"The Syndics," also known as "The Sampling Officials," is a renowned painting created by the Dutch master Rembrandt van Rijn in 1662. It is an exceptional example of group portraiture from the Dutch Golden Age, depicting five men gathered around a table, engaged in their duties as syndics (officers) of the Amsterdam Drapers' Guild.
The painting is notable for its meticulous attention to detail and Rembrandt's skillful use of light and shadow. The figures are positioned in a semi-circle around the table, with their faces illuminated by a strong light source from the left. This dramatic lighting technique creates a sense of depth and dimensionality, drawing the viewer's attention to the individual expressions and gestures of the syndics.
Each syndic is portrayed with distinctive characteristics, capturing their roles and personalities within the guild. Rembrandt expertly renders their varied facial features, clothing, and accessories, demonstrating his mastery in capturing human likeness and conveying individuality. The syndics are shown examining fabric samples, which symbolize their responsibility for regulating quality and standards within the textile industry.
"The Syndics" is regarded as one of Rembrandt's most celebrated works and is highly regarded for its technical brilliance and psychological depth. The painting exemplifies his ability to infuse ordinary subjects with dignity and introspection, elevating them beyond mere representation. It also reflects the artist's deep understanding of human nature, emphasizing the individuality and humanity of each syndic.
Today, "The Syndics" is housed in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, where it continues to captivate visitors with its remarkable craftsmanship and profound insight into the human condition. It stands as a testament to Rembrandt's enduring legacy as one of the greatest painters in Western art history.
Understanding is the reflection of creating.

Baby African Bush Elephants, scientifically known as Loxodonta africana, are incredibly adorable and endearing creatures. They are born weighing around 200-250 pounds (90-115 kilograms) and stand about 2.5 to 3 feet (76-91 centimeters) tall at the shoulders.
These young elephants are highly social animals and rely on close bonds with their family members for protection and learning. They are under the constant care and guidance of their mothers and other experienced female elephants within the herd. Baby elephants stay close to their mothers, learning essential survival skills, such as finding water, identifying edible plants, and understanding social behaviors within the herd.
Play is an essential aspect of their early development. They engage in playful activities, such as mock charging, splashing in water, and chasing birds or other small animals. Through play, they hone their motor skills and social interactions, preparing them for adulthood.
Baby African Bush Elephants are heartwarming creatures to observe in the wild, and their presence contributes to the rich tapestry of life in the African savannah.

Continuing the theme of "quirky Indiana", today's feature is this old Impala sitting on the top of a metal tower.
One may ask "why", and I don't have an answer. But this is (or was) part of a menagerie of unusual stuff that included a vintage motel sign, old railroad cars and junk trucks. All located at a train station that was converted into a seafood restaurant. The business has since closed and to my understanding most of this stuff have been removed from the property. I'm not sure if this car is still there or not!

UPDATE: Unfortunately this car (and everything else) has been removed from the property as of 10/2021.

"Las personas más bellas con las que me he encontrado son aquellas que han conocido la derrota, conocido el sufrimiento, conocido la lucha, conocido la perdida, y han encontrado su forma de salir de las profundidades. Estas personas tienen una apreciación, una sensibilidad y una comprensión de la vida que los llena de compasión, humildad y una profunda inquietud amorosa. La gente bella no surge de la nada"

When we understand the importance of living together without judgement we will have arrived at a significantly better place than we are today. It is easy to be judgmental, but what purpose does it have? If we live together in peace and allow one another to live the way we wish as long as it does not physically harm anyone, that is what we should be aiming for. Compassion, love, tolerance, understanding, acceptance, respect, equality, diversity and decency will take you a long way. Steer your children away from hate, greed, selfishness and power, this type of behavior only causes pain and sadness to so many, so let's embrace our differences. This should happen globally with all nationalities being involved. So let's get started now!
With heartfelt and genuine thanks for your kind visit. Have a wonderful and beautiful day, be well, keep your eyes open, appreciate the beauty surrounding you, enjoy creating, stay safe and laugh often! ❤️❤️❤️
We had been to Chaco Cultural Park, and loved it. The park is magical because you can explore inside the actual structures. This really makes you feel history. Well, when it was time to schedule a visit to nearby Aztec Ruins National Monument, we figured it was going to be more of the same. Now, that was just fine with us, because we loved Chaco.
However, the National Park team was very thoughtful. They did not want similar experiences in two parks that were so close to each other. So how to you address this issue? They had Chaco is a state of arrested decay, meaning they work hard to leave it like they found it. No more decay, but no less either. Its a fine balance. So at Aztec, they re-created a full community sized Kiva. This contrasted with Chaco because it was finished, like it would have been long ago. This provided a very different experience and thought us new things about the Puebloan culture (not Aztec, BTW, that was a misnomer made long ago that stuck).
So what does that mean to this image? I had shot a classic image at Chaco that showed the procession of doorways spanning several rooms. I loved it. But I did not want to shoot the same thing here. Well, here they recreated the wood ceilings throughout a procession of rooms. So to emphasize the uniqueness of Aztec (the fact that its complete) I tried to capture the wood ceiling. What I came up with reminded me that I often do much better work when I have some kind of constraint. The fact that I challenged myself to include the ceiling ended up creating an image that truly am proud of. It ended up with a real adventure feeling (blame Indy I guess).
Enjoy. Let me know what you think.

Christmas is the day when Jesus Christ came into the world with love. This is a day of forgiveness, of light feelings, a day when love triumphs. Therefore, on this magical day, I would like to wish everyone love, health, happiness and peace of mind. When Christmas shines with stars, may your most cherished and kind wishes come true. May this holiday bring to your homes an understanding of the meaning of life and what is happening in it, as much warmth and happiness as possible! May the past remain only with the best and brightest memories, the present will remain joyful and successful, and the future will not bring disappointments! Merry Christmas, my friends!!

