The Original Tour Bus DLP244 Reg No Y544 UGC outside Mardens shortly after arrival

Despite being less famous than their elliptical and spiral galactic cousins, irregular dwarf galaxies, such as the one captured in this NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope image, are actually one of the most common types of galaxy in the Universe. Known as UGC 4459, this dwarf galaxy is located approximately 11 million light-years away in the constellation of Ursa Major (The Great Bear), a constellation that is also home to the Pinwheel Galaxy (M101), the Owl Nebula (M97), Messier 81, Messier 82 and several other galaxies all part of the M81 group.

UGC 4459’s diffused and disorganised appearance is characteristic of an irregular dwarf galaxy. Lacking a distinctive structure or shape, irregular dwarf galaxies are often chaotic in appearance, with neither a nuclear bulge — a huge, tightly packed central group of stars — nor any trace of spiral arms — regions of stars extending from the centre of the galaxy. Astronomers suspect that some irregular dwarf galaxies were once spiral or elliptical galaxies, but were later deformed by the gravitational pull of nearby objects.

Rich with young blue stars and older red stars, UGC 4459 has a stellar population of several billion. Though seemingly impressive, this is small when compared to the 200 to 400 billion stars in the Milky Way!

Observations with Hubble have shown that because of their low masses, star formation is very low compared to larger galaxies. Only very little of their original gas has been turned into stars. Thus, these small galaxies are interesting to study to better understand primordial environments and the star formation process.

Looking immaculate on its first day in service, ARRIVA Kent Thameside 6235 Y468 UGC is seen on St John's Lane, Hartley whilst working route 433. Monday 2nd September 2013.

Three of these vehicles arrived at Northfleet in December 2012 to replace the same number of Volvo Olympian's, it was anticipated that these would replace like for like as quick as possible however following the entry to service of 6234 in May the other two have remained in store at their home depot. With ARRIVA seeking to have a low floor fleet prior to the new school year 6235 was prepped for service at the end of August and 6233 is to follow soon after.

TheHubble Space Telescope imaged this lonely spiral galaxy called UGC 9391. The galaxy resides 130 million light-years from Earth in the constellation Draco near the north celestial pole. Its star-studded spiral arms stand in splendid isolation against a backdrop of distant galaxies, which are only visible as indistinct swirls or smudges thanks to their vast distances from Earth. The image also features some much brighter foreground stars closer to home. These bright nearby stars are ringed with diffraction spikes – prominent spikes caused by light interacting with the inner workings of Hubble’s secondary mirror supports.

UGC 3697 (GB 1, the Integral Sign Galaxy and others) is an edge-on spiral with warped arms located approximately 151 million light-years away in Camelopardalis. Scientists believe the warping is the result of interaction with a dwarf galaxy.

UGC 3714 is the round spiral below and to the left (east) of UGC 3697. It is located approximately 140 million light-years away.

I get the eyelashes if it's meant to be Greta the Gas Bus, although I really don't get why somebody thought green was a good colour to pick. Photoshop job one day maybe? "Greta the Gas Bus but it doesn't look awful?!"

A dwarf galaxy dataset I put together after being woken up by my cat, Tofu. I was unable to get back to sleep, so I decided to make myself useful.

This was put together using some custom drizzled data made by Meredith Durbin, attribution as follows:

Regarding the processing: The near-infrared data doesn't cover the entire image. It is smaller and diagonally positioned in a way that leaves three of the corners uncovered.

That data came from these proposals:

An unassuming galaxy with an active nucleus hosting a black hole of a relatively low mass. With these observations, astronomers sought to characterize the galaxy's distance, morphology, the orbits of stars along the disk, and its globular cluster population. Each of these properties can be used together to help measure the mass of the black hole. It turns out that it is not very easy to measure such a thing, so it is best to try measuring it many different ways to see how closely they all match up.

This Picture of the Week shows a dwarf galaxy named UGC 685. Such galaxies are small and contain just a tiny fraction of the number of stars in a galaxy like the Milky Way. Dwarf galaxies often show a hazy structure, an ill-defined shape, and an appearance somewhat akin to a swarm or cloud of stars — and UGC 685 is no exception to this. Classified as an SAm galaxy — a type of unbarred spiral galaxy — it is located about 15 million light-years from Earth.
