Eastern Box Turtles seem to like it when the visitor count is lower than normal at Cedars of Lebanon State Park. Fourth of July weekend (2011), we spotted 6 or 7 on or near the park's roadways.

I saw an article in the paper today about how the NJ Fish & WIldflife dept was looking for any sitings of the eastern box turtle in NJ. It is very rare and very endangered. I remember finding this turtle while hiking up in the Ramapo area and I tyhought... could this be one? Sure as hell looks like it to me. I*ve reported the siting but it was literally 3 yrs ago. Still worth investigating I figure.

This girl was one of three that was crossing the road. She was the only survivor by the time John saw her, stopped, and brought her to the safety of the ponds at home. She either already had laid, or was ready to lay, her eggs. She moved very, very fast. John put her in Pond 3.
