So after several days of waiting, Nokia have officially announced their new device which they kept secret until the official announcement. So the new device is the latest member of Nseries: the Nokia N97. This new Nokia N97 has a lot to offer. And the Nseries junior member is set to be a multimedia handset and it has a large 3.5-inch touch screen, 32GB built in memory, QWERTY sliding keyboard, WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, 5 megapixel Carl Zeiss camera module and also the 3.5mm headphone plug. With the microSD card slot you can also further expand the Nokia N97 storage space to a max 48GB by adding a 16GB microSD card. The Nokia N97 will be sold at around 550 euros, or 693 USD in first half of 2009 next year.

This is our home theater core; a Marantz AV7005, which is a preamp / processor unit, and nine MA700 monoblock amplifiers configured for 2,000 watts RMS.

The AV7005 is a current (as of the end of 2011) model; the MA700's are a generation back, but still work with the AV7005's remote control system (D-Bus.)

I've set it all up as a 7.1 system with center, fronts, surrounds and backs at 8 ohms and 200 watts RMS each, while the sub is a pair of series-parallel units presenting eight ohms, with a bridged pair of MA700s dedicated to them capable of 600 watts RMS.

I wasn't actually ready to go and do this, but our Denon receiver in the library was "gifted" with some cat vomit through the top cooling vents; I didn't know it had happened, because the back of the receiver was through-wall and in a closet. So the Denon just kept on working until eventually, the acid in the vomit actually ate through some of the Denon's wiring. Nice, eh? Silly cat. So the Denon went downstairs into my shop, where it will likely sit until the weather warms up (our basement is cold! [finally got around to fixing it, March of 2013]), my Sony receiver moved from the theater to the library, and I picked up the Marantz gear to serve in the theater. I can't say I'm depressed over the upgrade, but this wasn't exactly how I thought it would come about. :)

The AV7005 is an 9.1 / 7.1 / 5.1 / stereo preamp-processor. 200 watts RMS into 8 ohms, 300 watts RMS into 4 ohms, or 600 watts RMS, bridged pair, into 8 ohms. Maximum .02% THD at full rated power, or less. Similar amplifier topology to the Marantz 15 amplifier designed by Sid Smith, except the MA700 adds a JFET differential pair cascoded with bipolar devices. D-Bus remote control; THX reference gain setting, THX certified. Unbalanced inputs, binding post outputs. Frequency response is -0.1 dB at 10 Hz, -0.07 dB at 20 KHz, and -0.5 dB at 85 KHz, all measured at one watt. Channel separation is unmeasurable and channel power vampirism is zero (monoblocks FTW), noise is 110 dB down. Absolute noise floor with input shorted is in the 5-75 uV range up to 200 KHz, except between 10 Hz and 40 Hz, where it is in the 420 nV-4uV range. Outputs are triple-parallel bipolar power devices. Power supply is classical linear, so no RFI issues. Protection is smart, with the amp choosing between protection options that include a lower voltage output winding on the power transformer, muting, speaker disconnection, or AC disconnection, depending on the problem type. Sensors monitor DC levels in the signal path, output voltage, and amplifier temperature. D-Bus remote start incorporates a 100 ms delay before passing the signal on, resulting in time-sequenced power up of multiple amplifiers and consequent lower peak source current draw. Standby (red), operate (green), settling (flashing green) LED indicators and hard power switch on front panel.

Configuring two MA700's as a bridged pair is easy: Using the provided switch, set one as master, the other as slave; plug the master's inverted audio output into the slave's normal audio input; jumper the (-) speaker terminals together; wire the speaker (+) to the master (+) and the speaker (-) to the slave (+), plug the preamp output into the master's audio input, and you're done.

In the search for a better musical experience extracting better sound from my recent iFi DAC upgrade and get more pleasure in the sound presentation I discovered SOTM products, I searched for information of network streamers and similar user opinions about them, saw videos and all that I can find about on the web, and after reading lots of average consensus of users in their with their experience, and after some weeks acquired an SOTM sMS-200 Ultra without listening.

I have to admit that acquiring without listening is risky decision, and sometimes you could end with a unit that do not give any positive enhancement to your system. The intent was to remove my noisy Mac Pro from degrading the sound of the DAC, is this case an iFi iDSD Pro that has galvanic isolation but is very sensible to all cables and accessories before it, as any other DAC the quality of the USB connection is primordial to a better sound experience.

You can clean your computer USB, but you will pay the same or more than buy a optimised and clean dedicated computer exclusively for audio.

It’s that quality USB connection I was searching and found it on the SOTM sMS-200 Ultra, it impressive how a single device for giving you a great USB link affects the final sound.

Computers are terribly noisy devices, electricity in an apartment is full of noise, that contaminates the computer, processor, motherboard, fan, hard drive, external devices with bad power supply’s, even software resource needs generate noise, and that noise affects the link that is made from the computer to the DAC.

