Large workshops in Gaul (now much of western Europe) mass-produced distinctive red pottery known as Samian Ware. Much was exported to Britain as tableware. Different workshop owners stamped their names on their own products to identify and advertise themselves. Samian ware could be plain or decorated with raised motifs. The most complex decoration was wheel cut.
