U.S. Army Maj. Gen. Van McCarty, adjutant general for South Carolina, speaks to Gold Star Families during the South Carolina Survivor Outreach Services’ (SCSOS) annual Holiday Wishes event Dec. 7, 2024 at the 1917 Club on Fort Jackson Army, in Columbia, South Carolina. For more than 10 years, SCSOS has hosted the event which honors the families of fallen Army and South Carolina Army National Guard Soldiers. During the event, families spend time with other families, and place an ornament in remembrance of their fallen servicemember. My grandmother's sister emigrated first to the US and then to Canada. This is her youngest daughter sitting on the steps of the house they were living in. Next to her is a big doll.