Any user like me trying to get better audio will start a journey of cleaning that USB transmission with galvanic isolated solutions, USB regenerators and re-clockers, and many other solutions that exist on the market and stores that clean the USB signal. Some of devices at every step give you an extra more, or a different presentation, or change the total presentation, sometimes in a good way, other times not accomplishing what they promote or I expect for the price

What did SOtM do, they produced a small audio optimised network computer to connect to your DAC by USB, it has an optimised and excellent internal clock board, but they build it with high quality audiophile components, for me they have made something very special that results very well on my system.

The SOtM SMS-200 Ultra is a simple audiophile network streamer for the only propose to pass the bits to your DAC in the cleanest way possible.

The sMS-200 Ultra supports various audio standard protocols like the Roon RAAT, HQPlayer, LibreSpot, Minim Server, Airplay, Bubble UPnP, DLNA, Squeezelite, and runs a light linux optimised version for audio called Eunhasu that can be upgraded with more functionality and add support for future DAC hardware.

Their service and support has been very receptive to beginner questions, with fast reply and helpful responses, thats a thumbs up for support. For me, product support is one of the most important features of any product.

The sOTM sMS-200 Ultra is an awesome product it made a big change for the better to my music enjoyment… The final result is based on my personal system, room, cables, and could be different on your system, but one thing I have certain, If anyone tries one of this units the change will be noticed for the better.

When I dedicate some of my time to write about it, it’s because I the product quality and benefit it gave me. Is common that the new upgraded unit is better than the last used solution, and the big motive I upgraded an stayed in the system. But regarding the presence I feel now when I listen to a good album, the SOtM sMS-200 Ultra is one of the best upgrades I have done in the last few years, and the upgrades where a lot.

Apart from some rock concerts, small jazz groups and some classical music concerts, my live music experience is not that active, I will not compare the real presentation that I can achieve, but instead the enjoyment the SOtM offered to me from my system, and with it came a new musical experience. The difference of hearing a real orchestra in plain euforia is something that I never heard any system being capable of, the real thing is a more powerful experience that any system or my small one can reproduce, I herd systems close to that reality with prices impossible to archive by a normal person, but with my hardware limitation, the emulation of the artist presence was upgraded to a new level.

All of this to explain that is difficult to quantify how better in my case the SOtM is compared to reality, but I can quantify listen experience before and after the SOtM, and here it goes.

The SOtM is all about music, after changing the in the box power supply for an SBooster it really shines, the music presentation grows a lot, and the speakers grow the sound to a huge presentation, the sound is so big that the room feels larger, a friend of mine when showing the music, started to look behind searching for surround speakers on the back wall, the SOtM sMS 200 Ultra really made the presentation of some albums impressive. One example of this is the Pink Floyd track On The Run from the Dark Side of the Moon album, or tracks from the album Blood from This Mortal Coil.

The SOtM sMS-200 Ultra is musical and not aggressive in any way, and has this 3D way of presenting the sound a sensation of magical sweetness without loss of information, I am loving it and ordered an SPS-500 Power supply with silver cable, it deserves the best friend to complement and shine even more.

The sound from my Mac Pro was somehow a little bi dimensional when compared to the SOtM, the highs sometimes where to much, and lacked the dimension that the SOtM has, it sounded ok but was not holographic like the sound I have now, and lacked some musicality, some albums where too harsh and very aggressive to be played, this doesn’t mean a bad recording will sound good, the bad will sound always bad, but good recording elevate your experience in a way with the SOtM that the computer did not acomplished.

When used with a good DAC and a quality usb cable, in my case the iFi iDSD Pro DAC and the Audioquest Diamond USB, it gave me impressive results connected to my Focal Solo 6be.

I find the SOtM sMS-200 Ultra very sensitive to power cables, I used Audioquest tornado cables on the iFI and SOtM, and they proved to result very well in my setup.

So I think audiophiles will love it, for me is not an option to revert back to my Mac Pro as a USB source.

If you are using a DAC connected to your computer, you have to try an SOtM streamer and see what you have been loosing in sound with your computer, and pair the SOtM with a good and decent power supply and it will really shine.

After months of (not very much) patience, I finally succeeded in hunting down the rest of the used MA700 amplifiers I wanted to complete our home theater system at a reasonable price.

This is our home theater core; a Marantz AV7005 (upgraded to an AV7703 in 2018), which is a preamp / processor unit, and nine MA700 monoblock amplifiers configured for 2,000 watts RMS.

The AV7005 is (was) a current (as of the end of 2011) model; the MA700's are a generation back, but still worked with the AV7005's remote control system (D-Bus.) But, sigh, not with the MA7703. That's a lot of switches to hit.

