Photographer's metadata: We were driving through the Anza-Borrego Desert near Borrego Springs, California, when we passed this group of mailboxes hunkered down in the shade of a tree. As we passed it, I only caught a brief glimpse of the scene, not a sharp framed mental image. I turned my car around and headed back to see if it was worth taking a photograph. The photograph shows them in their effort to seek refuge from the relentless heat . . . my 'post-camera image management technique' has allowed me to present it as I first saw it at a glimpse. (FA)

This mail truck is part of the airmail exhibit at the Museum of Flight in Seattle, Washington. Airmail demand played a part in new innovations for aircraft. This Ford Model T was built circa 1925. #USMail #mailtruck #Ford #ModelT #Seattle #MuseumOfFlight

The new US Mail Trucks are in. They are expected to improve delivery by almost 1% at a cost of a mere billion dollars..... :-)

White Star Line steamer Owana leaving Detroit in 1907. My colorization of an image in the Library of Congress archive.

The Owana, built in 1899, was first named Pennsyvania. In 1905 it was purchased by the White Star Line and renamed Owana. All White Star steamers, including Owana, were authorized to carry mail and had a US Mail sign in the bow.

This old International panel wagon has a U S Mail insignia above the windshield.

These mailboxes stood out to me as I passed along the dirt road they reside on. No buildings anywhere near this spot...

I've eyeballed this mailbox for some time, and finally got around to shooting it (photographically, of course) a few weeks ago. I wasn't quite satisfied with the results (mostly the perspective), which means I may have to stop and shoot it again.

Me: Yep! This is where you send stuff and pick it up. In fact this is where you came from.

S: Really?

Me: Yep, right here and this is also where alot of your (and the other girls) cool stuff comes from.
