Jolly Christmas", because, as you can see, almost everyone in the image is practicing some form of social distancing. Whether this was a coincidence or not, it was intriguing to observe.

Due to the pandemic, the holiday mood and spirit are very much subdued this year compared to previous seasons -- as is probably the same case in cities and towns around the world.

Nevertheless, it was heartwarming to see many parts of the downtown neighborhood here in Seattle sparkling and glistening in spite of our circumstances.

My latest blog article features several festive images of Seattle during the holiday season this year: "Happy Holly Jolly Holidays!"

Wishing all of you a Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Happy Kwanzaa, Happy Festivus, and a healthy, safe, peaceful, and restful holiday season!

Roll on 2021!

Utilizing a trackage rights agreement established in 1985, a Union Pacific Sharp, Utah - Valmy, Nevada coal train exits the Provo Sub and enters Rio Grande's eastward main track at Lakota Junction on a snowless Dec. 8, 1990 afternoon in rural Utah County.

Because of the safety measures implemented during Covid-19, there is a reduced collection of downtown Springfield, Mo regulars. Some, such as these couple of skate boarders, utilize the ghost town as a surrogate for their otherwise closed usual hang-outs.

I appreciate Dominic and his friend for inviting me to shoot them during their trick boarding session.

Not utilized for decades in passenger service, the Holly Depot has set unused and somewhat forlorn for years between the former GTW (now CN) Holly Sub and the former Pere Marquette (now Lake State) Saginaw Sub in the heart of town. After striking a sneaky deal with the village of Holly, the depot was sold to the village with the stipulation that it be moved off of railroad property. That move will happen this summer or fall, making scenes like this one no longer possible. Coming north into the fast falling sun, X251 comes into a hole in the shadows as they pass the depot heading north with a solid train of loaded racks for the IHB at Gibson.

Try to utilize playing the different layers of single color as a metaphor of faded love, when love was away, one's heart would be lost , just like the flowers faded out , the color faded away.

Utilizing SD40-2 No. 6383 as a shoving platform, Wheeling & Lake Erie's train No. 617 slowly backs empty coke cars down the Matt Branch at Speers, PA on Sept. 18, 2021. At the coke plant at Monessen, the empties will be exchanged for loads.

A grey heron perched on a branch near the water's edge. Tall reeds and branches frame the foreground, while the water and a rocky, arid background provide contrast. The bird appears to be either a Grey Heron or a Great Blue Heron, which are very similar species.

Herons often stand motionless as they scan for prey or wade with deliberate steps. This title highlights their hunting technique.

The image utilizes natural framing with the dense vegetation on the left and bottom guiding the viewer's eye towards the heron and the open water. The heron is positioned off-center, adhering roughly to the rule of thirds.

The scene appears to be well-lit, likely under bright daylight, creating strong highlights on the water and the rocky terrain in the background. The lighting highlights the textures of the reeds, the water ripples, and the bird's feathers.

The colors are vibrant, featuring deep greens from the reeds, blues from the water, and earthy browns/tans from the rocks and dry vegetation. The heron's grey-blue plumage stands out against the background.

The photograph evokes a serene, natural atmosphere, capturing a quiet moment of wildlife in its habitat. The bird's still posture and focus on the water give the impression of a watchman guarding the riverbank.

The afternoon edition of Montana Rail Link's twice-daily Gas Local winds along the south bank of the Flathead River on MRL's scenic but sparsely utilized 10th Subdivision between Perma and Paradise, MT. The fuel carried by this move bridges the missing link of the Yellowstone Pipeline, an operation rendered necessary by the Salish and Kootenai tribes' refusal to resign land lease agreements with the pipeline owners after several spills occurred in the mid-1990s. MRL's services are needed between Missoula and Thompson Falls, MT, over protected land where the pipeline is not permitted.

A significant place utilized by the Snuneymuxw people for thousands of years and traditionally known as Saysutshun, Newcastle Island is a wondrous escape from the bustling urban center of Nanaimo just across the harbour.

