Understanding my roll.

When our first grandchild was born, my son’s family was stationed at NAS Pax River Maryland. We made the drive from Indiana to Maryland as often as possible and they the reverse. August was a beautiful baby boy who looked and acted like every other baby…like a little humanoid who had lots of intake and the smelliest of outgo. When it comes to babies…until they are old enough and can be responsible for their own head and neck, well let’s just say that holding one makes me as nervous as being wrapped up like a mummy utilizing live Boa constrictors! Scratch that as it is an exaggeration…I would prefer the boa’s!

I do not remember his exact age but I would guess it was around a year and a half old and they were in town for a visit. It was a beautiful spring/summer day and August and I were walking around the front yard, just exploring and enjoying time together. As we walked hand in hand, we came upon a bush. I have no idea what type of bush it was, even though it was part of our landscaping. It was both yellow and green, the type that looked a bit sharp but wasn’t.

We stopped and were looking at the bush when August without a word spoken looked up into my eyes. Instantly I knew his question and I said “You can touch it.” He gently reached out and started feeling the texture of a single branch, and smiled. It was at that exact moment, as if hit by lightning, that I felt like a grandfather for the first time…accepting responsibility for one of my roles in his life, to assist with discovery.

Fast forward seven years and I am at Custer SP photographing bison when I notice this little one. Its nose was inches from the ground and a few feet away from a lone blue flower. It moved from side to side, eyed fixed on the flower as if it was wondering what it was…a bit curious, a bit hesitant. A few seconds passed before it worked up the courage to approach the flower. When it bowed down to ascertain its fragrance, I took this photo.

Watching this bison reminded me of the thrill, the absolute blessing of discovery…making this shot a personal favorite from this trip!

‘Increased understanding of the influence of habitat and intrinsic factors on survival of a species is a prerequisite to successful management programs, particularly as they relate to population dynamics and the role of population models in adaptive species management.”

While walking the beach of west Texas watching the wildlife struggle daily for survival, seeing the pollution of man created by its struggle to survive I could not but correlate and remember a Biologist prof back in college with the quote above and wonder when will politicians and environmentalist direct their attention to what Biologist teach on a daily basis.

A close-up of a mystical lacquered tiger's eye, hyper-detailed and reflective, showing intricate mother-of-pearl inlay patterns swirling within the iris geometric floral motifs, traditional Korean cloud curves, and shimmering crescent moons. The tiger’s eye glows softly with iridescent highlights pale blue, violet, and gold capturing both wisdom and ancient memory. The surrounding fur is made of nacre scales, finely patterned and glowing faintly in ambient moonlight. Photorealistic rendering, shallow depth of field, surreal but poetic tone

Anselm classically defined theology as fides quaerens intellectum—“ faith seeking understanding.” Not faith that already understands and so no longer needs to seek. That would by definition no longer be theology. Theology is not itself the faith but its quest. If we stop seeking, we are no longer on the way. Faith seeking understanding has then turned into “belief that understands.” It then closes down the very root of quaerens, from which come both question and quest. Speaking the divine wisdom in a mystery, theology remains a work of human speech. Theology is not the same as faith or belief, but a disciplined and relational reflection upon them. God calls, but we are responsible for what we call “God.” And God may be calling us to that very responsibility!

[j]ust as the myths still live on in ghostly life as fables after they have died as real meaning, so the old rhythmic consciousness of Nature (it should rather be called participation than a consciousness) lives on as the tradition of metrical form. We can only understand the origin of metre by going back to the ages when men were conscious, not merely in their heads, but in the beating of their hearts and the pulsing of their blood—when thinking was not merely of Nature, but was Nature herself.

I took my myself down to the mouth of Loch Lomond for the last days of summer, lots of people enjoying the Loch late in the evening. You can see the side of Ben Lomond. Have a great weekend.

El Capitan is a vertical rock formation in Yosemite National Park, on the north side of Yosemite Valley, near its western end. The granite monolith is about 3,000 feet from base to summit along its tallest face and is a world-famous location for big wall climbing, including the disciplines of aid climbing, free climbing, and more recently for free solo climbing.

The formation was named "El Capitan" by the Mariposa Battalion when they explored the valley in 1851. El Capitán was taken to be a loose Spanish translation of the local Native American name for the cliff, “Tutokanula” or "Rock Chief".

The "Rock Chief" etymology is based on the written account of Mariposa Battalion doctor Lafayette Bunnell in his 1892 book. Bunnell reports that Ahwahneechee Chief Tenaya explained to him, forty-one years earlier, in 1851, that the massive formation, called Tutokanula, could be translated as "Rock Chief" because the face of the cliff looks like a giant rock Chief. In Bunnell's account, however, he notes that this translation may be wrong, stating: “I am not etymologist enough to understand just how the word has been constructed… I am found in error, I shall be most willing to acknowledge it, for few things appear more uncertain, or more difficult to obtain, than a complete understanding of the soul of an Indian language.”

An alternative etymology is that "Tutokanula" is Miwok for “Inchworm Rock”. Julia F. Parker, the preeminent Coast Miwok-Kashaya Pomo basket-weaver and Yosemite Museum cultural ambassador since 1960, explains that the name Tutokanula, or “Inchworm Rock”, originates in the Miwok creation story for the giant rock, a legend in which two bear cubs are improbably rescued by a humble inchworm. In the story, a mother bear and her two cubs are walking along the river. The mother forages for seeds and berries while the two cubs nap in the sun on a flat rock. While the cubs sleep, the rock grows and grows, above the trees and into the sky. The mother bear is unable to climb the rock to get to her cubs and she becomes afraid and asks for help. The fox, the mouse, the mountain lion, and every other animal tries to climb to the top of the giant rock but they each fail. Finally, the lowly little inchworm tries the climb and successfully makes it all the way to the top and rescues the cubs. All the animals are happy to see that the little inchworm has saved the two bear cubs and the rock is named in the inchworm's honor.