I've set it all up as a 7.1 system with center, fronts, surrounds and backs at 8 ohms and 200 watts RMS each, while the sub array is a pair of 18" units, with a bridged pair of MA700s dedicated to them capable of 600 watts RMS.

The AV7005 is an 9.1 / 7.1 / 5.1 / stereo preamp-processor. It offers USB, XPort, six HDMI inputs, two HDMI outputs, four component inputs, two component outputs, five composite inputs, three composite outputs, two coaxial audio inputs, two optical audio inputs, an optical audio output for recording, a 7.1 channel "aux" input, AM, FM, HD/AM and HD/FM, Internet radio, Pandora client, upnp/DLNA media client, Rhapsody client, iPod/iPad client, Sirius satellite radio client, Apple Airplay client, USB media client, balanced and unbalanced outputs, D-Bus remote control, RS-232 remote control for automation, and 12v trigger in and out for things like screen drop/retract automation, dual front panel displays (one may be hidden), and an illuminated learning remote. It pulls about 60 watts maximum, or 0.2 watts on standby, with a linear power supply that eliminates RFI problems associated with switchers. It uses a wired Ethernet connection for its network functions, may be configured for DHCP or static network connections, and can be remote controlled from a web page provided by an on-board web server, or via a telnet connection if you want to handle things programatically. Both full-page and iPod sized web control systems are provided. It can drive two video zones and three audio zones. It features Audyssey room measurement and compensation, along with by-mode and by-input channel level, tone and equalization. It also has a built-in high end headphone amp (very useful on a unit that has no main amplifiers.) DTS: [HD Master&High Res. Audio/ES/96/24/Discrete&Matrix6.1/Neo:6/Express] Dolby: [True HD/Digital Plus&EX/Pro Logic IIz, IIx, II/Virtual Speaker/Headphone] SACD decode. 192 KHz / 24-bit D/A and A/D conversion. Freq. Response 10 Hz-100 KHz +1/-3 dB. FM mono, 78 dB s/n. FM stereo, 68 dB s/n. HD radio (AM or FM) 85 dB s/n. Component video response, 5 Hz-60 MHz, +0/-3 dB. 22 lbs. Marantz provides a 3-year warranty for the unit to the original purchaser. An optional add-on, the RX101, allows the AV7005 to serve as a bluetooth client. System firmware upgrades are done via Ethernet, and take about five minutes on my 30 Mb/sec connection.

200 watts RMS into 8 ohms, 300 watts RMS into 4 ohms, or 600 watts RMS, bridged pair, into 8 ohms. Maximum .02% THD at full rated power, or less. Similar amplifier topology to the Marantz 15 amplifier designed by Sid Smith, except the MA700 adds a JFET differential pair cascoded with bipolar devices. D-Bus remote control; THX reference gain setting, THX certified. Unbalanced inputs, binding post outputs. Frequency response is -0.1 dB at 10 Hz, -0.07 dB at 20 KHz, and -0.5 dB at 85 KHz, all measured at one watt. Channel separation is unmeasurable and channel power vampirism is zero (monoblocks FTW), noise is 110 dB down. Absolute noise floor with input shorted is in the 5-75 uV range up to 200 KHz, except between 10 Hz and 40 Hz, where it is in the 420 nV-4uV range. Outputs are triple-parallel bipolar power devices. Power supply is classical linear, so no RFI issues. Protection is smart, with the amp choosing between protection options that include a lower voltage output winding on the power transformer, muting, speaker disconnection, or AC disconnection, depending on the problem type. Sensors monitor DC levels in the signal path, output voltage, and amplifier temperature. D-Bus remote start incorporates a 100 ms delay before passing the signal on, resulting in time-sequenced power up of multiple amplifiers and consequent lower peak source current draw. Standby (red), operate (green), settling (flashing green) LED indicators and hard power switch on front panel.

Configuring two MA700's as a bridged pair is easy: Using the provided switch, set one as master, the other as slave; plug the master's inverted audio output into the slave's normal audio input; jumper the (-) speaker terminals together; wire the speaker (+) to the master (+) and the speaker (-) to the slave (+), plug the preamp output into the master's audio input, and you're done.

Researchers find millions of vulnerable Net-facing printers, cams, and routers.

Security experts are advising that a networking feature known as Universal Plug and Play be disabled on routers, printers, and cameras, after finding it makes tens of millions of Internet-connected devices vulnerable to serious attack.

UPnP, as the feature is often abbreviated, is designed to make it easy for computers to connect to Internet gear by providing code that helps devices automatically discover each other over a local network. That often eliminates the hassle of figuring out how to configure devices the first time they're connected. But UPnP can also make life easier for attackers half a world away who want to compromise a home computer or breach a business network, according to a white paper published Tuesday by researchers from security firm Rapid7.