Alongside the strong First Nations presence and culture on the island, it is also home to many rich histories which include coal mining, a sandstone quarry, and herring salteries, all of which make Newcastle Island a must-see eco-tourism destination for those visiting Nanaimo.

Storm clouds break over the Broadacres Farm near C

Carnation, WA. This historic dairy farm is on the National Register of Historic Places

Six years after they were married, William and Estella Adair bought 110 acres in the Snoqualmie Valley next door to her parents place near the community of Vincent which lies northwest of the current town of Carnation in Kings County Washington. In the early years flood and shifting river channels caused them to abandoned there home and establish a new place on their property to the south. In 1915 they built a farmhouse in the Craftsman style. William set about replacing his temporary structures with more permeant ones. In 1922, Will Adair constructed a hay bam using the new bow-truss roof configuration. He was among the first Snoqualmie Valley dairymen to build such a bam which was designed to maximize the interior volume of the hay loft. Other farmers quickly followed Adair's example and today many barns in the Snoqualmie Valley utilized this design. High on the barn's north end, in bold black letters below the hay door ,were painted the words “Broadacre Farm-1922” This is the first time this name for the farm appears in public Will Adair milked his 55 cows by hand until he retired in 1945.

In the photo the building in front of the barn is the Milkhouse and Milking Parlor. It was built in the late 1940s after peter Sinnenas bought the farm. This complex of four adjoining buildings were altered by Peter’s son Ed over time as milking technology and size of herds changed. The milking parlor was one of the first in valley, and the additions date from the 1970s to 1990s. The complex is attached to and functionally integrated with the 1922 hay bam.

Not shying away from my New topographics I adhere to the tenets Henry Wessel incorporated into his works; "allow the light of the scene to present itself naturally and be generous with the shadows to remain 'descriptive'".

However through their lens we become astutely aware of humanity's and our own personal effects upon nature.

Utilizing a slightly unusual routing, Terminal Railroad's T101 drops down off the High Line, headed for its usual work at Miller Yard on the St. Louis waterfront. In tow are a couple of CN widecabs for routine maintenance at MEI's Arsenal Street shops.

This move most typically exits the south end of TRRA's Madison Yard on the Eads main, crosses the Mississippi river on the MacArthur bridge, and uses the connector immediately above this train to drop down into Miller yard.

In 1964, Ferruccio Lamborghini moved from building tractors to creating phenomenal exotic sports cars to challenge Ferrari. Lamborghini enlisted Paolo Stanzani and Gian Paolo Dallara to assist in implementing Lamborghini’s first production car, the 350 GT at company factory in Sant’Agata, Italy.

The 350 GT was a front engine, 3.5 V12 hand built grand touring car with a racing motor in the tradition of chief competitors Ferrari and Aston Martin. The 350 GT made its world debut at the 1964 Geneva Auto Show where it was warmly received.

Lamborghini continued with the 350 GT refining and updating the design and construction of the car until 1966 when it was decided that a similar model with upgraded 4.0 liter engine was in order.

Enter the Lamborghini 400 GT.

Utilizing the dramatic styling of the 350 GT, Lamborghini moved forward with the 400 GT, the larger 4.0 liter Bizzarini designed six Weber carbureted engine providing more power with 320BHP. The engine was mated with Lamborghini’s in-house made five speed gearbox providing an easier driving experience.

There were two 400 GT models, the GT (or 400 GT Interim) and the 400 GT 2+2, the standard tourer body style which included some minor cosmetic changes, slightly larger to accommodate the back seats.

If it was Lamborghini’s intention to create a “statement” car straight away, the 400 GT 2+2 Superleggera certainly filled the bill. The 400 GT is reminiscent of its competitors but with Lamborghini’s own styling touches, twin round headlights, (changed and replaced on the car above?) sweeping narrow pontoon fenders, and arching roofline swept back to meet the rear deck lid in an elegant style with excess weight trimmed out to aid performance lending to their magnificent presence.

In all, Lamborghini built 224 400 GT 2+2s from 1966 to 1968.

