With a forecast for calm winds and clear skies on Sunday night, I ventured out to the Capitol Reflecting Pool to see if a clear reflection in the water was possible. The wind was never perfectly calm, but the reflection still turned out pretty good. It's actually nice that the reflection is mostly clear and still has a little movement in it.

A view of the U.S. Capitol Building from the southeast, and a COLD ONE at that.

Twas a cold and windy night…

Dome shot of the US Capital -

Basically no wind to create an almost glass like reflection on the pond in front of the Capitol Building at dawn

The US National Debt, Signified by the Rotunda of the Capitol Building - Home of the US Congress.

Interesting to see a net on the top part of the left column.

Many people were attracted to this area near the pool and splashing fountains in the large memorial on a hot and stuffy Autumn night. This monument honors those Americans "who took up the struggle during the second world war and made sacrifices to perpetuate the gift our forefathers entrusted to us: A nation conceived in liberty and justice."

Before sunrise Saturday morning at the US Capitol. I took this a couple of minutes before they turned the tree lights off. I tend to take at least one holiday photo of the Capitol each year. Such a great scene to capture.

Last Tuesday night's just-past full Harvest Moon rising over the U.S. Capitol. Bonus detail: the Session Light in the Tholos was lit since congress was still in session. It's a small detail that I've hoped to capture that with a moon for a long time!

Moon details: Since I was standing over three miles from the Capitol, the moon appeared to be over 150 feet in diameter. For comparison purposes, the Capitol is 288 feet tall to the top of the Statue of Freedom.

interesting to read about 'The Apotheosis of Washington'

Washington, US Capitol; Campidoglio

The dome is painted with the huge fresco “The Apotheoses of Washington. The main element of the whole picture is the scene of the ascension of George Washington surrounded by female figures epitomizes Freedom and Achievement, surrounded by images of the scene, embodying the main achievements in the Wars, Science, Engineering, Navigation, Industry and Agriculture.

Yesterday morning's 8% waning crescent moon rising behind the United States Capitol and the Statue of Freedom.

New camera and old tricks - I'm still doing the moon alignment thing. It's pretty cool when you can setup before moonrise using your plot and then the moon rises to the position you envisioned it would.

No, I'm not back in D.C. This is from the archives. Have a great Fourth of July everyone!

Fortunately the rioters have been pushed back, the Capitol is safe and Congress has resumed their responsibility for counting the electoral votes.

Icy morning at the Capitol Reflecting Pool, Washington, DC, January 23, 2022

This is an HDR merge of a few shots taken from the Washington Monument on Easter morning. In spite of the complete dysfunction inside the structure, it's still quite majestic. I'm hoping for a change in leadership in 2018.

This was during preparations of US Capitol a few days before the Inauguration. And yes, that is ice on top of the water in the reflecting pool! Loved being on work assignment there!

A mobile photo of the top portion of a replica of the US Capitol made with wooden matchsticks.

Patrick Acton, "The Matchmaker", used 478,000 matches and 10 gallons of carpenter's glue to construct the 12' wide by 5' tall replica. Due to lights and plexiglass, I could only capture the top portion of it with any success.

This replica and many others are on display at the Matchstick Marvels Museum in Gladbrook, IA.
