Shhh! Don't tell a soul: I have Nikon binoculars. They're quite good.
You think about odd things when you are in this situation. The universal health cover to which I have access has its virtues. One of them isn't waiting to access services.
The GP I'd seen is an ex-hospital emergency department doctor. He said of the places he'd worked, I should go to this one. He gave me a letter of referral. I don't think that did any harm; they remembered him.
The staff lost me for a while. I don't know how. When I was registered they stuck a QR code on me and then followed a different procedure of scribbles on little Post-It notes; ignoring the technology. Still, they found me again and whisked me through X-ray, before losing me for a while, again.
Radiographers always impress me with their cool, professional competence. Now, having established that nothing bony was compromised by my misadventure I was handed over to an even more impressive ultrasound technician. It didn't hurt that it was the end of her shift and she'd quite like to go home. Almost unique among medical professionals, she listened to, understood and trusted my observations! Consequently when she dropped that little transducer over the spot where I told her to look it was right on target; first time.
These extraordinary devices — which are now so good that they can not only tell you the sex of your unborn child, they also know which school it will attend — immediately found the rather inconveniently snapped off and not inconsequential foreign body lodged between my 3rd and 4th metacarpals. It was clear as day: quantifiable in length, diameter and distance below the surface.
All this established, they were able to tell me that I'd impaled my hand, that a piece of wood was inside me, that the swelling and inflammation was probably a response to infection, I should now go home with this packet of antibiotics and if I felt the need, gobble down some paracetamol. Oh, and please don't wash off those purple marks, because tomorrow, if I was lucky, a surgeon would remove the log from my hand. Of these things I was aware of the cause and consequences of a lump of old wood stuck in my hand. I'd felt it go through my glove, and I was there when I pulled half of it out and paradoxically I had failed to bleed. Their analytical skills, which largely amounted to a capacity to recount, parrot-fashion, what I'd told them were just a part in the little dance I had to go through to get the assistance of the surgeon I knew I needed.
This much I can tell you: the temperature of the injured hand was 3.5⁰C higher than its uninjured partner, that I arrived on time this following morning, as directed, only to find I'd been sent to the wrong place by a rough sign placed on the wall yesterday because of building works — but out of date today — that I should not wait because I'd been queue jumped by others needing that surgeon too, that now 24 hours later I still have an extraneous piece of wood in me with the likelihood that it will be there for another 24 hours, and that this ultrasound machine was made by Canon.
I wonder if Nikon makes ultrasound machines, and are they as good as my binoculars?