The Bewick's wren (Thryomanes bewickii) is a wren native to North America. It is the only species placed in the genus Thryomanes. At about 14 cm (5.5 in) long, it is grey-brown above, white below, with a long white eyebrow. While similar in appearance to the Carolina wren, it has a long tail that is tipped in white. The song is loud and melodious, much like the song of other wrens. It lives in my back yard, thickets, brush piles and hedgerows, open woodlands and scrubby areas, often near streams. It eats insects and spiders, which it gleans from vegetation or finds on the ground, and slugs from under or near the birdbath. It's a favorite, and the first wren I ever heard singing.
If you look at a range map, I'm very fortunate to have this in this part of northern California. Amazing what nature photography can do for knowledge (sometimes understanding) of the flora and fauna around us.
Europe, Spain, Valencia, Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias, Museo de las Ciencias Príncipe Felipe, Saurus skeleton
Let’s return to delightful Valencia and the Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias.
As you probably know, the architecture of Santiago Calatrava is based on biomorphic shapes, skeletal structures are his thing. Whereas the Estação de Oriente is based on a whale, the ‘Turning torso’ in Malmö (Sweden) on a man, the morphology of the Museo de las Ciencias Príncipe Felipe seems to be based on creatures of the Jurassic era.
The Museo is a wonderful science, biology and environment museum. Full interactivity is one of its features, the motto of which is “Forbidden not to touch, not to feel, not to think”.
And indeed, visiting is an engaging delight. It’s located in "The City of Arts and Sciences (Valencian: Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciències. Spanish: Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias, a cultural and architectural quarter which formed one of the reason why we at last visited Valencia (the other reason was the spectacular ‘Fallas’). It's near the old riverbed of the river Turia, which was drained and rerouted after a catastrophic flood in 1957, and turned into a lovely park. The Ciutat’ is also designed by Santiago Calatrava (and Félix Candela) and opened in April, 1998.
True to the legacy of the star architect/engineer, it costed nearly three times the initially expected cost of €300 million and almost bankrupted the region.
Inside the Museo is the skeleton of a family member of the dinosaur and the relation between it keleton and Calatrava’s architecture is probably immediately obvious.
This is number 278 of Museum.
The “Gate of Understanding” is located at the entrance of the Inner Harbour, it is a 40 metre tall maonument to honour the Luso-Chinese realations. The monument was completed in 1993. Data from Mr. Rickzaf. Thanks

Of all the gifts we can give to people, the gift of our touch is one of the most priceless. Through our hands we convey a kind of radiance. A warmth seeps out from our inner fire, a wrap for someone's chill, a light for another's dark.

"Once we have tasted far streams, touched the gold, found some limit beyond the waterfall, a season changes, and we come back changed but safe, quiet, grateful." Stafford
Understanding my roll.
When our first grandchild was born, my son’s family was stationed at NAS Pax River Maryland. We made the drive from Indiana to Maryland as often as possible and they the reverse. August was a beautiful baby boy who looked and acted like every other baby…like a little humanoid who had lots of intake and the smelliest of outgo. When it comes to babies…until they are old enough and can be responsible for their own head and neck, well let’s just say that holding one makes me as nervous as being wrapped up like a mummy utilizing live Boa constrictors! Scratch that as it is an exaggeration…I would prefer the boa’s!
I do not remember his exact age but I would guess it was around a year and a half old and they were in town for a visit. It was a beautiful spring/summer day and August and I were walking around the front yard, just exploring and enjoying time together. As we walked hand in hand, we came upon a bush. I have no idea what type of bush it was, even though it was part of our landscaping. It was both yellow and green, the type that looked a bit sharp but wasn’t.
We stopped and were looking at the bush when August without a word spoken looked up into my eyes. Instantly I knew his question and I said “You can touch it.” He gently reached out and started feeling the texture of a single branch, and smiled. It was at that exact moment, as if hit by lightning, that I felt like a grandfather for the first time…accepting responsibility for one of my roles in his life, to assist with discovery.
Fast forward seven years and I am at Custer SP photographing bison when I notice this little one. Its nose was inches from the ground and a few feet away from a lone blue flower. It moved from side to side, eyed fixed on the flower as if it was wondering what it was…a bit curious, a bit hesitant. A few seconds passed before it worked up the courage to approach the flower. When it bowed down to ascertain its fragrance, I took this photo.
Watching this bison reminded me of the thrill, the absolute blessing of discovery…making this shot a personal favorite from this trip!

Beauty, compassion, understanding and love are my weapons of choice in this World Anti-war I. I feel that they are very powerful. And on the both sides of this war (of course you know that there, in Russia, at the other side of the war, a lot of people are fighting against war, as they could) my heart is with peaceful people. Even at the battlefields Ukrainians are fighting to banish and to take down the war.
They hate the war. They are fighting for peace. And so am I.

As I walk through this wicked world
Searchin′ for light in the darkness of insanity
I ask myself, is all hope lost?
Is there only pain and hatred and misery?
And each time I feel like this inside
There's one thing I wanna know
What′s so funny 'bout peace, love and understanding? Oh
What's so funny ′bout peace love and understanding?
And as I walked on
Through troubled times
My spirit gets so downhearted sometimes
So where are the strong
And who are the trusted?
And where is the harmony?
Sweet harmony
′Cause each time I feel it slippin' away, just makes me wanna cry
What′s so funny 'bout peace, love and understanding? Oh
What′s so funny 'bout peace, love and understanding?
So where are the strong?
And who are the trusted?
And where is the harmony?
Sweet harmony
′Cause each time I feel it slippin' away, just makes me wanna cry
What's so funny ′bout peace, love and understanding? Oh