The “Inchworm Rock” version of the meaning of Tutokanula is also described in the story "Two Bear Cubs: A Miwok Legend from California's Yosemite Valley" by Robert D. San Souci and in the First People Miwok recounting of the El Cap legend.

The top of El Capitan can be reached by hiking out of Yosemite Valley on the trail next to Yosemite Falls, then proceeding west. For climbers, the challenge is to climb up the sheer granite face. There are many named climbing routes, all of them arduous, including Iron Hawk and Sea of Dreams.

"One Night" is a short screenplay set in a 1920s speakeasy in New Amsterdam, New York. It follows the interaction between Lily, a struggling burlesque dancer, and Detective Jackson. Lily's performance catches the detective's attention, leading him to strike up a conversation with her backstage. Despite their initial guardedness, they share a moment of connection, hinting at the possibility of a deeper relationship in the future. The screenplay explores themes of loneliness, connection, and the search for understanding in the midst of a bustling, yet isolated, nightlife scene.

Fade In:

INT. SPEAKEASY - NIGHT

LILY, a troubled burlesque dancer, performs on stage amidst the smoky, dimly lit atmosphere. DETECTIVE JACKSON, rugged and observant, watches from the bar.

DETECTIVE JACKSON

(to the BARTENDER)

Who's the dame up there?

BARTENDER

Lily. A real beauty, but troubled.

DETECTIVE JACKSON

Mind if I have a word with her?

BARTENDER

Tread lightly.

Detective Jackson approaches Lily backstage as she removes her makeup.

DETECTIVE JACKSON

Mind if I join you?

LILY

(surprised)

Sure.

DETECTIVE JACKSON

You're quite the performer.

LILY

Thanks. It's the only thing I'm good at.

DETECTIVE JACKSON

I don't believe that for a second.

LILY

(curious)

And what makes you say that?

DETECTIVE JACKSON

Call it a hunch. There's a story behind those eyes.

LILY

Maybe there is. But it's not one I share with just anyone.

DETECTIVE JACKSON

Fair enough. If you ever feel like talking, you know where to find me.

LILY

Thanks, detective. Maybe I'll take you up on that offer someday.

They share a moment before Detective Jackson leaves.

DETECTIVE JACKSON

Until then, Lily. Take care of yourself.

Lily watches him go, feeling a newfound connection.

Alligator River NWR in North Carolina is one of the toughest sites I have ever tried to photograph. It was just too hot and humid to walk the trails so the car blind was the platform of choice. With large water filled ditches on both sides of every road, target scanning for alligators, bears and owls kept my neck in knots for most of our visit.

While scanning the tree line early one morning with humidity hanging in the air so heavy you could taste it, I noticed this fellow in the road as I rounded the curve. Not wanting to take time to change lenses, I jumped out of the car and approached my subject fully extended while warming itself in the gravel of the road. From 30 feet away, it responded to let me know that he was well aware of my approach. At 15 feet away it quickly maneuvered itself into a loosely based coil and started shaking its tail as if it was a rattlesnake. Understanding that he was so seriously concerned with my presence, I stayed back a good 10-12 feet with and exit strategy well formulated.

As I lifted my lens…well it didn’t like that either as it immediately opened its mouth and tightened its coil just a bit. It was at this point I realized two things. A…it wasn’t backing down and was ready to fight and B…I really wanted it to open its mouth a little bit more to improve the shot. It was time to preform a potentially stupid maneuver that there is certainty a good chance that I may later regret. I took my right foot and scuffed at the gravel below, making a somewhat loud sound, as it was perfectly quiet before. It REALLY didn’t like that maneuver, escalating its tail shaking and giving me the mouth shot that I so desired as it made a mock striking motion twice. It was at this point I surmised that I was just about out of warnings.

I verbally thanked God of the opportunity and the snake for its time. As I started walking backwards towards my car it took the opportunity to retreat into its preferred environment, the weeds and into the roadside ditch. I happily returned to my preferred environment, now filled with horse flies as I stupidly left the door open when jumping out to photograph the Water Moccasin (Cottonmouth).

In the end there doesn't have to be

anyone who understands you.......

There just has to be someone who

wants to.

Love, her colourful dress,..

Elle sait,..Elle comprends,...

Recently I have been really into learning about different camera systems and understanding their trade-offs. Mostly my focus was on M43 system (micro four thirds) because that's the only ILC (interchangeable lens camera) system that I have not tried yet.

M43 system has the smallest sensor size among all ILCs in the market, and it is only a quarter of the size compared to a full frame sensor. The result of that is m43 cameras tend to have lower dynamic range and worse high ISO performance. But on the flip side, these cameras (especially with their lens) are more lightweight and affordable, and the stabilization on m43 is absolutely class leading. I've seen people doing 5+ seconds hand-held long exposure WITHOUT a tripod, which blew my mind.

Last week I happened to find a really good deal on a used Olympus EM1 with 12-40 pro lens. This camera was first launched in 2013 and the 12-40 pro lens was Olympus's first pro-grade lens with very high standard of image quality. I couldn't pass on such a good deal and eventually decided to purchase this combo and test it myself to see what m43 system is really about.

This image was taken during my first outing with this combo and I would say I am really impressed, especially by this lens. It is definitely sharper than any standard zoom lens I have used in my Fuji system, and despite the camera being almost a decade old, it still produces very decent raw files that I can work in post to bring out what I want.

I am looking forward to playing with m43 system more in the future and getting more images to share with you!