In the market, 400 GTs have performed well over the last several years with concours quality examples remaining above the half-million dollar mark culminating in a steady and impressive rise in values beginning in the early 2010s and remaining solid performers in the exotic and collectible market.

As long term investments, 400 GTs check all the boxes, hand built, low production numbers and being among the first Lamborghinis produced, exactly what collectors look for.

Does a landscape image tell a story? I have been grappling with this concept lately because I think it can. Or rather, before snapping the shutter, I like to break it down into three steps. First, try to find something that is interesting. Second, think of a story to tell about that item. Third, utilize the elements of composition that best contribute to that narrative. Otherwise, what are you trying to convey?

Or perhaps it is like the Cheshire Cat who says "if you do not know where you are going, any road will get you there". Which is to say, if you continue to work hard, you will eventually succeed. Instead, why not plan the image, in place of "hoping" to find the road that leads to the final destination.

In this image, with the incredible clouds on the horizon, this sage appeared to be hiding in its own brush. Hence, a story or narrative to follow. That told me where to put my tripod, the height needed for the camera, and what lens to use. And finally, the elements needed in the shot.

Rarely seen in the US, Gabriel Voisin's very unique luxury cars reflected his aeronautical background, and stand out from the crowd in many ways beyond his wonderful very Art Deco Eagle mascot. Voisin, a French aviation pioneer and the creator of Europe's first manned, engine-powered, heavier-than-air aircraft capable of a sustained flight. During World War I the company founded by Voisin became a major producer of military aircraft, notably the Voisin III. Subsequently, he switched to the design and production of luxury automobiles under the name Avions Voisin. His early cars were some of the finest luxury vehicles in the world, with unique technical details. Many of them won in competition.

In 1919 he started producing cars using Knight-type sleeve valve engines. A former student of the Fine Arts School of Lyon and an enthusiast for all things mechanical since his childhood, Voisin's uncompromisingly individual designs made extensive use of light alloys, especially aluminum. One of the company's most striking early designs was the Voisin Laboratoire Grand Prix car of 1923; one of the first cars ever to use monocoque chassis construction, and utilizing small radiator-mounted propeller to drive the cooling pump. The characteristic Voisin style of 'rational' coachwork he developed in conjunction with his collaborator André Noel. Noel prioritized lightness, central weight distribution, capacious luggage boxes and distinctively angular lines. The 1930s models with under-slung chassis were strikingly low.

In the early 1930s, Gabriel Voisin could not pay all of his draughtsmen any more and a young creative engineer named André Lefèbvre quit, recommended by Gabriel to Louis Renault. Lefèbvre finally entered Citroën where he led three particularly significant car projects: the Traction Avant, the 2CV and the DS, using a lot of Gabriel's lessons, so his design ideas spread throughout the French Auto industry.

The whole idea behind a single 6000 horsepower engine was to replace two engines with one. Well, looks like someone finally made use of this idea. CSX 672 leads a coal train East on the SP line.

Utilizing good eyesight, American Goldfinches can dive from an overhanging tree branch to the ground to pick up a morsel of food in a split second. But they abstain from eating insects as they are strict vegetarians.

This species of goldfinches molts twice a year, once in the spring when the male sprouts his bright yellow feathers and once at the end of summer when darker feathers come in.

The second molt also provides over a thousand extra feathers for each bird that helps many of them spend the winter in Minnesota although those with more money and sense often spend the winter months in a condo in Florida or Texas.

Like a lot of us old people who have been married for a long time, when mated goldfinches pair up for flight, their calls are almost indistinguishable. Scientists believe these identical calls help other members of the flock distinguish mated pairs.

In the olden days, making silvered-glass mirror was a very complicated process. The final step was the deposition of a thin layer of metallic silver onto glass through the chemical reduction of silver nitrate. This silvering process was adapted for mass manufacturing and led to the greater availability of affordable mirrors. Prior to coating, the glass had to be polished. A typical example for a factory dedicated to polishing is the "Alte Schleif", at Münchshofen (Upper Palatinate), which was used until 1954 and utilized water power for polishing the glass. The room of the polishing mill is covered with rouge (potee), the polishing powder.
