An old adult found crossing a rural road in the afternoon after a morning of rain showers. Eastern Box Turtles are listed as a Species of Special Concern in New Jersey.
The red "ear" on the slider isn't an ear at all, but it is a colored area on each side of the head. (To my eye it isn't red either, but sort of orange.)

A giant turtle peacefully sleeping at "A Cupulatta", a turtles protection centre located in Corsica, about 30 Km from Ajaccio
June evening at Lake Maria State Park, MN. See a painted turtle in the grass and get out to get a few photos and expect it to run off like most painted turtles do, but it didn't. It was digging in the ground a hole and thought it was strange and then the first egg popped into the hole and watched her drop 8 eggs into the hole and then covered the hole and walked back to the lake.
Loggerhead Turtle skull - unfortunately poaching of turtles when they lay is rife with 1,100 killed on Boa Vista for bush meat and skins. Remains were very easy to find sadly.
Some redbelly turtles warm themselves in the springtime sun. Like many areas, southern Maryland experienced a drop in temperatures over Tuesday night. But, that wasn't enough to deter these sun worshipers!
This turtle was roaming around our back yard for a few days, probably building a nest somewhere. Strange, because our yard is completely fenced in by 6 foot fences, so she must have rappelled in somehow.
